Ikeja, July 12, 2018 (NAN) The two men, who allegedly robbed a man of his phone valued at N13,000 at knifepoint, were on Thursday remanded at the Kirikiri Prison by an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

After refusing to take the plea of the accused, the Magistrate, Mrs B.O. Osunsanmi, ordered that they should be kept behind bars, pending advice from the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

Idowu Ayinla, 24, a bricklayer, and Olawale Yakubu, 23, a bus conductor, whose addresses are unknown, are being tried for conspiracy, stealing and armed robbery.

The Prosecutor, ASP Ezekiel Ayorinde, told the court that the accused committed the offences on June 2 at Jibowu, Lagos.

He alleged that the accused and others still at large, armed themselves with dagger knives to rob one Akinpelu Dada of his phone valued at N13,000.

“The complainant was in his vehicle in traffic when the accused forcefully opened the door, pointing a knife at him, threatened to kill him if he refused to comply.

“They demanded for his phone which he quickly released to them for fear of the unknown.

“When they left his vehicle, the complainant raised an alarm, shouting thieves, and good Samaritans gave them a hot chase, and two were arrested, while others escaped.

The stolen phone, dagger knives and some charms were recovered,’’ the prosecutor said.

The offences contravened Sections 287, 297, 299 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 287 prescribes three years imprisonment for stealing, while Section 297 attracts 21 years for arming self with offensive weapons.

The case was adjourned until Aug. 13 for continuation of hearing. (NAN)
