Mohammed said the fire service was, however, able to rescue 112 persons and goods worth N300 million in 22 fire outbreaks in August.

According to him, the service received 82 rescue calls and 18 false alarms from residents during the period.

2019 APC primaries: Chieftain lauds party for endorsing consensus in Ebonyi

    Primaries

    By Douglas Okoro

Abakaliki, Sept. 10, 2018 (NA) A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ebonyi, Chief Egwu Chima, has commended the party for endorsing consensus in the selection of the party’s flag bearers for the 2019 general elections.

Chima, a former Commissioner for Information and Orientation in Ebonyi, made the commendation in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Abakaliki.

According to him, the prevailing circumstances in the state demands that the party use consensus in choosing candidates that will carry the party’s flags for the various elective positions in order to reduce tension that usually characterised party primaries.

He said: “Circumstances in men’s lives dictate their philosophy and conversely, the philosophy of men influence their circumstances.

“The decision of our party in Ebonyi is a re-echoing of the earlier decision of the mainstream APC, aimed at ensuring that best and credible persons emerge as our candidates in the elections irrespective of economic background.

“By the wisdom of our members, followers and stakeholders, we empowered our leaders to look into all the aspirants and look for certain qualities that are peculiar to the people of Ebonyi.

“These include our psychology, our philosophy and our collective aspirations and come up with a guideline that will enable the party come up with a people-driven governor.

“A man that will be humble and approachable, that when he gets into office will not become power-drunk and forgets that he is in power to serve the people that elected him into power.

“The idea is to ensure that aspirants with stupendous wealth and with questionable character do not hijack the process and emerge as flag bearers.

“I commend our party elders, leaders and critical stakeholders for adopting consensus method for choosing governorship and other candidates for the 2019 elections.

“The decision was taken in compliance to national directives and in line with decision of the National Executive Committee (NEC) as well as in conformity with decisions we have earlier taken.”

Chima called on party faithful especially aspirants to embrace the option as the best for party.

Chima  a board member of the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN) expressed confidence that APC would win in the 2019 general elections in Ebonyi.

He further called on the people of the  South-East to vote massively for the re-election of President Muhammadu Buhari for second term, whom he said had done well in his first term.

NAN recalls that the State Executive Council (SEC) of APC in Ebonyi voted recently at a SEC meeting to adopt consensus in its party primaries, while indirect primaries will be used where consensus fails to produce candidates. (NAN)

  • Gov. Masari extols leadership qualities of Emir of Daura

    Commendation

    By Auwalu Yusuf

Daura (Katsina State), Sept. 10, 2018 (NAN) Gov. Aminu Masari of Katsina has commended the exemplary leadership qualities of the Emir of Daura, Alhaji Farouk Umar, describing him as “a role model” for the nation’s young leaders.

Masari gave the commendation in Daura, when he inaugurated two palace chambers renovated by the Emir from his personal resources.

The governor particularly commended Umar’s loyalty, simplicity, hospitality, resourcefulness and peaceful disposition in the discharge of his official conduct, and urged others in leadership positions to emulate such attributes.

“Your lifestyle is exceptionally simple; you are unique in your ways and worthy of emulation by all,” he said.

Masari expressed surprise that Umar had conducted his affairs “without being beggarly”, and assured him of the state government’s readiness to support efforts that would attract respect and recognition to traditional institutions.

“All the prominent Nigerians that troop to this revered palace leave with stories of your humility, generosity and warmth. We are proud of this and want to say thank you for these wonderful legacies,” he said.

Earlier, the Emir had said that he renovated the palace with his little resources to give the palace “a befitting status, considering that Daura is the home of President Muhammadu Buhari”.

He promised that his council would continue to support government policies to ensure success.

“We shall also pray for people in leadership positions so that the almighty will guide them,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the governor was accompanied on the visit by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Mustapha Inuwa, as well as top government functionaries and politicians. (NAN)

  • Serena Williams’ U.S. Open treatment divides tennis world

Serena Williams’ U.S. Open treatment divides tennis world

New York, Sept. 10, 2018 (Reuters/NAN) Serena Williams’ behavior in Saturday’s U.S. Open final divided the tennis world after she called the chair umpire a “liar” and a “thief”.

She also said he treated her differently than male players during her loss to Naomi Osaka.

Williams, who was seeking a record-equaling 24th Grand Slam singles title on Saturday, was handed a warning for a coaching violation before being deducted a point for smashing her racket.

She then had a heated argument with chair umpire Carlos Ramos, which cost her a game.

The six-times U.S. Open champion, who has since been fined 17,000 dollars by the United States Tennis Association for the violations, vigorously disputed each during the match.

In the wake of Osaka’s first Grand Slam triumph, there were messages of support for Williams as well as those condemning her behavior and agreeing with the umpire’s calls.

