Misau (Bauchi), Aug. 9, 2018 (NAN) A Bauchi-based NGO, Network for Water and Sanitation in Nigeria (NEWSAN), has called on the electorate in the state to vote for committed politicians who would provide potable water and improve environmental sanitation.
The group made the call on Thursday during a meeting in Misau Local Government area with community members from Darazo, Misau, Dambam and Giade Local Government areas of Bauchi Central Senatorial District.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the meeting was tagged ‘VOTE4WASH’.
Mr Ezekiel Sukumun, the NEWSAN Team Leader, said the meeting was organised by WaterAid Nigeria and funded by Hongkong Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC).
“This meeting is aimed at improving Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) in the state, the major problems in Nigeria, especially in rural areas.
“NEWSAN would encourage community members in the state to distribute pledge cards to aspirants seeking various elective offices to make written commitments that If given the mandate, would execute the WASH projects,” Sukumun said.
Mr Abdullahi Hamza, the Chairman of Darazo Local Government, said water, sanitation and hygiene must be taken seriously in all the local government areas in the state.
“I call on all the government councils in the state to emulate what is happening in Dass Local Government area.
“If you go to Dass, you can’t see any dirty, but clean environment, clean water and toilets all over the area,” he said.
Hamza, however, called on government to construct more public toilets in all the local government areas and also urged them to enact laws against open defecation.
Mrs Hajiya Habu, a representative of the Federation of Muslim Women Associations of Nigeria (FOMWAN), also called on government to intervene in putting a stop to people digging wells and soak-aways in the same place. (NAN)
