Lagos, Nov. 22, 2017 (NAN) The Women’s Technology Empowerment Centre (W.TEC) is targeting to reach 3,000 females during this year’s 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.

The Communications Officer of W.TEC, Mr Adeyemi Odutola, made this known in a statement in Lagos on Wednesday.

Odutola said that W.TEC would take the campaign to six secondary schools and two higher institutions of learning to achieve the target.

NAN reports that W.TEC is a Nigerian non-governmental organisation working to empower girls and women socially and economically, using information and communication technology.

It organises projects and workshops, which help to build technology skills and literacy among women.

16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence is an international campaign to challenge violence against women and girls.

The campaign runs every year from Nov. 25 – the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women – to Dec. 10 – Human Rights Day.

According to Odutola, W.TEC will use the 2017 edition of the campaign as a platform to educate women and girls on ways to stay safe online.

“W.TEC has been supporting 16 Days of Activism for the past eight years by organising online safety workshops for secondary school girls in Lagos State.

“The 2017 campaign will feature online safety workshops for ladies, too, which is a big plus for W.TEC’s annual campaign impact.

“The workshop modus operandi involves a one-hour presentation, featuring a two-session programme – an online safety session followed by a side attraction session on self-defence techniques for females.

“The UN in 2001 declared Nov. 25 to Dec. 15 the period for this campaign to be held annually, to create a sustained awareness for the fight against gender-based violence,” he said.

According to him W.TEC will make this year’s campaign the most comprehensive as its safer internet workshop series will feature materials to illustrate latest strategies against dangers women face on the internet.

He said that the dangers were because the digital space remained dynamic.

“In all ramifications, the workshop will help to equip all participants with the latest techniques, tools and information to stay safer online.

“Apart from having the campaign conducted by well-trained hands, major materials used for the workshop are furnished from Facebook’s online safety digital manuals,” Odutola said.(NAN)
