Moscow, Jan. 9, 2017 (dpa/NAN) At least eight people have died from hypothermia in Ukraine and five neighbouring Belarus in recent days, a report said on Monday.

The temperatures sank below minus 20 degrees Celsius amid an unusual cold spell affecting much of Europe.

More than 40 people in the Minsk region alone have sought medical attention for cold weather-related injuries since New Year’s Day, local authorities said.

Some localities had to face the extreme cold without electric heating as power outages related to the unusually low temperatures were reported throughout Ukraine and Belarus.

Temperatures hovered around minus 25 Celsius in the Russian capital on Monday but were expected to rise by about 15 degrees in the coming days.

“The deep freeze will end tonight,” Roman Wilfand, Head of the Hydrometeorological Centre of Russia said. (dpa/NAN)
