Minna, Feb. 16,2017 ( NAN) Students of the Federal University of Technology, Minna, on Wednesday staged a demonstration over alleged death of a 300-level Chemistry student at a football match.
The News Agency of Nigeria ( NAN) reported that the late student was rushed to the university’s clinic where he was pronounced dead on a arrival .
Not happy with the pronouncement, the students embarked on demonstration from the clinic.
According to them, the deceased was not treated on arrival, only to be informed of his death.
A lecturer, who prefered anonymity, told NAN: “Yes a 300 level student slumped while playing football or about to play football at the field but was rushed to the clinic and was confirmed dead on arrival. ”
” He died before coming to the university clinic; it’s not that he was not attended to, he died before arrival. ”
”That is all I can tell you but please don’t mention my name because I am not the university’s spokesman .
” The students have no reason to embark on senseless demonstration; we all come from God and to Hm we shall all return,” he said.
He said that in about three weeks time, students would start examinations.
The university’s Public Relations Officer, Mrs Lydia Legbo, confirmed the incident.
” Yes one of our students slumped at the football field and was rushed to our clinic but was confirmed dead on arrival, ”
” I called the University Chief Security Officer several times and the medical doctor, none of them picked my calls; they must be up and doing, trying to put things in order,” she said.
When contacted, DSP Bala Elkalla, Niger Police Command spokesman, told NAN that normalcy had since returned to the university.
Elkalla said three students were arrested over the incident for allegedly burning the clinic and vandalising a vehicle belonging to the Dean, Students Affairs.
He said that the police and the university security personnel had brought the situation under control .
