    By Aisha Cole
Abuja, Sept. 26, 2018 (NAN) The Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC) says it will sign a Memorandum of Understanding with shipping companies on reducing the cost of doing business at ports to 35 per cent.

The NSC Executive Secretary, Mr Hassan Bello, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Abuja.

He spoke on the sideline of a two-day Sub-Regional Workshop and Joint Standing committee meeting with the theme “Port Concession in West and Central Africa: Impact on Economies of Member States’’.

“Already Nigerian Shippers’ Council is about to sign a very important MoU with the Shipping Companies. This will reduce drastically by about 35 per cent the cost of doing business in Nigeria.

“So if we perfect our system; we will find efficiency, we will find competition, because competition drives down the costs.

“We want the cost of transportation to be minimal as part of the cost of production.

”Right now, the cost of transportation is very high but it is our hope that after the Single Window, the ICTN (International Cargo Tracking Notes); after negotiation with shipping companies, the shipping cost will come down very drastically,” Bello said.

He said that a review of port concession was ongoing to enable government improve on trade facilitation.

Bello said there would not be a meaningful review of port concessioning agreement without the input of the NSC.

    Cue in audio

“For the review of concessioning agreement for now Nigerian Shipper’s Council is not participating and Nigerian Shippers’ council is a representative of so many things.

“You cannot have a meaningful port concessioning agreement without the input of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council.

“So I am aware that the Federal Ministry of Transportation is looking at this because one has to take the interest of all users. This is what happened in the first instance when the negotiations on the port concessioning were inclusive.

“We should operate on open society, so that enemies of open society, will not succeed in this concessioning agreement.

“Shippers’ Council will insist that it should be part of the concessioning agreement because Nigerian Shippers’ Council is a Port Economic Regulator.

“It is also the representative of the users and also the providers of shipping services,” Bello said.

  • CBN urges industrialists to access, utilize financing schemes for business growth

    Business

Enugu, September 26, 2018 (NAN) The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), has urged industrialists and businessmen in Nigeria to take advantage of its low interest loans to grow their businesses.

The Branch Controller of CBN in Enugu, Mr. Emmanuel Iweala, made the call at an Open Membership Forum organised by the Enugu Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (ECCIMA) in Enugu on Wednesday.

Iweala said the aspect of offering loans to finance and grow businesses through its development financing intervention schemes was backed by Section 31 of the CBN Act (2007).

“CBN has made available different financial schemes by which individuals, corporate bodies and state governments can easily access after meeting certain criteria that have well been simplified.

“The loans under the available schemes have an interest rate of just nine per cent payable within one to seven years tenure as the case maybe,” he said.

The branch Controller mentioned some of its financial intervention schemes to include Agricultural Credit Guarantee Scheme Fund (ACGSF), Micro Small and Medium Development Fund and Commercial Agricultural Credit Scheme.

Others, he said, are the Anchors Borrowers Programme, Youth Enterprise Development Programme (YEDP) and Agric-business/Small and Medium Enterprise Investment Scheme (AG-SMEIS).

“The Anchors Borrowers Programme, the AG-SMEIS, the Micro Small and Medium Enterprises Development Fund and YEDP schemes are most beneficial and favourable to businessmen.

“For example, ECCIMA only needs to key into the Anchors Borrowers Programme, identify a crop of its members who can grow and thereafter, access a loan of up to N40b.

“In Enugu, a total of 9, 907 farmers in 2018 have only been able to access just N2b out of the scheme’s capital base of N40b.

“The present state government has not fully utilized the N200b available to it under the Commercial Agricultural Credit Scheme (CACS).

“It was only former Governor Sullivan Chime’s administration that accessed N1b under the CACS scheme before leaving office,” he said.

The financial expert explained that the AG-SMEIS loan was strictly to finance Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) with just a five per cent interest rate.

According to him, N60b is available for industrialists under the AG-SMEIS and has also been largely under utilized by businessmen due to lack of awareness of the availability of the scheme.

Iweala opined that if the loans made available to individuals, State and corporate bodies were fully accessed and utilized, it would bring about economic stimulation, diversification of agricultural products.

He reiterated that CBN was keen to playing a key role in improving access to finance for entrepreneurship development.

Speaking on behalf of the state government, the Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Mr Sam Nwobodo, said the said the government of Enugu was ready to take steps that will allow business in the state to grow.

