NAGAFF creates customs cargo facilitation group
Establishment
By Aisha Cole
Lagos, June 1, 2024 (NAN) The National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders (NAGAFF) says it has created a technical cargo and customs facilitation group to undertake multi-modal transport system for its members.
In a statement on Saturday in Lagos, NAGAFF Founder, Dr Boniface Aniebonam, said that creation of the group followed complaints by its members and shippers in Kano and Kaduna states, as well as Abuja.
“They specifically complained about the inherent problems associated with taking delivery of cargo from the mother ports of the South West and South East to the northern part of the country,” he said.
Aniebonam said that the members and shippers cited insecurity, bad roads and high cost of doing business.
He said that the group would come on stream in northern Nigeria to ensure customs trade facilitation.
According to Aniebonam, NAGAFF decided to set up the group to engage agents in ensuring smooth facilitation of cargo logistics for its members and shippers.
Aniebonam said that the primary responsibility of the group would be to interface with the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA), Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC) and other relevant agencies of the government in that regard.
He said that the group would be expected to link up with trade groups involved in import and export trades in northern Nigeria and avail them the opportunities provided at inland container terminals within the northern metropolis.
“The good news is the emergence of DALA Inland Dry Port, the most modern inland container terminal springing up in Kano State.
“The group is doing everything possible to make importers and exporters within the northern metropolis to become competitive in their businesses.
“This means that every importer and exporter of the northern extraction may not bother to come to Lagos or any of the mother ports in the south to take delivery or export their cargos.
“Aside from reduction of cost, the safety of cargo and efficient time of doing business are guaranteed,” he said.
Aniebonam listed some of the technical group members as Chief Patrick Ogbo, Chairman; Dr Arthor Igwilo, Technical Head; and Alhaji Muftau, Northern Zonal Chairman.
He praised the managements of the NRC, NPA and NCS for ensuring that the Kano inland container terminal received the first batch of containers through rail transport on May 31.
He urged port operators to support President Bola Tinubu’s administration in actualising its Renewed Hope Agenda. (NAN).

Tinubu has never influenced electoral process, Vice-President Shettima says
Influence
By Mujidat Oyewole
Ilorin, June 1, 2024 (NAN) Vice-President Kashim Shettima on Saturday in Ilorin said the present administration led by President Bola Tinubu has never influenced the electoral process.Shettima, while speaking during the 30th anniversary of Prof. Yusuf Ali’s Ghalib Chambers, explained why President Tinubu decided to steer clear of the electoral process.
He said this was because of Tinubu’s belief in political freedom, fair play and justice.
“President Tinubu never influenced electoral process and we (at the Presidency) never used instruments of office to haunt or hound perceived opponents,” the Vice-President said.
Shettima said democracy can only survive by adherence to the rule of law and quality of governance, not necessarily by system of government.
The Guest Speaker of the occasion, Mr Babatunde Fashola, noted that the call in some quarters for the reintroduction of parliamentary system of government might be wrong.
Fashola, a former Minister of Works and Housing, advised those calling for the reintroduction to deeply think.
”They should reflect on whether the reasons which caused its collapse in the First Republic had been sorted out or not.”
He submitted that only quality governance would shape the society, not the system of government.
“Nigeria once practised this parliamentary system, but it failed and led the country into unwarranted disaster.
“Let us think deeply on why the parliamentary system failed us and ask ourselves if we have overcome those reasons,” Fashola said.
The guest speaker suggested liberal democracy that would ensure better and improved livelihood of Nigerians, rather than calling for a change of system of government.
Fashola commended the celebrant, Yusuf Ali who is a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), for his robust contribution to the nation’s legal system.
Earlier, the Founder of Ghalib Chambers, Ali had thanked God for all he achieved, saying “my heart is full of gratitude, humility and deepest appreciation to Almighty Allah who is the Creator and the Divine Architect.
“As I reflect on the journey, I am reminded of the countless times Allah intervened, guided, and blessed me, even when all hope seemed lost.”
