Ile-Ife (Osun), March 23, 2018 (NAN) Five students of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun, are facing trial at an Ile-Ife Magistrates’ Court for alleged breach of peace, misdemeanour and assault.
The undergraduates allegedly committed the offences on March 21 at Moremi Hall in the university.
The Police Prosecutor, ASP Mathew Numoipre told the court that the accused conspired with others now at large to commit the offences.
He alleged that the students conducted themselves in a manner that caused a breach of the peace of the university community by preventing hall wardens from performing their legitimate duties at Moremi Hall of Residence.
According to him, the accused also assaulted some staff members of the university — Mrs B. A. Adeyemo, Mrs O. F. Omotosho, Mrs A. F. Kolawole and Mrs M. O. Eluwole.
The offences contravened Sections 249 (d), 351 and 517 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Osun, 2002.
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against them and their lawyer, Mrs Innocental Akhigbe, urged the court to grant the accused bail on liberal terms.
She promised that they would not jump bail if granted the reprieve.
Ruling on the bail application, Magistrate Ishola Omisade granted each of the accused bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties each in like sum.
Omisade said the sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction, adding that the sureties must be civil servants not below Grade Level 14.
In addition, they should produce three years tax clearance and submit two recent passport-size photographs each.
The case was adjourned until April 3 for hearing. (NAN)