Nwobodo, represented by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Commerce, Dr Moses Otiji, said the state governor, Chief Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi was a business oriented man who was mindful of what it took to grow a business.

Earlier, the President of ECCIMA, Mr Emeka Udeze pledged its commitment at providing an enabling environment for businesses to thrive.

Udeze said the forum was organised by ECCIMA as part of its commitment to helping members grow their businesses through interaction with stakeholders in the finance, energy sector and leadership.

“This forum will afford our members the opportunity to interact with experts whose services impacts the business sector.

“They will be engaging experts from the Central Bank of Nigeria, Bank of Industry, Enugu Electricity Distribution Company, the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) government and the Corporate Affairs Commission.

“Through this interaction, members will make known the different challenges they are facing in their various businesses while the appropriate expert will give recommendations and the way out, and ECCIMA can then know when to come in,” he said.

He pleaded with the state government to allow businesses grow first and be deeply rooted before imposing tax on them saying early imposition of double taxation killed business.

The president noted that certain government policies discouraged potential businessmen and women and stunted the growth of already existing businesses.

The Chief Strategy Officer of Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC), Mr Uttam Zalte, said the company was conscious of the role of constant electricity supply to grow businesses.

Represented by EEDC’s Head of Communications, Mr Chukwuemeka Ezeh, said it was such feeling that has prompted EEDC to increase power supply to industrially concentrated areas.

“We have dedicated power lines that supplies 20 hours electricity to industrial areas such as Agbani, Nnewi, Emene, Tollgate, Orba and 3-3 in Onitsha.

“It is however, pathetic that as we strive to increase electricity supply to aid business growth, some customers are bent on frustrating this effort through non-payment of bills.

“EEDC supplies electricity load worth N4b monthly but only rakes in N3b and we will continue to operate within the limit of our finances,” Zalte said.

In the same vein, the Resident Electoral Commission of INEC in Enugu State, Dr. Emeka Ononamadu, said the commission will continue to conduct credible elections reflective of the people’s wish.

Ononamadu, who was represented by the Head, Electoral Procedures Department, Mr Joseph Ineji, urged the business community to support credible election that would produce business oriented leaders. (NAN)

  • Independence Day: Group to tell Nigeria’s unity story in photos

Independence Day: Group to tell Nigeria’s unity story in photos

    Independence
    By Chijioke Okoronkwo
Abuja, Sept. 26, 2018 (NAN) A group under the aegis of a project tagged: ‘ANISZA 2018,’ has concluded arrangements toward showcasing the untold stories of Nigeria’s unity since independence in 1960 with pictures.

The Project Visionary, Miss Novo Isioro, who briefed newsmen on Wednesday in Abuja, said that the exhibition would be part of activities marking Nigeria’s 58th Independence Day celebration.

She said that the virtual art project aimed at promoting unity amongst Nigerians would be formally inaugurated at SARIUS PALMETUM botanical garden, Maitama, on Oct. 1 being Nigeria’s Independence Day.

According to Isioro, who is the Special Assistant on Visual Communication and Personal Photographer to the Vice President, ANISZA 2018 will be the first ever international photo exhibition of the Nigerian unity story.

She said that the tag `ANISZA’ was derived from the first two letters of three indigenous Nigerian languages–Anoko Onu – Igbo word for togetherness; Isokan – Yoruba word for unity; and Zaman Tare – Hausa words for one tribe.

“We have seen contentions among adherents of the various religious and ethnic groups in the country.

“There have been tensions that have been generated because of our differences; I think that this diversity should be celebrated and not be a problem.

“So, I just thought about this tendency towards disunity, and as a visual artist, I understand how image tells the story more than words. So, I thought that we should use pictures to tell the stories of our strength in diversity.

“The idea is to use pictures to speak to the people to stop the agitations, the drama, the hate speeches, division and instead work together. This is practically focused on young people.

“ I realised that most people, especially the young ones, really don’t understand our history,’’ she said.

On sustainability of the initiative, Isioro said that a mobile gallery would be used so that the project could be taken to the 36 states with focus on schools.

She said that group was collaborating with states and federal ministries to take the gallery to schools in their domain in order to get as many children as possible to benefit from the project.

According to her, students from schools across the country are invited for the exhibition.

On his part, the Managing Editor of Daily Times, Mr Bonaventure Melah, said the issue of unity in Nigeria was important and needed to be strengthened.

Melah said that Nigeria needed patriotic citizens more than oil because the problem of unity had to come first of all from lack of patriotism.