Ali thanked his parents, teachers, clients and those who shared their wisdom and expertise with him, regardless of the setting or circumstance, his siblings, children and his late wife.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that many dignitaries graced the occasion, including the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola.
The list of dignitaries in attendance also had the Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, and the Founder of Al-Hikma University, Ilorin, Abdulraheem Oladimeji.
NAN reports that the Ghalib Chambers compiled a compendium of over 450 pages, launched by Vice-President Shettima, as part of the anniversary and contribution to the legal and general community.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Archbishop Martins clocks 65, counsels nation’s leaders, followers
Leadership
By Uchenna Eletuo
Lagos, June 1, 2024 (NAN) The Catholic Archbishop of Lagos, Most. Rev. Adewale Martins, on Saturday clocked 65, with a call on Nigerians to demand better governance from their leaders.
Martins, at media conference to commemorate the anniversary in Lagos, said that such action was necessary to ensure quality service.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Martins, at the conference, held at the Holy Cross Cathedral focused on the state of the nation.
He said that leaders have an obligation to give the people quality representation that would have positive bearing on the people.
The archbishop said that the best of polices should be implemented to give succour to the people.
According to him, the present administration since inception has instituted various policies: some laudable, but some with negative bearing on the life of the people.
“The manner and timing of the removal of the petroleum subsidy has adversely affected the life of the common man with its attendant high cost of staple foods, transport fare and poor medication because of increase in pharmaceutical products.
“The multiple taxes question the sensitivity of government toward the hunger the people are faced with.
“For the government to continue to ask people to sacrifice for a better tomorrow, the government should be seen to do likewise by cutting down the cost of running government, without which the government will be portrayed in a bad light.”
He urged the government to make drugs cheap by reduction of taxes to firms, noting that many of them were relocating to neighbouring countries because of high cost of doing business.
“Ensure constant electricity power supply to encourage small and medium enterprises to function for many idle youths to be employed,” he also advised government.
Martins regretted the mass failure in the last Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, but noted that most candidates from Catholic schools, from his inquiry, scored above 200 marks.
He said that more funding was needed in the education sector to improve teaching and learning outcomes.
The archbishop called on the government to implement people-oriented policies that would not be too difficult for the populace to bear.
He also urged Nigerians to make their leaders accountable.
Martins thanked God for the gift of life and His direction in the leadership of the church.
Some Christian faithful, in an expression of joy for the archbishop’s milestone of 65 years, presented him with gifts.(NAN)

He said that according to the Central Bank of Nigeria, Nigeria spends 1.5 billion dollars per annum to import dairy products.
“This is because of our production deficit which stood at nearly 60 per cent as Nigerians consumed an average of 1.6 billion litres of milk and its products.
“The passionate dream of President Bola Tinubu is for us to attain national production security to even lead to export of dairy products to African countries under the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA).
“It is in pursuance of this priority plan that speedy actions to transform the Livestock Sector especially the dairy value chain towards attaining food and nutrition security becomes not only imperative but an urgent national duty,” he said.

LASG hands over police station in Epe
LASG hands over police station in Epe

At the handing over of newly built Epe Marine Police Station Division Handing over
By Aderonke Ojediran
Lagos, June 1, 2024 (NAN) The Lagos State Government (LASG) on Saturday handed over a police station it constructed to the Marina Division of the force in Epe.
The News Agency of Nigeria(NAN)reports the old police station is to be demolished by the state government to pave the way for a road project in the local government area.
Speaking at the handing over ceremony , Special Adviser to Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Infrastructure, Mr Olufemi Daramola, said the planned demolition of the old station and construction of a new one was to enable government promptly deliver the expansion of Awolowo Way-Ita Marina road project.
Daramola, represented by a Permanent Secretary, Mr Ayodele Somide, said the old police station was marked for demolition because it was standing in the way of the ongoing project.
Daramola said that the expansion of segment five of the project required redesign of the existing vertical and horizontal curves on the road alignment.
This, according to him, necessitated the relocation of the existing Epe Marina Police post and some other structures on the new road alignment.
