    By Alex Enebeli

Enugu, June 17, 2024 (NAN) Gov. Peter Mbah of Enugu State has congratulated Rangers International Football Club of Enugu for winning the 2023/2024 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) title with a game to spare.

The congratulatory message followed the team’s 2-0 victory over Bendel Insurance Football Club of Benin at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium in Enugu on Sunday.

A 33rd minute goal by Kenechukwu Agu and 65th minute goal by Chidiebere Nwobodo handed Rangers their eighth league title and their second since 2016.

Their closest rivals, Remo Stars and Enyimba Football Club, lost their respective match day 37 fixtures 1-2 each against Sunshine Stars and Sporting Lagos.

This left the Flying Antelopes with 67 points with a game to go and five points ahead of their nearest rivals.

Reacting to the development, Mbah said Rangers’ title win and display on the pitch were a clear exciting reenactment of the greatness Enugu State was known for.

He assured that his government would commit more resources toward sports development in the state.

“I can tell you that the government and people of Enugu State are very excited. What we have now is the reenactment of the greatness that Enugu is known for.

“Part of what I said to the players before the match started was that they had the weight of history on their shoulders because they were walking the path legends had walked and that it was incumbent on them to deliver.

“I’m so excited again that this has happened.

“Indeed, our tomorrow is here. It is again part of connecting the dots in the sports sector. As you already know, we want to be the number one in everything we do.

“So, we have zero tolerance for failure or mediocrity and our work ethic is impeccable,” Mbah said.

He said the state would continue on that trajectory, making sure that they had a good reward system, motivate the players to go all out and excel.

On sports infrastructure, he said: “you will attest to the fact that getting our pitch back in shape immediately we assumed office to enable Rangers play their home matches here at ‘The Cathedral’ was a huge motivation for the players.

“But I want to assure Enugu people that they have not seen anything yet. As you are aware, our goal is a total turnaround of the sports industry in the state.

“This includes the sports infrastructure, building world-class facilities and upgrading existing ones to world-class standard.” (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

  • Forum backs Soludo on minimum wage for elected officials

Forum backs Soludo on minimum wage for elected officials

    Wage

    By Adekunle Williams

Lagos, June 17, 2024 (NAN) The Arewa Youth Consultative Forum says it supports the statement by  Gov. Charles Soludo of Anambra that governors and other elected officials should earn only the minimum wage given  the country’s current economic realities .

The National President of the forum, Alhaji Shettima Yerima, said this in an interview  with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday  in Lagos.

NAN reports that Soludo had, while reacting to the rejection of the proposed  N62 ,000 minimum wage by the Nigeria Governor’s Forum, said governors and other elected officials too should earn  minimum wage to have a  feel what workers are going through in the face of economic challenges.

” Let’s come clean and straight with Nigerians. Nigeria is very poor and broke, but the lifestyle of government and government officials does not show it, especially with the obscene flamboyance in public display,

“The poor are hungry and impatient, let us not annoy them more with our insensitivity. In this case, I agree with Reverend Father Mbaka, who said elected governors should also earn minimum wage. I agree that we should be paid that so that we can feel that as well.”,Soludo had said .

Yerima told NAN that in a country where the disparity between the earnings of political leaders and the average citizen is staggering, such a stance is not only refreshing but also necessary in fostering a more equitable society.

He said: “The statement made by Gov. Charles Soludo of Anambra, regarding the need for governors and other elected officials to earn only the minimum wage in order to reflect the current economic reality of Nigeria is both bold and commendable.

“For too long, Nigeria has been plagued by corruption and a lack of accountability among its political class. Elected officials often receive exorbitant salaries and allowances while the majority of the population struggles to make ends meet.

“This imbalance not only breeds resentment among the populace but also perpetuates a culture of entitlement among those in power.

“By advocating for governors and other elected officials to earn only the minimum wage, the governor is sending a strong message that public service should not be about personal enrichment but  about working towards the common good.”he said.

Yerima said that Soludo’s statement  should be lauded and supported by all Nigerians, who ,he said ,were tired of the excesses and opulence of their leaders while the country continues to face  challenges.

The forum ‘s president said it was improper for leaders not to identify with the people  in the face of  widespread poverty, inadequate infrastructure and a struggling healthcare system.

