FCT education secretariat fights illiteracy, ignorance through adult, mass literacy – Secretary

Abuja, Feb. 14, 2017 (NAN) The FCT Education Secretariat says it is equipping residents of FCT by providing them with skills necessary for meaningful living and to reduce illiteracy and ignorance to the barest minimum.

Alhaji Musa Maikasuwa, the secretary of the organisation said this when he spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria on Tuesday in Abuja on Tuesday.

He said that the Department of Mass Education (DME) had in 2016 enrolled 13, 477 learners across the six zones.

‘’DME has the mandate to provide adult literacy and vocational training for the FCT residents.

‘’It was established primarily for the attainment of mass literacy and self-sufficiency objectives,’’ he said.

He said the department made it possible for 4, 648 FCT residents to attain basic literacy status and engaged 500 qualified part-time facilitators to man 441 learning centres.

Maikasuwa further said the department trained 300 facilitators for the United Nations Education and Scientific Corporation (UNESCO)/ Proctors’ and Gambles (P&G) project.

“We are also able to secure the donation of 150 laptops, 500 primers, exercise books and pencils for facilitators and learners from UNESCO/P&G project.

“We also attracted National Commission for Mass Literacy, Adult and Non-formal Education (NMEC) and Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) collaboration for the establishment of multipurpose model learning centre at Karshi.

“The DME’s also attracted UNESCO/P&G which empowered 7, 500 girls and women on the use of ICT in the literacy delivery as a pilot scheme in Nigeria.

The secretary said the construction of the DME headquarters at Karu had been completed and approval granted for the immediate relocation of the DME offices from Asokoro.

Maikasuwa said the department had also conducted a 3-day community level sensitisation by Qur’anic schools proprietors on acceptance of integration of core curriculum into the Qur’anic school system in the FCT.

The secretary said 39 proprietors participated in the exercise.

He said the department had trained and graduated 323 learners in electrical installation, fashion design, ICT/web site design, and hospitality and tourism in collaboration with Industrial Training Fund (ITF).

“218 Learners graduated in Vocational Proficiency Examination (VPE) equivalent to Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

He DME also expanded literacy services to six nomadic communities with an enrolment of 255 learners.
‘’There was also the integration of formal education curriculum into Qur’anic schools (IQE) with 25 centres and enrolment of 800 learners across the FCT.’’

Maikasuwa said the DME had succeeded in getting accreditation/approval from the West African Examination Council (WAEC) for the conduct of its examinations in all the six zonal centres and also registered 13 private centres.(NAN)