“No country can achieve greatness when the citizens do not love the country.

“It is only when we bring our various unique differences to the centre that we can form a greater and prosperous nation,” he said.

Dr Mayo Adediran, a former top Federal Government official on Museums and Archives, now a Consultant, said preserving Nigeria’s cultural heritage was as important as promoting the country’s economic potentials.

Adeniran said that sometimes human memory might fail us but when we put concentrated information in a monument, it became a historical fact that jolted the memory each time we walked past.

Mr Sarumi Sadiq, one of the technical managers in the group, said that the project intended to `excite and spark’ all the senses of unity to see that Nigeria indeed became a great nation.

In his remark, the Project Manager, Murphy Imamezi, said that love was what drove true patriotism and a sense of unity among any people.

President Muhammadu Buhari is expected to declare the exhibition open on Oct. 1(NAN)

  • Association wants Aug. 20 declared as Traditional Religion Day

    Religion
    By Taiye Baiyerohi
Lagos, Sept. 26, 2018 (NAN) The Association of African Traditional Religion of Nigeria and Overseas (AATREN) has appealed to the Federal Government to declare Aug. 20 as public holiday to celebrate African traditional religion.

Its Public Relations Officer, Mr Lekan Ajirotutu, made the plea in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Wednesday.

He said the religion was crucial to the socio-economic advancement of the country.
According to him, declaring Aug. 20 annually as official day for traditional worshipers to celebrate their deities and past warriors would endear a lot of Nigerians to embrace the nation’s cultural heritage.

“Several efforts had been made at States and Federal Government levels to ensure that the traditional religion is given recognition and practised but all to no avail,’’ he said.

Ajirotutu said this would boost tourism as international tourists who found the religion interesting would visit the country on such day.

According to him, Osun State had declared Aug. 20 as African traditional religion day since three years ago, saying that this should be emulated by other state governments.

“Just as we have a day earmarked for the Christians and Muslims for the celebration of their religion, we the traditional worshipers want a day earmarked for us too.

“African traditional religion cannot be compared with Christianity or Islam because they are foreign to us but traditional religion is our root.

“We are not ritualists neither are we primitive.

“It is so sad to know that some of those who imported the western religion value our religion more than we do,’’ he said.

Ajirotutu said that African traditional religion was deeply rooted in the belief and worship of “Olodumare’ (Supreme God) through the assistance of divinities.

He noted that traditional religion should be acknowledged by the Federal Government so that it could be well packaged for more acceptance globally. (NAN)

Expert seeks stakeholders’ collaboration to end gas flaring
    Gas
    By Yunus Yusuf
Lagos, Sept. 26, 2018 (2018) Mr Dada Thomas, president, Nigerian Gas Association (NGA) on Wednesday urged stakeholders in the oil and gas industry to collaborate to find a lasting solution to gas flaring in the country.
Thomas said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos, while reacting to the 2019 deadline set by the Federal Government to end gas flaring.
NAN reports that the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr Ibe Kachikwu, on Sept. 24 said defaulting companies would have their licences revoked if they failed to stop gas flaring in their operations.
According to Thomas, it takes time to achieve total gas flare-out because it costs lots of capital to convert the gas flared to gas for domestic consumption.
He said revoking operators’ licences was a tough sanction as achieving zero gas flare was a gradual process.
Thomas, who is also the managing director, Frontier Energy, said Nigeria had made great strides in reducing gas flares in the country.
He said oil and gas operators had reduced gas flares from two billion Standard Cubic Feet (SCF) per day to 700 million SCf per day.
It will be recalled that Kachikwu disclosed that the government would revoke the licences of companies that flared gas at the 2018 Buyers’ Forum/Stakeholders’ organised by the Gas Aggregation Company of Nigeria (GACN) in Abuja.
He said the Federal Government had been locked in a battle with upstream oil companies over the issue of gas flaring.
He noted that the Federal Government was keen on ending gas flaring, but oil companies still gave several reasons why gas flaring could not be ended.
“Government wants to end flare, oil companies still give lots of reasons why flare cannot be ended.
“The bottom line is cash call and money. But the reality is that whether or not we deal with cash call issues, it is not an optional agenda, it is a compulsive immediate agenda.
“It is destructive to the populace; it is intolerable in developed countries and it should not be tolerated here either,” he said.
Kachikwu added that any oil company that could not find a way to ending its flare ought not to be producing. (NAN)