According to him, elected officials should be  willing to make sacrifices and tighten their belts in solidarity with the people they serve .

“There is the nerd  for elected officials to be in touch with the realities faced by the average Nigerian, as it is only through shared experiences and empathy that true change can be achieved.

“The call is a step in the right direction towards creating a more just and equitable society.

“His bold stance should be supportjed and emulated by leaders at all levels of government, as it signifies a commitment to serving the people rather than exploiting their positions for personal gain.

“As Nigerians, we must demand accountability and integrity from our political leaders,” he said.

  • Tomori kicks as Nigeria shows disinterest in WHO Africa’s regional directorship

    WHO

    By Abujah Racheal

Abuja, June 17, 2024 (NAN) A Nigerian Scientist, Prof.  Oyewale Tomori, has expressed disappointment over Nigeria’s continuous exclusion from the role of Regional Director for the World Health Organisation (WHO) African Region.

Tomori, a renowned Nigerian Virologist, expressed his concern in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Monday.

NAN reports that the document “CODE OF CONDUCT FOR THE NOMINATION OF THE REGIONAL DIRECTOR” outlines guidelines established during the Sixty-eighth session of the Regional Committee for Africa in Dakar, Senegal, held from Aug. 27 to Aug.  31 August 2018.

Its purpose is to enhance the transparency fairness, and credibility of the process for nominating the Regional Director of (WHO) for the African Region.

The Code builds upon existing rules and procedures, particularly Rule 52 of the Regional Committee’s Rules of Procedure, and incorporates principles such as fairness, equity, transparency, and non-discrimination.

It addresses specific aspects of the nomination process, including the submission of proposals, electoral campaigns, and the conduct of member-states’ and candidates.

The Code emphasises ethical conduct, mutual respect, and the avoidance of conflicts of interest among candidates.

Key provisions include the standardisation of curriculum vitae submissions, restrictions on campaign activities, and guidelines for maintaining confidentiality during the nomination meetings.

The adoption of this Code aims to harmonise practices across WHO regional committees and uphold the integrity of the nomination process for regional directors in the African Region.

Tomori said that in spite having highly qualified candidates,  Nigeria had never held this influential position in the WHO.

According to him, it is a worrisome trend that also undermines and limits the career progression and aspirations  of citizens in the organisation.

He attributed this to a lack of governmental support, especially from the Coordinating Ministry of Health and Social Welfare in Nigeria.

He alleged that the ministry often showed bias in favour of candidates from specific tribes rather than supporting the most qualified individuals.

He said that this persistent geopolitical favoritism and calculated negligence have frustrated capable Nigerian candidates.

“This pattern of internal opposition has resulted in Nigeria’s absence from a significant role in global health leadership, undermining the country’s potential contributions to WHO Africa’s mission,” he said.

NAN reports that the names of the candidates for the election of the next Regional Director for the WHO African Region were sent by WHO Director-General, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus to the relevant Member States on June 14.

The candidates include Dr N’da Konan Michel Yao, proposed by Côte d’Ivoire and  Dr Boureima Hama Sambo, proposed by Niger Republic.

Others are Dr Richard Mihigo, proposed by Rwanda, Dr Ibrahima Socé Fall, proposed by Senegal and Faustine Engelbert Ndugulile, proposed by Tanzania.

Meanwhile, the African Regional Committee of  WHO will vote to nominate the next Regional Director in a closed meeting during its 74th session from Aug. 26 to Aug. 30 in Brazzaville, Republic of Congo.

The nomination will then be submitted for appointment by the 156th session of the WHO Executive Board, which takes place in January 2025 in Geneva, Switzerland.

The newly appointed Regional Director is expected to assume office on  Feb. 1,  2025, for a five-year term and be eligible for reappointment for one additional term.

The Regional Director is appointed by the WHO Executive Board in agreement with the WHO Regional Committee for Africa.

Any member-state of the region may propose one or more candidates for the position.

The Regional Director is elected by secret ballot at a private meeting of the Regional Committee NAN) www.nannews.ng

  • Businessman files N500m suit against I-G, others over alleged rights violation

    Suit
    By Taiye Agbaje

Abuja, June 16, 2024 (NAN) A businessman, Musa Saliu, has filed a N500 million against the Inspector-General (I-G) of Police and others over allegations bordering on violation of his fundamental human rights.

