  • UNILAG introduces more entrepreneurship programmes for students

    Entrepreneurship
    By Chinyere Nwachukwu
Lagos, Dec. 22, 2018 (NAN) The University of Lagos on Saturday said that its students were on course in changing the narrative of university education in the country through its various entrepreneurship programmes.

The Deputy Vice Chancellor (Development Services), Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, said this on the sideline of the Second Level Investment Pitching Competition.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the pitching competition is an off-shoot of the recent ‘Impact Week’, a design thinking workshop for both students and staff of the university, organised in collaboration with Lufthansa, a German airline.

The competition came up with 24 teams that came up with new designs and prototypes.

The prototypes and designs were in the areas of Urban Agriculture, Tourism, Environment, Energy, Health, Education, Commerce and Finance, among others.

According to Ogunsola, the university has been in the business of developing innovation and entrepreneurship in the last few years in the realisation that it is only through such steps that Nigeria can truly move forward.

She noted that one of the most important tasks of the university currently was to ensure that every student would graduate as a job creator, ready to solve most societal challenges.

“Today, I must say that I am so proud of these our students who have come up with several designs, waiting to be tapped into.

“We can confidently tell you today that our students are amazing and burning with a lot of creative ideas.

“All they need is the ability environment and training to allow them express themselves and indeed when we challenged them, they rose up to the occasion.

“The major way we arrived at this was through design thinking which means that we have changed our training styles,’’ Ogunsola said.

She noted that the nation’s universities were indeed not as bad as was perceived by most people, saying there were a lot of changes currently going on there.

“I am so proud of our students. In all, we have about 32 prototypes.

“From the teams that we have put together, in various areas of life such as health, tourism, waste management, agriculture and others, they have come up with a lot of innovation.

“These are the kind if things that will move this country forward.

“Currently we have an entrepreneurship centre but there is an urgent need to expand it for us to have various businesses coming out from our university.

“As of today, in this year alone, we have about five patents and we already have another 10 going forward.

“So what we realise is that when we did not have a centre that was driving this, these developments were hidden but now with the centre in place, we are unearthing a lot of creativity, potential and finding out that our students could actually develop so many things,’’ Ogunsola said.

According to her, a major setback has also been lack of publicity; without it, a lot of people would still not believe in the budding talents of the students.

The don said that the university will continue to collaborate with other entrepreneurs outside the university as the whole idea was a cross-fertilisation of ideas.

“Nobody knows everything and even our students are motivated by what they see outside as well as problems of industries that they can solve. It is only through this that Nigeria can be on its way to development, ‘’ she said.

According to her, no country can develop if it fails to work with its universities.

Ogunsola said that the whole essence was about rubbing hands together, saying  that “if as a people, the country gives up on its and everything gives way, then there will be no way forward’’.

The don said that universities could only develop by being challenged and urged that UNILAG be more challenged as the institution could rise up to any level.

“We have the staff and as we are challenged, you will be surprised at what we can do. So, we are calling on the public to come and rub minds with the institution.

“Come with your challenges, and we will be ready to work with industries in finding solutions.

“We are already working with quite a number of the industries – the Air Force, and Aviation .

“I want to say that any country that does not develop its own human capital through its university system will not go anywhere,’’ she said.

Ogunsola said that already, the university had concluded plans to set up a programme that would enable students of the university graduate with Certificate in Entrepreneurship.

She explained that the idea of the institution’s Skills centre was not basically about the acquisition of vocational skills but majorly about the students being able to apply their minds to solving problems.

Ogunsola said it was about thinking and doing things differently.

She said that the centre was focused in teaching the skills of creative thinking, connecting dots and solving problems.

Ogunsola, however, identified energy and funding as major challenges affecting the progress of work in the skill centre.

“We discover that these two are the factors we have to deal with. So, we have been trying to find ways to go around them, through collaboration with international partners, industries and others,’’ she said.

Dr Sunday Adebisi, acting Director of the Entrepreneurship and Skills Development Centre, noted that the second level pitching had attracted investors already, who had come to take a look at some of the new products if they could invest in them.

According to him, aside showing interest in the products, the investors will also critic the prototypes and advice on how to move them to the next level.

Adebisi said that the university would intensify efforts in producing graduates with a difference, with valid business ideas that could sell as well as create jobs for Nigerians.

“When you look at the crime rate in the country today, you will discover that most of the people kidnapping are graduates who are savy and solid in their brains and these people do this because they are frustrated and cannot secure jobs.

“So, what we are trying to do with our students here in UNILAG is to put their brains in perfect functionality and get them to begin to create business and ideas so that when they graduate, they get very engaged with what they are doing,’’ Adebisi, also an Associate Professor said.

