Elections
By Desmond Ejibas
Port Harcourt, Feb. 15, 2018 (NAN) Mr Debo Adesina, a South Africa-based security expert, has urged Nigerians in the Diaspora to contest for political offices in the 2019 general elections.
Adesina, who is also the Deputy Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in South Africa, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on phone that Nigerians living abroad had all qualities to make the desired change in the country.
He said that one way of achieving this was to come home and participate in the electoral process.
“ I sincerely believe that Nigerians in the Diaspora can make the change the people have been clamouring for.
“ They have the experience, knowledge and contacts to make the difference.
“ It is important that we return home and get the permanent voter’s card ahead of the elections,” he said.
Adesina said that he had registered in Kosofe Local Government Area of Lagos and was considering contesting for a House of Representatives or state House of Assembly seat.
“ I am still considering any of the options. A decision will be made on the seat we will go for. It is important to be part of the democratic process by coming home to register and contest in the elections,” he said.
He said though the experience might not be easy, it would be a rewarding exercise for one to vie for public office.
“ The voter’s card is a big tool for the elections. I urge Nigerians in the Diaspora to get it as a first step in being part of the democratic process at home.
“ Nigeria is our country and it is our duty to be part of the change process,” Adesina said. (NAN)
