Abakaliki, Feb. 2, 2017 (NAN) The Ebonyi State Ministry for Environment has extended the monthly sanitation exercise to all local government areas of the state to ensure a clean environment and curb outbreak of diseases.

Mr Moses Nomeh, Commissioner for Environment, who disclosed this to News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday, said that the extension was designed to change the citizens’ attitude toward the need to promote cleanliness in the state.

He also said that the extension was also to curb the outbreak of airborne diseases, particularly diseases caused by filthy surroundings.

“It has been our practice to ensure cleanliness in the state but we are extending the sanitation exercise to all the local government areas.

“We are deploying the staff of the ministry to all zones in the local government areas and development centres with constant supervision.

“In the participatory clean-up exercise, everybody will be compelled to participate and we also expect the public to imbibe the attitude of cleanliness,’’ Nomeh noted.

NAN reports that offences during environmental sanitation periods include travelling, loitering and engaging in recreational activities.

NAN also reports that offenders face jail sentences, ranging from two months to one year, with options of fines, ranging from N2, 000 to N20, 000.(NAN)