“Taking into cognisance the security implications, a new Marina Police Post had to be built to accommodate police officers .
“This is the only outstanding challenge to the full completion of the rehabilitation/upgrade of the strategic arterial/inner roads (Phase II) in Epe L.G.A, which is currently at 95 per cent completion”,he said.
He said the expansion of the road and other inner city roads in the town had become inevitable to eliminate potential gridlock and reduce travel time through improved road connectivity.
He said government was improving road infrastructure in the area because “Epe and its environs are presently witnessing an influx of people and increased traffic volume as a result of industrial and commercial growth arising from the development of the Dangote Oil Refinery, Air and Sea ports as well as industries within the Lekki Free Trade Zone”
Speaking ,Mr Fady Bourjely, representative of Cranberg Construction Limited, the contractor handling the road project ,said the new police station was built by government because the old one was delaying the execution of the road project.
“The implication is that we can continue the work. What is holding us back now is for the officers to shift to the new building so we can continue as fast as possible.
” The project is now just with the demolition of the old police station which will take place June 5 so we can commence work, by August we should be done.
” Although it depends on the weather because now we are in the rainy season. It may have some delay time because of the weather,” Bourjely said.
A representative of the police , SP Richard Ekemerusu, commended the state government on the new station.
“One thing about the structure is that even though it is close to the river, water can never wash it away.
“There are boulders, which are big rocks arranged around the structure, preventing erosion from washing it away.
“The former structure that we were using was old , not befitting the status of the Police.
“But the present one is a very beautiful one, the one that will actually help us to perform our duties well.
” There are a lot of things there. You have the security cameras.Inside, the personnel that are working can see far away from where the structure is located and criminals can be sighted far away.
“With the CCTV camera, we are going to perform. We are performing very well, but this one is going to improve our performance, and we are going to make the citizens happy because our job is to protect lives and property of residents,” he said.
NAN reports that the government also handed over a 12 -room bungalow to the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS) in Badagry.
Daramola said that the 12 -room bungalow would facilitate the delivery of the ongoing Hospital Road project (Phase 1), in the area.
NAN reports the old NCoS staff quarters were on the Right of Way of the Hospital Road project (Phase 1), a strategic road that transverses Idale, Akarakunmoh, Povita, Topo and Ajido communities to the Lagos-Badagry Expressway via Joseph Dosu Road.
” The result is a sleek and functional living space that prioritises the well-being and comfort of the NCoS staff.
” The project reached its fruition after the tireless efforts, of the project team from the office of Infrastructure and the Staff of the NCoS which culminated in the official handing over.
“Also the handing over of the quarters would make room for the completion of Hospital Road, which is currently 80 per cent completed”,he said
Speaking at the handing over ceremony ,Controller of Corrections, State Headquarters, NCoS. Mr B. R. Freedman, he appreciated the LASG, for the expeditious reconstruction and handing over of the staff quarters
He said that the reconstructed staff quarters were delivered with a generator to ensure uninterrupted power supply, adding it would enable NCoS staff to carry out their tasks efficiently.

National Security: Keeping the promise in one year of Renewed Hope
By Kayode Adebiyi, News Agency of Nigeria (NAN)
As President Bola Tinubu’s administration clocks one year, one of the promises he made during the campaigns before his election was to tackle insecurity headlong.During his inauguration on May 29, 2023, the president promised to prioritise security, saying neither prosperity nor justice could prevail amidst insecurity.
“To effectively tackle this menace, we shall reform both our security doctrine and its architecture.
“We shall invest more in our security personnel, and this means more than an increase in number. We shall provide better training, equipment, pay and firepower,” the president said.
According to security analysts, those promises were not just founded on emptiness, as they are captured in the president’s campaign manifesto dubbed the Renewed Hope Agenda.
The Renewed Hope agenda of the president on national security is hinged on three components: fighting terrorism and violent extremism, ending oil theft and illegal exploration of the country’s resources, and stamping out violent secessionist agitations.
