Lafia, May 22, 2018 (NAN) The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has sought for partnership with the Federal University Lafia in Nasarawa towards conducting free, fair and credible election in 2019.
Dr Uthman Ayidagba, Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Nasarawa State stated this on Tuesday when he paid a visit to the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Mohammed Liman in Lafia.
According to him, the partnership is imperative given the apprehension caused by the activities in the build-up to the general election.
Ayidagba stressed the need for a credible election, saying that anything short of that would not be acceptable.
“Our mandate is to conduct credible poll right from the States’ House of Assembly to the Presidential election.
“But we cannot do it alone, hence lecturers, National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members were used in previous elections.
“The involvement of these groups in the conduct of election has given some credibility,’’ he added.
The REC, therefore, assured the public of the commission’s determination to conduct credible election in 2019.
Responding, Liman, expressed gratitude to the commissioner for the visit.
He said the university was ready anytime to release its academic staff to participate in national assignments like the general election.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the REC also visited the state’s headquarters of the NYSC where he solicited for a similar partnership. (NAN)
