A statement issued on Saturday in Enugu by the command’s spokesman, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, said men from the Awkunanaw Police Division recovered the gun on May 29.

Ndukwe said that the operatives responded to a distress call of a robbery in a compound at Awkunanaw, Enugu, at 10.00p.m. and foiled the attack.

According to him, the police team recovered a locally fabricated double barrel gun with two live catridges dropped by one of the fleeing  robbers.

The statement further said that detectives from the Awkunanaw Police Division on May 30, at 7:30p.m., also arrested three suspects allegedly connected to theft of iron rails.

He said that discreet investigation was ongoing to arrest other members of the gang, adding that the suspects would be prosecuted once investigations were concluded.

Ndukwe quoted the Commissioner of Police, Mr Kanayo Uzuegbu, as appreciating residents of the state whose information on activities  of criminals made the arrests possible.

Uzuegbu tasked the residents to continue to support the police by promptly reporting suspected criminals and their activities to the police and other security agencies. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

  • LASPA to hospitality sector: Comply with Lagos Parking Policy

LASPA to hospitality sector: Comply with Lagos Parking Policy

    Parking

    By Chiazo Ogbolu

Lagos, June 1, 2024 (NAN) The Lagos State Parking Authority (LASPA) has urged stakeholders in the hospitality industry to comply with Lagos state parking policy.

It called on those in the industry to make adequate arrangements to meet customers’ parking needs.

The General Manager, LASPA, Mrs Adebisi Adelabu, said these in a statement on Saturday, in Lagos.

Adelabu said it was the duty of those who own and operate facilities such as hotels, bars and events centres to make adequate parking provision for their customers/clients.

“If you have an event centre, hotel or restaurant, ideally, you should make sure you have enough parking,” she said.

The LASPA general manager said that the authority was not quick to take punitive measures, but rather sought voluntary compliance.

“The authority usually explores all available options to sensitise the public before commencement of any enforcement exercise.

“We, as an agency, are not here to disrupt your businesss; what we ask is that you don’t make your businesses an infringement to the rights of others, ensure you comply with the dictates of the parking policy,” she said.

Adelabu urged event centres to ensure ample parking provision for their guests right from the outset of constructing their facilities.

She emphasised that according to the law, anyone planning to build a structure for social gatherings must conduct a traffic impact assessment prior to construction, and the approved designs must be strictly followed.

She also assured some event centres and corporate entities grappling with inadequate parking spaces of the authority’s preparedness to assist them in establishing alternative arrangements whenever necessary.

Adelabu affirmed that Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration was making significant investments in an intermodal transport system to reduce reliance on car travel.

“Lagos residents now have access to trains and boats as well as options like LAGRIDE or the first and last mile buses to complete their journeys,” she said.

The LASPA boss appealed to corporate entities, car park operators and others in the sector on timely payment of their rates, to avoid enforcement measures.

She also called on Lagos residents to cooperate with LASPA to keep the roads clear of illegal parking, urging anyone with parking related issues to contact the agency. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

  • Hajj: NAHCON tasks pilgrims on use of NUSUK card

    Card

    By Salisu Sani-Idris

Abuja, June 1, 2024 (NAN) The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) has urged pilgrims to ensure the use of NUSUK card ( identification and access card) to avoid being arrested by the Saudi  Arabian Authority.

Its Executive Chairman, Malam Jalal Arabi, made the call in a statement by the commission’s Assistant Director, Public Affairs, Mrs Fatima Sanda-Usara, on Saturday in Abuja.

She said, ” The commission wishes to address the recent concerns and complaints regarding pilgrims being arrested or prevented from accessing the Masjidul Haram in Makkah for not being in possession of their NUSUK ID cards.

” NAHCON had at different fora with State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Boards and Hajj Tour Operators in Nigeria before the commencement of transportation of pilgrims stressed the importance of the card.

” The card is a crucial document required for identification and access to the masha’er during the hajj exercise.

” The highest religious body of Saudi Arabia has issued a fatwa in this regard making it mandatory for every pilgrim to obtain a Hajj permit for the wellbeing of all.”

Snda-Usara quoted Arabi as reminding all the Nigerian pilgrims of the mandatory possession of Nusuk ID cards, adding that all the pilgrims must collect their cards on arrival in Makkah from officials at designated distribution points.

He said that pilgrims could inquire about collection procedures from the State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Boards or Tour Operators they registered with.

Arabi said, ” It is imperative to always carry these cards, as they are the recognised means of identifying pilgrims and for having access to key areas during hajj.

” Pilgrims with smartphones can download the card app from play store or itunes stores. They can use their passport and visa numbers to activate and access digital copies of their cards.”

He enjoined pilgrims to be vigilant and aware of the presence of illegal pilgrims attempting to steal and use the cards to gain access to the Masha’er.

The chairman added, ” Guard your cards carefully and report any suspicious activity to the nearest authorities.”

He also urged all State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Boards and Tour Operators to emphasise the importance of the cards to registered pilgrims during their pre-departure briefings and periodic engagements with pilgrims.

” Assist pilgrims in collecting their NUSUK cards if needed and Liaise with their respective field offices for this purpose.

