Athens, Feb. 10, 2017 (dpa/NAN) The Greek port city of Thessaloniki is preparing for what is described as the nation’s biggest evacuation in the country’s history in order to defuse a 250-kg bomb from World War II.
About 70,000 residents of the western half of Thessaloniki have been asked to leave their homes and hospitals have been put on alert ahead of the bomb squad’s work on Sunday afternoon.
The unexploded bomb was discovered during construction work near a petrol station in Greece’s second-largest city.
“Beginning from Sunday at 10 a.m., more than 100 buses will help to evacuate residents living within a 1,900-meter radius of the bomb.
“It is the biggest evacuation in the country’s history,” a spokesman for Thessaloniki’s western Ampelokipoi district said.
