Ikeja, Aug. 24, 2018 (NAN) Nine persons were on Friday brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly belonging to an unlawful society.

The accused are Anuoluwapo Akinsola, 20; Tunde Friday, 18; Muri Lawal, 22; Lukmon Lolade, 22; Babatunde Isaac, 18; Seun Thomas, 22; Seyi Olukoya, 20; Deji Daniel, 19 and Omotola Wahab, 19.

They all reside at different parts of Mushin, a Lagos suburb and they are being tried for belonging to an unlawful society, breach of peace and robbery.

The Police Prosecutor, Insp. Emmanuel Ajayi, told the court that the accused committed the offences with some other persons still at large on Aug. 18 at Alfanda and Abiodun Streets, Mushin.

Ajayi said the accused conducted themselves in a manner that was likely to breach the peace when they disturbed some residents of Mushin.

“The accused, who belong to different unlawful societies clashed and started fighting.

“In the process of the fracas, they attacked residents and passers-by and robbed them of their valuables.

“Police stormed the scene and arrested nine of them, while the others escaped,” he said.

The offences, according to the prosecutor, contravened Sections 41, 168 and 298 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 41 stipulates a seven-year imprisonment for unlawful society, while Section 298 prescribes 14 years for robbery.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

In her ruling, the Magistrate, Mrs A.O. Layinka, granted them bail in the sum of N100, 000 each with one surety each in like sum.

Layinka ordered that the sureties should be gainfully employed and should show evidence of two years tax payment to Lagos State Government (LASG).

She adjourned the case until Sept. 13. (NAN)
