2 men remanded in prison over alleged gunpoint phone robbery

Lagos, Sept. 15, 2017 (NAN) An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court on Friday remanded two men, Ubi Ebri and Prince Ofem, in Kirikiri Prisons after they pleaded guilty to armed robbery.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs B. O. Osunsanmi, who gave the ruling, said that the accused should remain behind bars pending sentence.

Both accused, whose addresses were not provided, are facing charges of conspiracy and armed robbery.

The prosecutor, Insp. Simeon Imhonwa, had told court that the accused committed the offences at 9.00 p.m. on July 18 in Ikorodu area of Lagos State.

He said the accused conspired with others still at large and robbed a woman, Ogechi Uzoechi of her mobile phone valued at N50,000 at gunpoint.

Imhonwa said the accused, who were armed with a locally made pistol and other dangerous weapons, robbed the complainant of her Techno C8 mobile phone.

He alleged that the complainant, who was returning home from work, was attacked by the accused, who also pointed a gun at her.

“They were later apprehended by the police at Ijede in Ikorodu during a stop-and-search by a team of anti-crime police.”

The offences contravened Sections 295 and 297 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the accused may be sentenced to 21 years imprisonment, according to Section 295 of the Criminal Law.

Osunsanmi directed that the case file should be duplicated and a copy sent to the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice.

The case was adjourned until Oct. 9 for a review of facts and sentence. (NAN)
