    Strike

    By Mohammad Tijjani

Kaduna, Sept. 25, 2018 (NAN) The General Secretary, Textile and Garment Workers Union, Issa Aremu, on Tuesday backed the decision of the Organised Labour to proceed on strike over new national minimum wage.

Aremu, a governorship aspirant in Kawra State under the Labour Party said in a press statement issued in Kaduna that he fully supports the agitation to secure decent living wage for workers in the country.

He however said it was not too late for the government to avert the strike, if it would conclude the year-long negotiation before the expiration of the deadline.

Aremu said, the Labour Party would not hesitate to mobilize its members in the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory to join the mass protest by Organised Labour, if no agreement was reached.

“The key to sustainable development is labour productivity in both public and private sectors which is only possible with motivated paid workers and through adequate pensions,” he added.

Aremu noted that government economic recovery would make little impact unless the country end the “persistent crisis of compensation of the working class through enhanced purchasing power which is only possible through prompt and adequate payment of minimum and living wage for the employed workforce.

“For us in the Labour Party, we remain committed to decent work agenda which include payment of a living wage to all categories of workers in the public and private sectors, as investment in human capital is an investment in nation building.” (NAN)

  • Aisha Buhari disowns ADC over fraud allegation

    Allegation

    By Ahmed Ubandoma

Abuja, Sept. 25, 2018 (NAN) The wife of the President, Aisha Buhari, has refuted allegations suggesting that she used her Aide De Camp, CSP Sani Baba-Inna, to collect N2.5 billion from unsuspecting members of the Public.

Director, Information, Mr Suleiman Haruna, released a statement on her behalf on Tuesday in Abuja.

” I wish to use this opportunity to inform the general public that I have never sent any of my staff to collect any favours on my behalf or on behalf of my children and will never do so,” she said.

” Baban-Inna has been my ADC since 2016 and has been associated with me ever since.”

She was surprised  that the initial investigation showed Baba-Inna allegedly  used her name for some  suspicious activities.

She denied having any connection  with his arrest and detention as the Nigeria Police, being the constituted authority, have the power to do so.

” It was The Nigeria Police Force, being his employer, that arrested him to investigate the allegations levelled against him because the case  is within their jurisdiction,” she said.

Aisha urged those  who were the alleged victims of Baban-Inna to get across to him and retrieve whatever he took from them.

She said  she will not condone fraudulent behaviour by any of her staff.

She also called on individuals in authority to deal with errant aides involved with extortion by name-dropping.

She said the Buhari administration was voted into office based on trust and confidence of the people to fight corruption (NAN).

  • FRSC recruitment: FCT applicants commend screening exercise

    Recruitment

    By Kelechi Ogunleye

Abuja, Sept. 25, 2018 (NAN) Applicants undergoing the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) recruitment exercise into different cadres within the Corps on Tuesday, commended the  Commission for its commitment in ensuring the exercise was well coordinated and hitch free.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the FRSC scheduled its screening exercise and physical fitness assessment on recruitment for Sept. 24 to 29.

NAN also reports that the venue for the screening exercise are the National stadium and Mogadishu cantonment, Abuja, respectively.

Eziemefe Godslove, an applicant said that he was amazed at the commitment and organization of the screening officials during the exercise.

”I got here  6 a.m and to my surprise,  the FRSC officials were already on ground coordinating and attending to applicants who came early.

“I was impressed because it meant they will attend to me on time and here I am, almost done with my screening.

Egbekwu Ndozie, another applicant said that the officers on ground had been treating them well and it was well coordinated, as applicants were paired in groups to aid a fast and orderly screening.

He,however, noticed that there were applicants spilled from Monday screening exercise to Tuesday, due to one reason or the another.

However, Akinpelu Emmanuel, an applicant, was of the opinion that some part of the screening exercise could have been done online to save time and ease stress.

According to him, the commission could have employed the use of online registration, noting that technology had made such screening exercises easier.

“In order to attend to everyone on time, some things should have been done online.

“The bio-data form we filled online was also given to us here to fill again which was not necessary in my opinion because we are in the 21st century and should try to reduce the use of paper.

“Most documentation could be done online with the reference code we were provided with by the commission registration,” he said.

Some petty traders at the venue expressed their excitement at the screening exercise due to the increase in sales they had experienced since the exercise began.

Sadiat Ahmed, a trader at the venue, said that she was so happy the screening took place where her shop was located because the exercise had helped to boost her sales.

“I have not been selling since I got this shop because we are many here and the shop rent is on the high side.

“Most times we just sleep and would be unable to realize any sales from the shop for a whole month.

“ But since this screening started here, I have been busy selling to the extent that I don’t have time to do any other thing,” she said.

Another petty trader, Bunmi Adeola, said that the sales had been tremendous because the turnout of applicants was huge and they had been partronising her business,”  Adeola said. (NAN)

  • D’Tigress edge Argentina 75-70 to record back-to-back FIBA World Cup victory

    By Kayode Adebiyi

    Basketball

Tenerife (Spain), Sept. 25, 2018 (NAN) The Nigerian women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, recorded their second-straight win at the ongoing FIBA Women’s World Cup with a hard-fought 75-70 victory over Argentina in Spain on Tuesday.

The keenly contested game, which was played at the San Cristobal de la Laguna, Tenerife, saw the Nigerian side take the first quarter 19-13.

The Argentines, who before the match against Nigeria were defeated in their first two games against Turkey and Australia, showed some intent in the second quarter with a 16-13 edge over D’Tigress.

Both sides battled hard in the third quarter and D’Tigress found their South American opponents a hard nut to crack as they settled for a 19-19 tie.

D’Tigress were fighting for a chance to clinch second place in Group B, which also comprises group leaders Australia and Turkey.

Both teams then went to the final quarter and that was where D’Tigress kept their nerve to win the quarter 24-22.

Argentina were no doubt playing their best game of the tournament against D’Tigress, and even took the lead at some point in the final quarter.

However, it was D’Tigress who stepped up their game and put up some brilliant defensive performance in the final four minutes against a desperate opponent.

The game against Turkey had Sarah Ogoke as Nigeria’s top performer, but it was Promise Amukamara who stepped up this time with a team-high 16 points.

Aisha Mohammed and Ezinne Kalu followed with 12 apiece.

Melisa Gretter scored a game-high 21 points for Argentina.

Coach Otis Hughley, while commending his players’ resilience, said after the game: “These players have got resolve and I have got no idea where they are digging that out from to win another close game.

“They have no reference point at this kind of level to have taken it from. That was unbelievable and there is no coaching at this point with this team.

“These kids of mine just went out, played hard and made plays again when they needed to.”

D’Tigress guard, Ezinne Kalu, also said their victory was a sweet experience.

“It feels good off the back of making history with our first win against Turkey to have now followed it up by beating Argentina.

“We’re working hard and staying focused. It is exciting for us making more and more history with a team that is very closely bonded together and we want to continue on this journey for longer,” she assured.

As second-placed team in Group B, Nigeria will now face Greece in the quarter final qualifications, and the winner of that one game will meet the USA in the quarter-finals.

Group leaders Australia secured automatic quarterfinal qualification.

The match between Nigeria and Greece is scheduled for Wednesday. (NAN)
