Lagos, Feb. 13, 2017(NAN) A 22-year-old banker, Afolabi Sanusi, was on Monday arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly diverting money into his lover’s account.

Sanusi, a resident of Ijora-Badia area of Lagos State, is facing charges of breach of the peace, diversion of fund and stealing.

The prosecutor, Insp. Rita Momoh, said that the accused committed the offences on Jan.18, at Ojuwoye, Mushin, Lagos.

She said that the accused stole N967,000, property of Diamond Bank, Mushin, Lagos.

“The accused, a staff of the bank, fraudulently converted N967,000 to his own,” Momoh said.

She said that the accused conducted himself in a manner likely to cause breach of the peace by issuing forged stamped tellers to customers.

“The accused presented false stamped deposit slips to customers after receiving money from them and pretended that the slips were genuinely issued,” the prosecutor said.

She said the bank discovered that N967,000 was missing from the money the accused was supposed to remit to the bank.

“During investigation, it was discovered that the accused had been transferring and crediting the account of a customer who was later discovered to be his girlfriend.

“The lady was called and she confirmed that the accused used to credit her account,” Momoh said.

The offences contravened sections 166, 278 and 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that section 285 of the law prescribes three years imprisonment as penalty for stealing.

Section 166 prescribes sentences ranging from N15,000 fine for a first offender to N45,000  fine or three months imprisonment (or both) in subsequent cases, for breach of the peace.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty of the offences and was granted bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum.

The Magistrate, Mr MKO Fadeyi, adjourned the case till March 8 for mention. (NAN)