” There are severe penalties for anyone caught performing or aiding others to perform hajj illegally. The penalties include a fine of 10,000 Saudi Riyals.

” Six months imprisonment, immediate deportation and banning from Saudi Arabia for 10 years.

” We understand that some pilgrims may have misplaced their NUSUK cards. In such cases, pilgrims should contact their respective state pilgrims’ officials or NAHCON’s operational office in Makkah for assistance,” he said.

Arabi urged all the pilgrims to adhere strictly to the guidelines to avoid any inconvenience or disruption in their spiritual journey.

Similarly, he warned them against harbouring or aiding any illegal pilgrim, reiterating that NAHCON was committed to ensuring a smooth and safe hajj experience for all Nigerian pilgrims. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

  • Stakeholders say Gov. Abiodun needs to do more on healthcare

    Health
    By Yetunde Fatungase
Abeokuta, June 1, 2024 (NAN) Stakeholders in the health sector in Ogun say Gov. Dapo Abiodun’s administration needs to do more regarding its policies and programmes in the sector after one year of re-election.
Chairman, Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), Ogun chapter, Dr Kunle Ashimi, while commending the state government’s efforts in strengthening the healthcare system, said there was still room for more.
“I am concerned that the steps taken, particularly within the period under review, are grossly inadequate to address the myriad of challenges facing the sector,” he told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
The Ogun NMA Chairman lamented gross manpower shortage in most of the health facilities, occasioned by massive exodus of health workers for greener pastures on a daily basis.
Ashimi urged the state government to fill the gaps as a matter of urgency by implementing the revised CONMESS salary structure in order to attract and retain doctors.
“Ogun needs to fill these gaps as a matter of urgency, because of the stress on the available doctors and the consequences of doctors’ fatigue.
“The few doctors available, for example, have not been responding favorably to job advertisements by the state because the Ogun government is yet to implement the reviewed CONMESS salary structure.
“To reverse this trend, the Ogun government must urgently implement the revised CONMESS in order to attract and retain doctors.”
He added that the cost of medication had skyrocketed, as well as consumables and the cost of investigations.
“The people also need to practice preventive medicine as well as embrace health insurance to reduce the burden of out-of-pocket healthcare spendings,” Ashimi stated.
The state’s Commissioner for Health, Dr. Tomi Coker, however told NAN that government had continued to revitalise the health sector by renovating more Primary Health Care (PHC) facilities across the state.
According to  Coker, government had renovated no fewer than 100 primary health centres (PHCs) and was still committed to renovating the remaining ones before the end of the administration’s tenure.
“The PHCs remain the pillar of quality, affordable and accessible healthcare services, hence our focus on the renovation and upgrade of the facilities,” she said.
Coker added that the present administration also recently launched the informal sector insurance scheme and was hoping to launch the one for the formal sector soon.
“This will cover the civil servants and the organised labour,” she said.
The Commissioner disclosed that the state had been able to register no fewer than 150,000 persons under the informal sector insurance scheme and was hoping to increase the number with time.
She added that the government had continued to invest in quality database technology for the enhancement of improved quality healthcare delivery.
“Some of the secondary and tertiary health facilities in the state now run on electronic medical records.
“If you go to a place like Ijaiye State Hospital, the entire system is now electronic and we hope to scale up to other general hospitals.
“All the state hospitals have 100 percent deployment of electronic health records and the Olabisi Onabanjo University teaching hospital too has 75 percent deployment as we speak,” Coker said.
The commissioner disclosed also that the state had recently collaborated with Global Funds, a private firm, to put up the largest Pharmagrade Warehouse in Nigeria within the state.
She said the facility was scheduled to begin operations on July 1.
Coker added that the state governor has been “magnanimous enough” to give 12 percent of the state’s entire budget to health sector out of the 15 percent Abuja declaration.
On future plans, Coker explained that the government would continue to improve on its ambulance services.
“Having started with 80 tricycle ambulances during the first term, we intend to provide more and also but include basic life support ambulances in this second term.
“This will translate to less waiting time for  ambulances to arrive at the scene of an accident or emergency,” she said.

Some patients at the State Hospital at Ijaiye in Abeokuta also attested to some of the achievements listed by the commissioner.

They, however, pointed out that more still needed  to be done to achieve an efficient and error-proof database technology system.
Kafilat Omiyera, an outpatient, told NAN that there were often errors in the database as they had to contend with the correct dates of appointments.
“Sometimes when I visit, they check my name on the system and the date of my last appointment may not relate with my next one.
“This sometimes generate confusion, which often results in delay in getting attended to by the doctor,” she said.
Another patient, Mrs Shola Madebo, commended the state government for the health insurance scheme but claimed that some health workers had continually hindered prompt access to medical treatment.
“This is because we are not paying much”.
Mr Tuoyo Jeremiah, also a patient at the State Hospital, lamented the shortage of medical workers, saying the few ones available were often under too much pressure.
He noted that such medical workers often show signs of fatigue after long hours of work.
“The situation often  affect their ability to cope with work, thereby causing some of them to be ‘cranky’ and rude to patients, ” Jeremiah said.
