Mararaba (Nasarawa State), Feb. 9, 2016 (NAN) An Upper Area Court in Mararaba, Nasarawa State, on Thursday, remanded two technicians, Henry Kalu and Victor Aneke, charged with criminal conspiracy, mischief and theft.

The defendants, who allegedly conspired with others yet unknown, set fire in a plaza containing building materials worth over N200 million and stole some valuable materials too.

Both defendants, Kalu, a building technician and Aneke, a plumber, denied the charge of criminal conspiracy, mischief and theft against them.

The judge, Mr Ibrahim Shekarau, then ordered that they be remanded at Keffi prison until the next adjourned date for hearing in the case.

He also ordered that their bail would depend on the discretion of the court as both defendants were not straight forward in their plea and adjourned hearing in the case until March 1.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Donald Hamen, told the court that the matter was reported to the police by Chinedu Obi, a businessman.

Hamen said the defendants conspired and set Obi’s plaza, known as “Pride Company” located behind building material, Mararaba, ablaze and stole valuable items.

He said Obi discovered the incident at about 7.40 p.m. when he arrived at the shopping complex.

The prosecutor added that the fire destroyed cartons of tiles, Chinese/Turkey doors and plumbing materials worth N200 million.

He explained that the defendants escaped to unknown destination until on Jan. 30 when Henry, the 2nd defendant was arrested with some of the valuable items.

“Some of the items includes the complainant’s Apple bag containing international passport, one iphone valued at N350,000, one Nokia Lumia phone, a wrist watch and two Diamond bank cheque booklet,” Hamen said.

The offences contravened the provisions of sections 97, 327 and 288 of the Penal Code. (NAN)