Others joined in the suit filed by his lawyer, Femi Motojesi at the FCT High Court, include the DIG, Force Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Department and Funmilola Florence Olorunfemi as 2nd to 3rd defendants respectively.

The action is a fundamental rights enforcement suit brought under Sections 34, 35, 41 and 46; Articles 5 and 6 of the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights Cap 10 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

Saliu alleged that the police falsely declared him a wanted person in a land dispute in their Special Police Gazette Bulletin.

He, therefore, prayed the court to declare that the publication of his picture and name in the bulletin as a wanted person with Ref No: CB: 3510/LX/FHQ/SEB/ABJ/T.7/Vo. 1/20 amounted to the violation of his fundamental rights.

He submitted that the police lacked such powers “to engage in the act of debt recovery for the 3rd defendant (Olorunfemi) who is a subscriber to the applicant’s (Saliu’s) estate under construction.”

The applicant prayed the court to order the police to unfreeze the account number: 1000129689 with Globus Bank belonging to Emperor City Integrated Limited where he is the alter ego and signatory for being a violation of his fundamental rights.

Saliu, who is also a politician and former New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP)’s governorship candidate in Kogi in 2023 poll, is demanding the sum of N500 million in damages for the violation of his constitutionally guaranteed rights to privacy and dignity of the human person, personal liberty, and freedom of movement when the police declared him wanted.

Saliu, in the suit marked: FCT/ CV/2839/24, is further asking the court to order the police to issue an apology published in the Special Police Gazette Bulletin and two national dailies.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that a certified true copy of the suit, dated June 14, was made available to newsmen on Sunday in Abuja.

According to the estate developer, the dispute arose after Olorunfemi paid N25 million to subscribe to one of his houses being built but work halted after the FCT Department of Development Control demolished the estate.

He said Olorunfemi invited the police to recover her money even after he had notified all the subscribers to the estate that he was making efforts to resolve the issue and return to site.

He is contending that the relationship between him and Olorunfemi is civil in nature and has no criminal connotation to warrant the police delving into it.

Saliu submitted that inviting him for questioning, blocking his account and publishing his picture and details as a wanted person in the Police Gazette Bulletin were unlawful.

The matter is yet to be assigned to a judge.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

  • Involve boys in house chores – Nigerians say

Involve boys in house chores – Nigerians say

    Chores

    By Anita Uzoagba

Abuja, June 16, 2024 (NAN) Nigerians from all walks of life on Sunday expressed their views on the need for parents to get boys involved in doing house chores.

They told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja, that  allowing only the girl child to do the house chores, while the boys play football or other games, was “old fashion”.

Some believe that involving the male child in house chores would instill discipline and responsibility in them.

The Executive Director, Administration, of Every Life Matters Foundation, Mr Benjamin Obasi, advised parents to invest time to train their male children to become responsible adults.

Obasi said that the society had invested so much time to train and educate the girl child in terms of house chores and neglected the boy child to become a nuisance.

According to him, no girl child will be abused if the boy child gets adequate home training.

”Doing house chores are part of the training a boy child should undergo. It is bad to make them grow up with the mentality that a girl child is less valuable,” he said.

On his part, Mr John Atomore, an activist, said it was important to involve the male child in house chores, because chores are not gender based.

“It is a form of training for the boy child, who will live alone some day before starting a family.

“Parents should encourage the male child by making them understand that house chores are not a gender role, but a survival skill.

”When a male child is involved in chores, he will not know whether certain duties are meant for a girl child or not.

“He gains satisfaction in doing it himself when he is used to it,” he said.

Similarly, Mrs Bisiola Adeyanju, a mother of one, said that she has a male child and was going to train him to be a responsible adult to himself, family and society.

“A male child should be involved in chores immediately he can differentiate between left and right.

“We need to involve them early to reduce gender bias in the society because home, they say, is where charity begins.

“The male child should see chores as a normal life responsibility,’’ Adeyanju said.

Mr Ezeabasili Okwudili, a civil servant, said that involving male children in household chores would help break gender stereotypes.

“It will promote equality, and teach important life skills like responsibility, empathy and teamwork.

