2 employees in court over alleged stealing of employer’s N2m

Ikeja, March 8, 2018(NAN) Two employees,  James Lawal and Abiodun Adegbenro, were on Thursday arraigned in an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, for allegedly stealing company’s N2 million.

The defendants, Lawal, 54, and Adegbenro, 37, residents of Abule-Egba, Lagos, are being tried for conspiracy and stealing.

According to the prosecutor, ASP Ezekiel Ayorinde, the accused persons committed the offences sometime in 2017 at Abule-Egba, Lagos.

He said that the accused persons conspired to steal N2 million, belonging to Denon Finance and Cooperative.

“The accused persons stole their employer’s money,” he said.

Ayorinde said that the defendants, who were cooperative manager and marketing manager respectively, were asked to deposit the money in the bank but divert it to their own use.

“The accused persons converted the company’s money to their own without remitting it into the company’s account.’’

The prosecutor said that the theft was discovered during an audit, while the defendants were arrested and handed over to the police.

 

The offences contravened Sections 287(7) and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015(Revised).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 287(7) prescribes seven years jail term for stealing.

The accused pleaded innocence of the offences and were granted bail each in the sum of N250,000 with two sureties each in like sum.

The Magistrate, Mrs O.J. Awope, said that the sureties should be gainfully employed and show evidences of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

The case was adjourned until March 15 for mention. (NAN)