The president acknowledged in that policy document that the fundamental responsibility of government is to protect the lives and property of its citizens.
He, therefore, promised to mobilise Nigeria’s national security, military and law enforcement assets to protect all Nigerians from danger and the fear of danger.
He also promised to expand and improve upon the use of technology, enhance recruitment of personnel, and bolster existing agencies and systems to achieve his fundamental national security goals.
What has been achieved in one year
In line with his promise to seek bilateral and multilateral cooperation, Nigeria hosted the second edition of the UK-Nigeria Security and Defence Partnership Dialogue, through the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA).
The event allowed Nigeria and the UK to reaffirm the two countries’ deep and long-standing security and defence relationship.
Nigeria also successfully hosted the High-Level Africa Counter-Terrorism Meeting, which brought together five Heads of Government, including the UN Deputy Secretary-General, and leaders of other key global bodies.
Those discussions focused on stability in the Sahel Region and garnered significant commitments to combat terrorism and violent extremism.
In the area of cybersecurity, which is a component of national security, ONSA organised sensitisation workshops across seven sectors.
The sectors are Telecommunications, defence and security, education, finance and capital market, energy, professional organisations, the private sector and judiciary.
The aim is to provide information, strengthen cybersecurity governance and coordination and build the capacity of relevant stakeholders on their responsibilities under the National Cybersecurity Policy and Strategy (NCPS).
Along the line of the provisions of the Renewed Hope Agenda, NSA Nuhu Ribadu also tackled three important national security threats – terrorism and violent extremism, oil theft and secessionist agitation.
During an inspection tour of oil and gas facilities in Abia and Rivers states Ribadu decried how the country was still losing 400,000 barrels of crude oil daily to local and international thieves.
According to the Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj.-Gen. Edward Buba, in the fight against oil theft, 1,437 perpetrators were apprehended, with 363 neutralised. Additionally, 245 kidnapped hostages were rescued, leading to a marked decrease in insurgent activities.
In less than a year, the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) puts Nigeria’s oil production at 1.28 million barrels per day (bpd), signifying a 4.07 per cent increase from the 1.23 million bpd recorded in March 2024 — also indicating the first month-on-month production growth in the year.
Under the Tinubu administration, the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) said its counter-terrorism and insurgency operations have led to the neutralisation of 9,303 insurgents, the arrest of 6,998 individuals, and the rescue of 4,641 hostages.
The MNJTF also said that 9,562 Boko Haram/ISWAP combatant fighters and their families surrendered to security forces.
Also, within a year, successful intelligence-led operations have prevented numerous terrorist attacks and criminal activities.
High-profile terrorist commanders and their associates were also said to be apprehended across multiple states, preventing potential catastrophic incidents.
Confiscations included illegal items such as IEDs, firearms, ammunition, and dangerous psychoactive substances.
Available media content shows that troops across various theatres of operations in the country in separate operations recovered over 21,000 pump action cartridges, 440 pump action rifles, and 228,741 rounds of ammunition within the past year, preventing potential attacks by recovering suicide jackets and lethal weapons.
On regional security and stability, President Tinubu, as the Chairman of the ECOWAS, emphasized the importance of regional and international cooperation to effectively combat money laundering, terrorist financing, and the financing of proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.
To this end, his government demonstrated the importance when the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (NCCSALW) retrieved 20,000 small arms and 60,000 units of ammunition in Nigeria.
Police reform is another area in which the administration has ticked the box.
As chair of the Nigeria Police Council (NPC), the president set up a constitutional review committee to carry out comprehensive police reforms.
The committee, among other tasks, was charged to assess the lapses in the 1999 Constitution that are holding back reforms of the Nigeria Police Force as well as enhance coordination and align technology and manpower resources towards strengthening the police.
As many public commentators have said, one year could be insufficient to analyse the performance of a government, especially one carrying out structural reforms.
However, when it comes to national security, there is a feeling that the administration of President Tinubu was already putting in place measures to sustain security of lives and property of all citizens. (NANFeatures)
