33rd convocation: BUK to graduate 8, 634 students

Kano, March 1, 2017 (NAN) No fewer than 8, 634 students are expected to graduate from Bayero University in Kano during the 33rd convocation ceremony of the University on Saturday, March 18.
Its Vice Chancellor, Prof Muhammad Yahuza, disclosed this while briefing newsmen in Kano on Wednesday.

He said out of the number, 5, 511 graduands would receive first degrees, 1, 885 would receive Master’s degrees, 63 would awarded with PhD, while the remaining 1, 175 would collect postgraduate diploma certificates.
According to him, 52 of the first degree graduates are expected to graduate with first class.
“As was the case in the last years, all graduands who attend the convocation ceremony will receive their certificate on the day they graduate,” he said.
The vice chancellor said that two eminent personalities would be conferred with honorary degrees for impacting positively on the lives of others.
He said the recipients would be a Kano-based business mogul, Sheik Isiyaka Rabi’u, and Mr Man Loong-Lee, an international industrialist who was a major employer of labour in the Northwest geopolitical zone.
“While  Rabi’u is being honoured for his scholarship in Qur’anic science and philanthropy, Mr Loong-Lee is being honoured for his industriousness, job creation and contributions to the Nigerian economy,”he said.
On the electric  challenges facing the school, the Vice Chancellor said the Department for International Development (DFID) had donated 400, 000 dollars to the university for the execution of its power project.
He said the power project. expected to generate 1,000 kilowatts when completed, would address the persistent power problem in the university.
Similarly, he said the MacArthur Foundation had recently award 700, 000 dollars (equivalent to N300 million) grant to the Faculty of Communication to support capacity building and enhance teaching and research in journalism. (NAN).
