Court remands 2 students for illegal possession of firearms, cultism

Makurdi, Feb. 10, 2017 (NAN) Two students, Isah Ibahim and Yusuf Umar, were on Friday remanded in prison custody by a Makurdi Magistrates’ Court over alleged conspiracy, illegal possession of firearms and cultism.

The Prosecutor, Cpl. Adama Owochio, said the accused, residents of No. 82, Benue Crescent, Makurdi and No. 5 Anyangba Street, Wadata, respectively, were arrested on Jan. 7, following a distress call.

According to the prosecutor, the accused were arrested by men of the state Special Anti-robbery Squad, (SARS) while on routine patrol.

Owochio said that the SARS team responded to a distress call that a Red Skin member of the Black Axe cult group was shot by some cult members.

He said that the accused were apprehended with one locally made pistol and one live cartridge in a yellow commercial tricycle with Lagos registration number FKJ 148 QF.

During interrogation, the accused confessed to the crime, saying that they were on revenge mission over the killing of their cult member, the prosecutor said.

He said that the offences contravene Sections 6 (b) and 3 (1) of the Robbery and Firearms (Special Provision) Act 2004 and Section 9 of the Penal Code Law of Benue state, 2004.

The Magistrate, Mrs Franca Yuwa, adjourned the case to March 22, for further mention. (NAN)
