  • Men share coping with hormonal changes in pregnant wives

Men share coping with hormonal changes in pregnant wives

    Changes

    By Vivian Eze/Veronica Dariya

Abuja, June 16, 2024 (NAN) A cross section of men in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), have shared their experiences on how they coped with the hormonal changes in their wives during pregnancy.

The men spoke in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Abuja.

NAN reports that women experience significant hormonal changes during pregnancy to support the growth and development of the fetus and also to prepare the body for childbirth and motherhood.

NAN further reports that these changes can lead to various physical and emotional symptoms, such as mood swings, fatigue, morning sickness, weight gain, skin changes and unusual cravings.

The men, however, told NAN that these changes did not only affect the mother and child but also affected the people around them.

Mr Eunan Ubor, a father and resident of Karu, said the experience was an uneasy one for his family but they were able to cope with the behavioural changes in his pregnant wife.

He said that he had no option than to tolerate his wife’s anger as well as cope with her new likes and dislikes and always listened to her fears and anxiety during the period.

According to him, my wife’s life changed and so did mine; we both had to adjust to the situation that came with the pregnancy at the different stages.

“I had to hide my perfumes and deodorants because it irritated her and started using a particular soap that she liked, so she would not vomit.”

Ubor said that due to the high blood pressure his wife had during the pregnancy, which took them in and out of the hospital, he had to reschedule his closing time at work, to return to his pregnant wife.

This, he explained, was the routine for both of them until she delivered her baby.

He also said that his wife had series of weird nightmares and the fear of giving birth, which kept him awake and praying most nights.

“I had to bear with her and gave her all the support needed during the period, as we waited for the joy that comes after the pains.

“I salute women for all they have to go through to give birth; God has given them grace and all that men need to do, is to support them during this period,” Ubor said.

Similarly, Mr Leonard Ogbiabor, another father, said he has two children and the pregnancy journeys with his wife were worthwhile experience.

Ogbiabor said that during his wife’s first pregnancy, she had weird likeness for smells that were naturally offensive.

He said that she liked the smell of gutter and turned away from food because her taste bud changed, which made her craved for foods, different from what she normally liked.

“She began to develop mood swings; most times, she got angry with no provocation, the harmless jokes I make with her became offensive and this drained me too.

“She also became very weak and could barely take her bath without help; I had to do the house chores myself and still go to work.

”In fact, I had to adjust to a lot of things at that period,” he said.

Ogbiabor also said that although the period was a challenging one as he never blamed his wife for her actions at that time but did his best to support her patiently.

He described his experience as a beautiful one that ended with jubilation, which he added, prepared him for fatherly responsibilities and made him more prayerful.

However, Mr Steven Abah, a father of four, said he was lucky to have his wife’s pregnancies coming with no challenges.

He said that the change in his wife during her pregnancies was not much and not demanding.

“She did not request for much but I made sure she ate good foods as well as fruits and plenty of water.”

Abah said that most times, his wife had issues trying to sleep after turning to several positions but he always assisted her to get comfort.

He emphasised that hormonal changes in his wife during pregnancy varied for each of their children but none was stressful and mentally exhausting. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Eid-el Kabir: Uzodimma, Otti advocate religious tolerance between Muslim, Christian faithful

    Tolerance
    By Ihechinyere Chigemeri-Uwom/ Peter Okolie
Owerri, June 16, 2023 (NAN) Gov. Hope Uzodimma of Imo and his Abia counterpart, Gov. Alex Otti, have called for religious tolerance between the Muslim and Christian faithful in the country as the Muslim Community worldwide celebrates this year’s Eid-el Kabir.

Uzodimma said: “love, unity, peace, growth, development and more, will be guaranteed in the country, if members of the Muslim and Christian community decide to cohabit, not just in Imo but elsewhere in Nigeria.”

He spoke when he played host to the Muslim leaders in Imo at the Banquet Hall of the Government House, Owerri on Sunday.

He congratulated the Muslim faithful for successfully completing their fasting and the privilege of being alive to witness the 2024 Festival of Sacrifice (Eid-el Kabir).

The governor urged the faithful to “wear tolerance like a cloth.

“Your faiths are simply means of getting to your destination, which is God.

“We cannot grow in an atmosphere of rancour, hatred, killing, blood-letting, armed robbery and other vices, which both the Koran and Bible condemn.

“Tolerance is the name of the business, and with it, inclusive growth and development will be achieved,” he said.

Addressing some Christian faithful, who joined in the celebration, Uzodimma thanked them for the showing solidarity to their Muslim brothers and sisters at the “common communion”.

He said: “If you can eat together, it means you can live together, work together and even protect your environment together.

“It is now time we interrogated our consciences and do those things that please God,” he further said.

The governor used the occasion to congratulate fathers in the state on the occasion of this year’s International Father’s Day celebration.

He said that their support to his government in building a virile society could not be discountenanced.

“We recognise your sacrifices and contributions, which inspire us to strive for a better society and I pray for abundant blessings upon you and your families,” he said.

Earlier, the leadership of the Muslim Community in the state, Alhaji Bashir Uwakwe, assured the governor that they would remain united in all their endeavours.

Uwakwe thanked the governor for deeming it necessary, again, to fete them in the Government House, describing the gesture as “unquantifiable show of love to us and our faith.”

He promised that they would continue to be of good behaviour and to make positive impact in the state.

He appealed to the governor to ensure that more Muslim faithful got the opportunity to be part of next year’s Hajj.

