Abuja, July 16, 2018 (NAN) A Lugbe Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, on Monday sentenced a man, Isah Umar, 20, to four months imprisonment for stealing a cell phone worth N25, 000 at Eid praying ground.

Umar, of Mabushi village Abuja, was arraigned on a count charge of stealing, an offence he admitted committing.

The judge, Mr Abdullahi Garba, however, gave Umar an option to pay N10, 000  fine.

Garba said that, “the punishment would have been stiffer if the convict had not saved the court the pains of protracted prosecution.’’

Earlier, the prosecutor, Mrs Ndidi Ukoha, had told the court that one Halidu Hassan of Kuchingoro village, Airport Road, Abuja, reported the matter at the Lugbe Police Station on June 15.

“On the said date at about 9:30 p.m., while the complainant was at Eid praying ground, Umar intentionally and smartly removed his infinix phone valued at N25, 000 from his pocket,’’ Ukoha said.

The prosecutor said that during police investigation, the convict admitted committing the offence.

The offence contravened Section 287 of the Penal Code. (NAN)
