Lagos, Jan. 31, 2017 (NAN) Twenty-five visually impaired candidates from the Bethesda Home for the Blind in Lagos have been prepared to sit for 2018 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) scheduled for March.

The Proprietress of the Home, Mrs Chioma Ohakwe, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Lagos that “their registration for the examination is ongoing’’.

According to her, preparations are in top gear towards ensuring that the candidates come tops in the examination.

She said the candidates were showing commitments in an effort to surpass records set by their sighted counterparts.

“This year, we will present 25 candidates for the all Computer Based Test (CBT) mode of the UTME.

“We had 23 candidates from the home, who wrote the examination 2017.

“All of them scored 200 and above with the highest, scoring 250.

“The least score by the candidates was 211 and I think this is an encouraging feat that is worth celebrating, considering their challenge,’’ Ohakwe said.

The Proprietress said that to ensure better performance in the coming examination, the home had employed more special teachers for the candidates.

“This year’s examination might take the same mode as that of 2017, by dictating questions to the candidates.

“This dictation mode is different from what we used to have for these special candidates in the past.

“In 2017, rather than using the Braille Note Apex machines, that is more convenient for the candidates, the JAMB opted for the dictation mode.

“However, we are fully ready for the examination as we have prepared the minds of the candidates.’’ (NAN)
