Governance
Calabar, Feb. 8, 2017 (NAN) The National Publicity Secretary of Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), Bishop Emmah Isong, has called on Nigerian electorate to hold politicians accountable to ensure good governance in the country.
Isong made the call on Wednesday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Calabar.
He said that most Nigerian politicians were greedy and selfish, adding that they were in politics to pursue personal interests.
He condemned politicians in the country for abandoning the people that elected them into power.
“All what Nigerian politicians are doing is to pursue their personal dreams; they abandon the people that gave them the mandate.
“That is why they can defect to any party with ease just to feather their nests without recourse to the people that elected them.
“We should learn how to call our elected politicians to order, ask questions when necessary and if possible, recall them if they fail to deliver the dividends of democracy,’’ Isong said.
He regretted that politicians, after taking oath of office, chose to be travelling round the world without visiting their constituencies.
According to him, some politicians only visit their constituencies during elections and after the election, they return to the city.
“When it is close to the election, they come and distribute sewing machines and motorcycles to some people in their constituencies and on the day of elections, they distribute “maggi’’ and salt to deceive the electorate.
“They are not interested in building industries to generate employment for members of their constituencies.
“This is too bad and it is about time Nigerians should rise up and challenge their leaders to be accountable, ‘’ he said.
The cleric urged Christians to close ranks and synergise to pray for the unity of the country. (NAN)