“It sets a foundation for more equitable relationships and domestic responsibilities in the future.

“My mother involved me in house chores as early as pre-school age. I was washing my socks,” he said.

Okwudili said that helping with laundry could instill a sense of responsibility and contribute to the child’s overall development.

He said as the child grows older, the parent could gradually increase the complexity of the chores assigned to him.

“One way to encourage a male child to take ownership of his chores is by involving him in the decision-making process.

“As a parent, we should provide positive reinforcement and praises for his efforts,” he said.

Okwudili added that setting clear expectations and offering the child rewards for completing chores could also motivate him.

He also urged parents to lead by example and show appreciation for their contributions.

Also, Mr Mmesomachi Anyanwu, a teacher, said that parents could involve a male child in chores by putting them in charge of their personal toys.

“Chores like this send the message to your child that his contribution is important.

“Boys need to learn some housework because, eventually, they are going to be on their own.

“There is nothing as pathetic as a grown man who does not know how to wash his clothes,” he said.

Anyanwu said that chores were training for house responsibilities as adults. He identified the major tasks to include cleaning dishes and sorting out clothes for washing.

He opined that these were basic life skills for the upkeep and maintenance of a home, which everyone needed to know.(NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

  • FCT residents celebrate Sallah amidst high cost of rams, foodstuff

FCT residents celebrate Sallah amidst high cost of rams, foodstuff

    Sallah

    By Veronica Dariya

Bwari (Abuja), June 16, 2024 (NAN) Muslim faithful in Bwari community in the FCT, celebrated the 2024 Eid-el Kabir amid high cost of rams and other food items, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

Some of the residents told NAN in separate interviews on Sunday in Abuja, that the economic situation would not deter their joy and cost them the celebration.

Mr Aliyu Nafada, a Muslim faithful in Sabon-Gari community, Bwari, said the cost of ram had increased and was almost unaffordable due to the prevailing economic challenges.

“I went to Dei-dei market last week to purchase a big ram but ended up with a small one because I could not afford the big one.

“The one I ended up buying cost me N85,000, while the big one I wanted to buy was sold for a negotiable price of N190, 000.

“Many buyers went there and couldn’t afford the rams and they went home disappointed,” he said.

Nafada said that he also bought perishables like tomatoes and peppers at exorbitant prices, adding that no matter the situation, the celebration would hold.

Mr Rilwanu Isah, a commercial motorcyclist, said that people were only trying to fulfill their religious obligations but Allah did not put a burden on anyone, who could not afford the sacrifice of ram.

He said: “I could not afford a ram last year and even this year because the price keeps going higher due to the inflation in the economy.

“If Allah permits me to buy, I will, but people must know that Allah has not put a burden on any Muslim who cannot afford a ram.

”It is good if you can afford a ram, if you can’t, just celebrate either way.”

Isah said that he bought just two kilograms of beef for N5, 500 each, tomatoes worth N5, 000 and four ‘mudu’ of rice for N9, 600, to cook and make merry with his family, friends and neighbours.

However, another Muslim faithful, Malam Adamu Sale, a public servant, told NAN that with the help of his wife, a business woman, they were able to buy one ram at N220,000, for the celebration.

Sale said that since his family could not afford to travel for the holiday, as they usually do each year, it cost him less to celebrate in Bwari alongside other friends and neighbors.

“As you can see, we just came back from the praying ground to thank God for today, we will go home to perform our sacrifice, eat and share with others.

”After that, we can go out to see places of recreation, if not today, tomorrow.

“We will definitely celebrate, irrespective of the economic challenges because we are grateful to Allah for life.”

He also noted that, celebrating the day on a Sunday with Christians going to Church was a sign of unity and a blessing.

A NAN correspondent, who visited some ram selling points and markets in the area, reports that an average-sized ram was sold from N80,000, with some going as high as a negotiable price of N500, 000.

A big basket of tomatoes was sold for N190, 000 as compared to its previous price of N150,000 in May.

A smaller baskets and mini buckets of the perishable item was sold from N10,000 to N15,000 respectively.

NAN further reports that sacrificing a ram during Sallah, also known as Eid al-Adha, holds profound religious significance for Muslims.

It commemorates Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son in obedience to God’s command, demonstrating immense faith and submission.(NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
