Dutse, Feb. 15, 2018 (NAN) The Fderal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Jigawa Command, says 2,045 road signs are needed on both federal and state roads in the state.
The FRSC Sector Commander in the state, Mr Angus Ibezim, made the disclosure during a press briefing as part of activities lined up to commemorate the 30th Anniversary of the FRSC in Dutse on Thursday.
Ibezim said the need for the road signs was discovered when the command carried out a road audit across the state in 2017.
He explained that the road audit was conducted in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Works and the Jigawa Government.
“The Corps being the lead agency in road traffic management, is also into road audit to ascertain the condition of roads.
“During the period under review, the Audit Unit of the Command in conjunction with Federal Ministry of Works and Jigawa Government carried out road audit in the state.
“The outcome of the exercise showed that a total of 2,045 various road signs are needed on the State and Federal roads within the state,” he said.
The sector commander noted that providing such signs on the roads would go along way in informing motorists on the conditions and nature of the roads.
“For instance, the signs will inform drivers about names of towns and villages on such roads, sharp bends, schools, hospitals, markets, animals crossing, school children crossing, rail lines, bumps, and many more.
“With this information, motorists will be more careful while driving because they will know whether they are approaching schools, hospitals or markets.
“And once drivers adhere to these road signs the rate of road crashes will be reduced to the barest minimal,” the sector commander explained.
He said the command had already submitted the outcome of the audit to both Jigawa Government and the Federal Government for necessary action. (NAN)
