Lagos, Sept. 24, 2017 (NAN) Oyinkansola Adeshewa, a 15-year-old poet, on Sunday in Lagos called for organisation of poetry talent shows to showcase poets in the country and boost the entertainment industry.

Adeshewa told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that poets in the country are not challenged to improve on their works due to lack of enough competition platform.

According to her, other genres of entertainment like dance and music gained prominence because the entertainment industry groomed them over the years.

She said that poetry could boost the nation’s gross domestic product because there are lots of good poets in the country.

“The Federal Government and private investors should know that poetry is another genre of entertainment that can improve the country’s GDP if well harnessed.

“That is why I am suggesting a poetry talent show to showcase our work in Nigeria and attract entertainment lovers, at the same time boost tourism.

“Just like we have the Maltina dance hall promoting dance and other shows promoting music, let us have a poetry talent show to promote poetry because we have good poets here in Nigeria.

“This can be organised annually,’’ she said.

Adeshewa called on Nigerians to engage the services of poets in events just like the comedians and musicians, adding that poetry enabled listeners to think deep while being entertained. (NAN)
