Tunis, Tunisia – December 6, 2025: Tunisia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Migration, and Tunisians Abroad, Mohamed Ali Nafti, participated in a ministerial roundtable in Geneva on Friday. The event, titled “Migration in Africa at a Crossroads: From Cooperation to Solutions,” was organized by the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
In his address, Minister Nafti outlined Tunisia’s efforts to contribute to practical solutions for irregular migration. He emphasized a comprehensive approach based on respecting the dignity of migrants who are victims of human trafficking networks and on saving lives. The minister highlighted the need to balance humanitarian concerns with security requirements, development needs, and the fair sharing of responsibilities among regional and international partners.
The minister reiterated Tunisia’s firm position on migration governance, stressing the importance of respecting legal residency procedures. He stated that Tunisia remains a land of cultural convergence for those who follow established immigration rules.
Minister Nafti detailed the practical measures taken by Tunisian authorities, in close coordination with the IOM office in Tunisia, to ensure the smooth operation of voluntary return programs. He called for enhanced regional and international coordination to combat human trafficking networks more effectively. The minister also underscored the importance of funding development projects for youth in their countries of origin upon return, advocating for a shift from forced displacement to coordinated mobility and from aid-based models to partnerships based on shared interests, skills exchange, and technology transfer.
On the sidelines of the forum, Minister Nafti held a meeting with IOM Director General Amy Pope and other officials to review existing cooperation and discuss accelerating voluntary return programs. A separate meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Benin, Olushegun Adjadi Bakari, focused on strengthening bilateral economic and academic cooperation.
