Minna, Feb. 2, 2017 ( NAN) Mr Mayala Musa, Assistant Controller-General of Prisons (ACG), Zone D Command, Minna, on Thursday said his command had adopted proactive measures against jail breaks
Musa, who disclosed in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Minna, said the zone was currently housing 6,437 inmates.
They are being accommodated in 36 prisons in FCT, Niger, Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara and Kwara states.
“We have eight prisons in Niger; four in Kwara; three in FCT; five in Zamfara; 10 in Kebbi; five in Sokoto and one borstal institution, specifically set up to rehabilitate underage children in Kwara, currently housing 141 children.
“We are battle ready to protect the inmates against any acts that could lead to loss of lives in any attempt of jail breaks in our area of supervision through our well coordinated security approach,’’ the ACG said.
He said that the service would continue to collaborate with the Police, Army and Department of State Services (DSS) to provide security platform in the 36 prisons.
Musa, however, called for more founding to enable the service rehabilitate and upgrade the existing facilities to international standard.
“We need to update professional officers on new methods of policing the prisons for effective and efficient service delivery.
“We also need to have standard clinics in all the prisons to effectively handle the health care needs of our inmates,’’ he said. (NAN)