Earlier, the Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, said that there was no going back on management’s plan in making the university, the number one entrepreneurship hub of the nation. (NAN)

  • Yuletide: Air Travelers lament fare hike

    Fare
    By Sumaila Ogbaje
ABUJA, Dec. 22, 2018 (NAN) Air travelers at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja have lamented the hike in price of air tickets by airlines ahead of the Christmas celebration.

Some of the travelers who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) said they were not surprised because they knew it had always been the case during yuletide seasons.

Mr Obiora Okeke, a businessman, said he was not surprised that flight ticket prices have soared considering the antecedents of airlines during festive periods.

Okeke said the issue of fare hike would not stop unless alternative means of transport like modern train services and good roads were provided.

He also attributed the hike to the absence of efficient and viable domestic airlines in the country, adding that the airlines were struggling to survive.

“It is not surprising that we are paying higher fare this time because it has been the case in Nigeria during festive periods because the same thing happens even in road transport sector.

“The only way out is that government should continue with rail projects to provide alternative means of transportation for people.

“Aside that, we don’t have many viable domestic airlines in Nigeria and the few we have are struggling to survive,” he said.

Another traveler, Mrs Asabe Musa, said the airlines were taking undue advantage of people’s fears of road travels due to insecurity and bad roads.

Musa called on the government to do more to tackle security challenges that has made roads dangerous for the public in many parts of the country.

She also urged the government to pay more attention to railway to make it easy for people to travel.

NAN reports that the air fare has gone up by almost double of all the prices about few weeks ago.

Air fare on these routes charged by various airlines before now ranges from N19,000 to N41,000 depending on the airline and time of booking.

A check by NAN on the price list of the various airlines revealed that they now charge between N36,000 and N70,000 on economy and N70,000 to N90,000 on business class depending on the time and destination.

For Air Peace, its tickets were sold between N42,600 and N70,000 on Abuja-Lagos route as at Saturday and in spite of the high price of ticket, only its evening flight had some available seats as at Saturday morning.

Arik sold its ticket ranging from N35,000 to NN46,000 on all routes while Max Air tickets sold for between N40,000 and N70,000 on Lagos-Abuja route, N30,000 to N60,000 for Abuja-Kano route and N65,000 on Abuja-Port Harcourt route.

Other airlines like Aero Contractors, Dana Air, Medview sold their tickets between N44,188 to N52,000; N34,200 to N79,200 and N33,748 to N54,646 respectively. (NAN)

  • Aubameyang brace gives Arsenal win over Burnley

    EPL

London, Dec. 22, 2018 (Reuters/NAN) Arsenal forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang shot to the top of the Premier League scoring charts with two goals in Saturday’s 3-1 home win over struggling Burnley.

The victory returns Arsenal to winning ways after two straight defeats.

The Gabon forward gave Arsenal the lead in the 14th minute, knocking in a pass from Sead Kolasinac after a classy ball from Mesut Ozil.

He then smashed high into the net in the 48th to complete an impressive counter-attack from Unai Emery’s side.

Burnley, 18th in the table and without an away win since September, hit back with a scrappy goal from Ashley Barnes.

Barnes had spurned a good chance to take an unlikely lead at the start of the game when Ashley Westwood was denied by the feet of Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno.

Substitute Alex Iwobi restored Arsenal’s two-goal cushion with a simple finish in stoppage-time, helped by another clever move from German playmaker Ozil.

Ozil, Arsenal’s captain for the day, was left out of the team for Wednesday’s 2-0 League Cup defeat by Tottenham Hotspur.

Aubameyang’s brace moved him on to 12 goals for the season, leapfrogging Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah as the league’s top scorer.

His goals also take fifth-placed Arsenal on to 37 points, level with Chelsea who play Leicester City later.

Arsenal’s 22-game unbeaten run in all competitions was halted on Sunday with a 3-2 defeat at Southampton.

They were also knocked out of the League Cup at the quarter-final stage with a painful home loss to north London neighbours Tottenham. (Reuters/NAN)

  • Follow up outstanding athletes identified at 19th National Sports Festival- IOC Taekwondo Referee

    Festival

    By Millicent Ifeanyichukwu

Lagos, Dec. 22, 2018 (NAN) Ibrahim Yahuza, International Olympic Committee (IOC) Referee, has called for follow up programmes, under the supervision of current coaches, for outstanding athletes identified at the 19th National Sports Festival.

Yahuza told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday that the identified athletes performed creditably and need trendy coaches to train them in line with the current competition rules of the sport.

“I carefully observed performances of athletes in the festival and I was impressed with skills exhibited by most athletes, and I believe that talents were equally identified by federation.

“The follow up programme to bring these potential to limelight is very fundamental and requires supervision of competent technical officials that regularly update their coaching skill according to the international standard.

“The athletes will be more encouraged if the federation can provide such needed platform which is required to develop their careers and in return be knowledgeable on competition rules,” he said.

