2 men face forgery, N53m fraud charges

Lagos, Jan. 10, 2018 (NAN) Two men — Abass Ajaguna and Chamberlain Ugbor — who allegedly obtained N53 million under false pretences, were on Wednesday docked at an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.
The accused — Ajaguna, 57, and Ugbor, 51 –were, however, released on N3 million bails.
The duo is facing a 14-count charge bordering on conspiracy, stealing, fraud and forgery to which they had pleaded not guilty.
Police Insp. Chinalu Uwadione, the prosecutor, had told the court that the accused committed the offences sometime between 2015 and 2016 at Marine Beach, Apapa, Lagos.
He alleged they the duo made a false declaration and swore falsely on oath as published in national daily that they lost the original Certificate of Occupancy of a landed property of about 4999.914 square metres at Apapa.
According to him, the accused posed to be in a position to sell the landed property to the Managing Director of Ultimate Oil and Gas Nigeria Ltd, Mr Awalu Ahmed Ilu.
Uwadione also said the accused forged the Deed of Assignment and the signatures of the rightful owners in a bid to sell the land.
“The accused obtained the sum of N37.5 million, N2.8 million, N10 million, N53 million and N200,000 at various times being payment for the land at Bonny Road, Marine Beach.”
The offences contravened Sections 86,(1), 115, 298, 314(1), 365 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Oluyemisi Adelaja, admitted Ajaguna to a bail of N2 million and Ugbor to a bail of N1 million with two responsible sureties each in like sum.
She adjourned the case until Feb. 12 for mention. (NAN)