In a related development, the Abia governor called on residents of the state to imbibe the spirit of the Eid-el Kabir by being their brothers’ keepers.

He made the call in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Kazie Uko, and made available to newsmen in Umuahia on Sunday.

He was quoted to have said that the celebration “also promotes love and understanding among individuals, regardless of their diverse cultures, backgrounds and beliefs”.

Otti further said that the celebration upholds the act of sacrifice and selfless service in obedience to Allah’s will.

“This was exemplified by Prophet Ibrahim’s unwavering readiness to sacrifice his son in accordance with Allah’s command,” he was reported as saying.

The governor also described the event as significant in the Islamic calendar and urged the Muslim faithful to emulate Prophet Ibrahim, who demonstrated complete loyalty and trust in his relationship with Allah.

“As the world celebrates this important festival, I enjoin all Muslim faithful across the state to emulate Prophet Ibrahim for his faithful devotion to duty and the will of Allah,” he said.

According to him, the Prophet was willing to offer his only son as a sacrifice for the good of all without questioning.

“I acknowledge the values of selflessness, kindness, and devotion that are at the heart of Eid-el Kabir and pray that this special period will bring us peace, happiness and unity.

“On behalf of the Government and good citizens of our dear state, I extend our warmest greetings to our Muslim brothers and sisters in the state and around the country,” he added.

He promised that the State Government would continue to create equal opportunities and the necessary conducive environment for citizens to live and conduct their businesses.

“We, therefore, call for the continued support and cooperation of every resident in Abia,” Otti said.

  • Cholera: Improve nationwide access to WASH, gastroenterologist appeals to govts

    Cholera
    By Oluwafunke Ishola

Lagos, June 16, 2024 (NAN) A Consultant Gastroenterologist, Dr Mbang Kooffreh-Ada, says adequate access to water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) remains the sustainable solution to reducing the transmission of cholera cases and deaths in the country.

Kooffreh-Ada, who works at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Lagos.

A gastroenterologist is a medical practitioner, who specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the gastrointestinal tract and related organs, NAN reports.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), cholera is an acute diarrhoeal infection caused by ingestion of food or water contaminated with the bacterium Vibrio cholerae.

Cholera can cause severe acute watery diarrhea and the severe forms of the disease can kill within hours if left untreated.

Kooffreh-Ada, however, warned that, “medical interventions alone won’t solve the underlying issues leading to cholera outbreaks”, stressing that cholera is an indicator of inequity and lack of social development.

She stressed the need for the government at all levels to prioritise access to potable water for citizens through the establishment of water boards to supply clean and hygiene pipe borne water to homes.

“We’re in the middle of the rainy season and you have a lot of runoff water from the heavy downpour, which can contaminate water sources, especially in communities where they practice is defecation.

“Many households do not have access to clean pipe borne public water supply from water boards in each of the states where water engineers chlorinate and purify the water.

“Creating a functioning water board in all states would be an avenue to nip this particular problem in the bud,” she said.

The gastroenterologist stressed that open defecation and indiscriminate sewage disposal should be discouraged and laws to punish defaulters put in place to serve as a deterrent to would-be offenders.

She noted that seepage could percolate down and contaminate underground water, thus appealing to borehole engineers to dig deep to prevent contamination of underground water sources.

Kooffreh-Ada noted that fecal-oral transmission was the main driving force behind cholera in most communities, advising the public to boil water to boiling points to kill the pathogens before drinking or cooking with it.

“Some people actually use human waste as manure; so, I always tell my patients that if you are going to prepare meals, especially with vegetables or fruits, make sure you wash them very well under running water.

“If you’re cooking them, you cook to the point where the organism can possibly be killed,” she advised.

The gastroenterologist emphasised that cholera could be easily treated through prompt administration of oral rehydration solution (ORS) or preparing the salt and sugar solution to help the person.

She said that the WHO/UNICEF’s ORS standard sachet should be dissolved in one litre of clean water for children, while adult patients might require up to six litres of ORS to treat moderate dehydration on the first day.

Kooffreh-Ada noted that severely dehydrated patients were required to take the rapid administration of intravenous fluids and appropriate antibiotics under the supervision of healthcare professionals to reduce diarrhea duration and dehydration.

She advised the public to promptly report all cholera cases at nearby health facilities for proper supervision and management to improve patient’s survival.

The gastroenterologist stressed that primary healthcare centres should be adequately equipped, especially with IV infusions, antibiotics and medical personnel to cater for patients with cholera.

She stressed the need for citizens to embrace frequent handwashing, improve hygiene in their homes, and environment to prevent infection with cholera.

NAN reports that the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), on June 12, hinted of increasing cholera cases nationwide, with recorded 30 deaths and 65 confirmed cases of cholera.

NCDC said the cases were reported from 96 local government areas(LGAs) in 30 states between January and June 11, 2024.

The agency disclosed that 10 states contributed 90 per cent to the burden of cholera listing the states to include Bayelsa, Zamfara, Abia, Cross River, Bauchi, Delta, Katsina, Imo, Nasarawa and Lagos.

The Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, on June 11, alerted residents of the state of cholera outbreak resulting in five fatalities and 60 hospitalisation in four LGAs of the state.

Abayomi disclosed that fatalities recorded were from patients with severe gastroenteritis presented late at health facilities with extreme dehydration.

He called for heightened vigilance and adoption of precautionary measures, disclosing that the state had activated a statewide heightened surveillance and response to check the transmission of the disease. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