The Kano-based practitioner said that there was need for the Nigeria Taekwondo Federation (NTF) to consider the recommendations in its programme of activities in 2019, make it a priority and ensure it was realised.

He said that the federation must take the right step in the right direction and expose athletes to competitions as part of preparation for 2019 series of championships.

The referee listed some international events billed for 2019 as World Cadet Taekwondo Championships, Moscow World Taekwondo Championships, World Cadet Grand-Pix Championships.

“The NTF must be up and doing in exposure activities and close that gap that have kept our athletes behind which their peers are using against them in various tournaments.

“The fighting standard is equally applied in all competition but the difference between our athletes and foreigner peers is their high level of exposure and regular participation in tournaments,” Yahuza added.

He, however, appealed to the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports to provided necessary support needed for the federation to prepare and ensure the participation of its athletes in the tournaments.

NAN reports that 460 taekwondo athletes feature in Kyorugi and Poomsae events at the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development organised 19th NSF held in Abuja from Dec. 6 to Dec.16. (NAN)

  • FAAN aviation security personnel slumps, dies at Lagos airport

    Personnel

    By Solomon Asowata

Lagos, Dec. 22, 2018 (NAN) A Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) security personnel, Mr Usman Mohammed, on Friday slumped and died while on duty at the General Aviation Terminal (GAT) of the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos.

Mr Olayinka Abioye, immediate past General Secretary, National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE), confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Lagos.

Abioye said :” The deceased was a former executive member of NUATE, FAAN branch.

“We learnt he was on duty yesterday when he suddenly collapsed and died before receiving medical attention.”

He said the deceased, who is survived by a wife and five children, had been buried according to Islamic rites.

Abioye described Mohammed’s demise as unfortunate, stressing that the FAAN management must give priority and urgent attention to the well being of workers.

According to him, some aviation security staff are being made to work more than the required eight hours per day without rest periods or compensation.

“It is said that some of them work for 12 hours at a stretch without break simply because the Directorate of Aviation Security is suffering from dearth of adequate manpower,” he alleged.

Abioye said although FAAN had been carrying out recruitments from time to time, such exercises were not on need basis as expected but on political expediency.

He said aviation security, which operates under Section 17 of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) convention, was critical to airport operations and must be adequately staffed.

Abioye, therefore, urged FAAN management to deploy more personnel to the directorate and also provide adequate medical facilities at the airport to prevent recurrence of such incident. (NAN)

  • Lagos governorship candidate urges FG to reconsider pipelines surveillance contracts

    Surveillance
    By Chioma Ugboma

Lagos, Dec. 22, 2018 (NAN) Mr Babatunde Gbadamosi, an Action Democratic Party (ADP) governorship candidate in Lagos State, has urged the Federal Government to reconsider approval for petroleum pipeline routes surveillance across the country.

Gbadamosi, a real estate developer, also “BOG”, made the plea on Saturday when he revisited victims of the Abule Egba area of Lagos pipelines explosion to redeem his pledge of assistance to them.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the candidate handed over relief materials, including food stuff and other items to leaders of the victims for distribution.

NAN also reports that the explosion occurred on Wednesday when oil spilled from a fuel tanker siphoning petrol from a vandalised pipeline suddenly burst into flames, razing several houses and vehicles.

The ADP candidate also urged the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) to work in tandem with the government to ensure that best hands were given such contracts.

He said that this would forestall continued vandalism and ensure adequate protection of the pipelines.

NAN recalls that Federal Government had in 2015, directed the ex-militants led by Government Ekpemupolo (aka Tompolo), Mujaheedin Asari-Dokubo and Chief Bipobiri Ajube, to take over surveillance of the Nigerian waterways and oil pipelines.

Also, the late Dr Frederick Fasheun, Founder of the Oodua Peoples Congress, and Aare Gani Adams, were also beneficiaries of the surveillance when it was taken over from the police and the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) on March 16, 2015.

Gbadamosi, however, said that all the existing surveillance contracts of pipelines must be reviewed and new ones considered to ensure adequate protection of the nation’s pipelines and forestall future reccurrence.

“In 2006, almost 300 people lost their lives in a pipeline explosion in the Abule Egba area and its environs.

“This is in addition to other pipelines explosions in Lagos and Ogun where lives and property were lost, not to mention the huge revenue loss to the country.

“Government must ensure that companies or individuals who handle the surveillance are capable to withstand the syndicates that are involved in the vadalism.

“Pipelines vandalism syndicates are not people that anyone can toy with. They must be matched with the same level of intelligence that they use in perpetrating the crime.

“Individuals, groups or companies condidered for such projects must be steps ahead of the syndidates and with the muscle to tackle them, ” he said.

The ADP candidate called for stiffer penalties for anyone or group caught to serve as deterrent to others.

He reiterated calls to residents near the pipelines’ routes to work with the government and security agencies in providing information on suspicious activities around the routes. (NAN)
