Abuja, May 17, 2018 (NAN) Eight officials of Utako Shop Owners and Traders Association, on Thursday appeared before an FCT High Court, Apo, for allegedly beating two men to coma.
The defendants: Nelson Onwuemeodo, Ezeliora Joseph, Felix Nweze, Emeka Okah, Zainab Nwuorgwu, Igwerna Alex, Ichia Micheal, and Moronke Afolabi, all denied committing the offences.
The defendants, six men and two women, are facing a three-count charge, bordering on conspiracy and attempted culpable homicide.
The prosecutor, CSP James Idachaba, told the court that the defendants committed the alleged offences on Dec. 14, 2017, at FCT High Court Jabi.
He alleged that the defendants beat up one Denis Nweke and Nasiru Adamu, mercilessly.
Idachaba further said that the defendants used iron rod and chairs to hit the men, and as a result, Nweke sustained grievous injury on his head.
He said that the offences contravened Sections 229, 95 and 246 of the Penal Code.
The counsel to the defendants, Mr Chuks Mpama-Erugo, prayed the court to grant bail to the defendants.
Idachaba objected to the bail, saying that the defendants if granted bail, would temper with the on-going investigations.
Justice Peter Kekemeke, in his ruling, granted bail to the defendants in the sum of N5million each, with two sureties each in like sum and adjourned the case until July 4, for further hearing. (NAN)
