The Police prosecutor, Insp. Emmanuel Ajayi, told the court that the accused committed the offences between November 2017 and July 2018 at Mushin, Lagos.
He said that the accused deceived the complainant, Mrs Feyishola Solaja, to pay the sum of N440, 000 before their firm could grant her loan; a representation they knew was false.
“The accused approached the complainant in November 2017 and persuaded her to come and obtain loan from their firm.
“The complainant went to their office to fill the form and she was asked to pay the money before any loan could be granted to her, which she did.
“Days after, the complainant went to their office to get the loan, and she discovered that they had absconded.
“In July 2018, another loan firm group approached her to obtain loan. She went to the address of the office to confirm their authenticity, but discovered that they were the same group that duped her.
“She reported the case to the police and the accused were arrested,” he said
The offences contravened Sections 287, 314 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 287 prescribes a three-year jail term for stealing, while Section 314 attracts 15 years for obtaining money under false pretences.
The accused, pleaded not guilty to the four counts of the charge.
In her ruling, the Magistrate, Mrs O.J Awope, granted the accused bail in the sum of N200, 000 each with two sureties each in like sum.
