Accident
Harare, Aug. 22, 2017 (Xinhua/NAN) Ten people died and 13 others were injured when a commuter omnibus collided head-on with an oncoming vehicle in Murehwa, 59 km east of the capital, Harare, the police said on Tuesday.
Police spokesperson, Charity Charamba, was quoted by the state-run Herald newspaper as saying “the commuter omnibus was evading a Vehicle Inspection Department (VID) check point when it rammed into the oncoming vehicle.
“A commuter omnibus was traveling from Murehwa toward Harare with about 23 passengers.
“It was stopped at a VID checkpoint and the driver wanted to evade the check point.
“He then veered into the right lane, which is the opposite lane, where there was also another commuter omnibus,” he said.
Charamba urged drivers to be always cautious when on the roads and to obey road rules and regulations.
The accident comes barely a month after 11 people were burnt beyond recognition while 14 others were seriously injured when a car collided head-on with another vehicle in Mvurwi, 69 km north of Harare.
Road accidents are a common occurrence on Zimbabwe’s roads, with police mostly attributing the accidents to speeding. (Xinhua/NAN)
