    Teachers
    By Chidinma Ewunonu-Aluko
Ibadan, Dec. 22, 2018 (NAN) Dr Bisi Akin-Alabi, the Special Adviser on Education to the Oyo State Governor,  on Saturday described teachers as role models, miracle workers and nation builders.

Akin-Alabi said this at the 2018 valedictory service for graduates of the Bachelors Degree Programme of the Ibadan Study Centre of the National Teachers Institute (NTI) Kaduna.

The programme held at the Federal College of Agriculture, Ibadan.

“Teachers are very important in every nation, they are role models and should view themselves as such.

“ If teachers stand at their duty post, there will be positive changes in our landscape.

“Teachers should always be responsible and take their vocation seriously.

“Therefore,  I urge you to be proud in your profession and develop yourself.

“Your career is a rewarding one if you know what you are doing, if we teachers take our jobs seriously, our lives, that of the students and country will be better,” she said.

Also speaking, the NTI  Coordinator in the state, Dr Bosede Oyinlola, enjoined the graduates to pursue postgraduate studies in other to boost their career.

“We assure you that by January your scripts will be marked so that your results will not be delayed and it will not be a hindrance for you to move forward in your academic pursuit.

“Always be good ambassadors of the institute, I assure you that the sky will always be your starting point.

“We, however, thank God for the success and completion of your programme,” she said.

Earlier, the Centre’s Manager, Dr Ronke Ojo, said the institute has challenges such as insufficient classrooms and administrative offices.

Ojo, however,  commended the Federal Government for setting up the institute, saying it was an avenue for producing standard teachers in the country.

She called for regularity in the payment of salaries, saying many students often complain of inability to pay school fees.

“The Federal Government should ensure that state governments pay workers’ salary promptly.

“The government will do well if they allow the institute to have separate payment portal that will not clash with the Treasury Single Account.

“As election is on the way, I appeal to the incoming administration to put education first because no nation can rise above its education.

“We need total overhauling of the country’s curriculum so that it is fashioned around our needs and not adopting the same colonial curriculum of the 1850s,” she added. (NAN)

It left Pep Guardiola’s champions trailing leaders Liverpool by four points.

But Jeffrey Schlupp brought Palace level with a low diagonal shot into the bottom corner and Andros Townsend stunned the Etihad Stadium with a sensational volley.

Crystal Palace went 3-1 up through a Luka Milivojevic penalty kick in the 51st minute, after Kyle Walker brought down Max Meyer inside the box.

Guardiola brought on substitutes Sergio Aguero and Kevin De Bruyne and it was the Belgian midfielder who gave the home side hope with a cross-shot in the 85th minute.

Gabriel Jesus missed a stoppage-time chance when he headed over a De Bruyne cross from a promising position.

It was their first home league loss since the Manchester derby on April 7.

“Omu-Aran has a threshold population that can support the provision of specialised services like university, specialist hospital, ultra-modern markets and fire services stations, among others, ‘’ Adeoti said.

Gov. Ahmed expressed optimism that the new monarch would bring to bear his vast knowledge and experience in the areas of administration toward the growth, progress and development of the community.

He advised the Olomu to be guided by the spirit of tolerance, togetherness and excellence in the discharge of his traditional responsibilities of putting resources together for desired development.

  • Dalung says Sports Ministry will give more support to Nigeria Hockey Federation

    Hockey

    By Kelechi Ogunleye

Abuja, Dec. 22, 2018 (NAN) Solomon Dalung, Minister of Youths and Sports Development, has pledged his ministry’s full support to the Nigeria Hockey Federation (NHF) in improving the hockey sport in Nigeria and Africa.

Dalung, who was represented by Olusade Adesola, the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, however commended the present board of the federation.

“I must commend the President and the NHF board members because they have been making sacrifices, in the area of finances, manpower and the way they run around. Their commitment is what has brought success so far.

“We will make effort to support the federation in terms of getting a technical manager and also look into improving the turfs.

“We will do our best to support hockey with all we can and we are pleading with the African Hockey Federation (Afhf) to give us another chance to host a tournament,” he said.

Responding, Simon Nkom, the Acting President of NHF, thanked the ministry for its support towards the success of the hosting of the 2018 edition of the Africa Cup for Club Champions (ACCC).

“We want to also appreciate the minister and the ministry for coming in at the nick of time to save us from what would have been absolutely not a good name.
“Without mincing words, the success of this tournament belongs to the ministry and we want to say ‘a very big thank you’ for coming in at the nick of time.”
He urged the ministry to help the federation get new turfs to resurface the Abuja National Stadium astro-turf pitch, as well as equipment to help develop the national teams.
Nkom added that NHF also needed a technical manager who would help the teams prepare for international tournaments, particularly the Tokyo Olympics qualifying events in 2019.

“Even though we have one of the best facilities in Africa, we still need the support of the ministry in getting a technical manager who will help groom our young talents and prepare us for international tournaments.

“We want the ministry to come to our aid in terms of equipment and most importantly to help us change the surfaces on our pitches so that the beautiful edifice will be able to meet international standard and also be kept in a good shape.”

Seif Ahmed, the President of Afhf, also commended the present NHF administration for its role in the resurgence of Nigerian hockey and called on the government to come to the Federation’s aid.

“I will like to thank the existing board who changed the idea we have in our mind about Nigerian hockey, because in the past it is either they come after the tournament starts or pull out in the last minute and make a mess of the tournament.

” But that has changed, and now I am  calling on the government to help the federation.

“I am really impressed with the pitch I saw during this competition, because in 2003 I was here and to see the pitch in good condition is really impressive.

“But the pitch and stadium needs maintenance and upgrade.

“We want the government to help the federation get new turfs on the pitches because we want Nigeria to host international tournaments. But these turfs can only host the junior championships.

“The current turfs need to be changed so you can host the international tournaments and improve on your game, because if you don’t play against stronger teams you can’t improve or learn.

“Also, as we prepare for Tokyo 2020 I hope you will send your teams — men and wowomen —- to South Africa for the qualifiers in August next year.

” And, it is not just about sending the teams to participate but to come and perform,” he said.

Ahmed added that the Nigerian federation needed to be assisted to prepare early and prepare well in order to perform well.(NAN)