Tennis great Billy Jean King wrote on Twitter: “When a woman is emotional, she’s “hysterical” and she’s penalized for it.

“When a man does the same, he’s “outspoken” and there are no repercussions. Thank you, @serenawilliams, for calling out this double standard. More voices are needed to do the same.”

Yet Australian Margaret Court, whose tally of Grand Slam singles titles is being chased by Williams, had little sympathy for the 36-year-old American former world number one.

“We always had to go by the rules,” Court, who dominated tennis during the 1960s and early 1970s, said according to a report in The Australian.

“It’s sad for the sport when a player tries to become bigger than the rules.

“Because the young player outplayed her in the first set, I think pressure got her more than anything.”

The drama started when Ramos handed Williams a coaching violation early in the second set because of hand gestures made from the stands by her coach Patrick Mouratoglou.

He later admitted the offence, which that is not allowed in the sport but rarely enforced.

When the violation was announced Williams approached Ramos to insist she never takes coaching and would rather lose than “cheat to win”.

Things seemed to settle down as Williams went on to break Osaka for a 3-1 lead, but she gave the break right back in the next game with a pair of double faults, prompting the former champion to smash her racquet on the court.

That resulted in a second violation, meaning Osaka was awarded the first point of the sixth game.

Williams, who was under the impression the first violation had been rescinded, returned to Ramos to seek an apology for saying she had received coaching earlier.

During a changeover, Williams resumed her argument with the umpire, this time saying he was attacking her character and was a “thief”.

That triggered a third violation, which resulted in a game penalty that gave Osaka a 5-3 lead.

From there, Williams summoned the tournament referee to the court and said male tennis players are not punished for similar offences.

Tennis great John McEnroe, one of the game’s most tempestuous characters in his playing days, said the sport must find a way to allow players to express feelings and inject their personality into the game while adhering to certain rules.

According to McEnroe, Ramos should not have given Williams a violation for breaking her racquet and should have warned her early on about what would happen if she did not move on.

“I’ve said far worse,” McEnroe, a seven-times Grand Slam singles winner, said on ESPN. “She’s right about the guys being held to a different standard, there’s no question.”

Yet Richard Ings, a former professional chair umpire who also used to be the ATP Tour Executive Vice-President, Rules and Competition, felt it was Williams who needed to apologize.

Ings once issued a warning, point penalty and a game penalty against McEnroe at the 1987 U.S. Open for obscenities directed at the umpire.

“We should not let her record, as glowing as it is, overshadow the fact that on this day, in this match Williams was wrong,” Ings wrote in The Sydney Morning Herald.

“The decisions made by Ramos had nothing to do with sexism or racism.

“They had everything to do with observing clear breaches of the grand slam code of conduct and then having the courage to call them without fear or favor.” (Reuters/NAN)

  • ENL Consortium, Chinese firm partner to move cargo by barges

    Barges
    By Aisha Cole
Lagos, Sept. 10, 2018 (NAN) The ENL Consortium, operators of Terminals C and D, Lagos Port Complex, Apapa has entered into strategic partnership with a Chinese logistics, Sinoma Cargo International, to evacuate cargo from the port using barges.

The consortium’s Executive Vice Chairman, Princess Vicky Hasstrup, disclosed this at the China-Nigeria Core Liner Conference in Lagos.

Hasstrup said in a statement signed on Monday by the spokesman of ENL Consortium, Mr Bolaji Akinola, that the partnership also incorporated Josephdam Port Services and Lianyungang Port of China.

She said the cargo throughput of Lianyungang port is 210 million ton per year while its container throughput is 5 million Twenty-Foot Equivalent Unit (TEU) per year.

Hasstrup said the existing poor transport infrastructure in Nigeria is affecting the economic performance and competitiveness of the port.

She said the partnership became imperative given the persistent gridlock on the port access roads in Apapa.

Hasstrup said the partnership would help promote mutual cooperation and exchange between Liayungang and the Lagos ports.

”We have been to Lianyungang Port at the invitation of Sinoma, and there, we signed a friendship agreement sometimes in July. They also expressed their willingness to come to Nigerian port to see what ENL and other ports look like.

“This conference was organised to brainstorm on how to have a better operational logistics which is Sinoma’s core duty.

“We know what it is getting in and out of Apapa and discharging of cargo because of the present traffic situation in Apapa and its environs.

“So this afforded us the opportunity to brainstorm on what else can be done under a Public Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement other than road since their core business is logistics.

“Sinoma has told us they would want to bring barges that can evacuate cargo at the seaside in large volume. The barges are the types that we have not seen in Nigeria that can take several hundreds of tons of cargo at once.”

She stressed the need for the deployment of intermodal means of transportation at the port, noting that continuous reliance on the road is no longer feasible.

“There has to be investments in other modes of transportation other than road because already the roads are undergoing a lot of pressure because the roads in Nigeria are not built to withstand the kind of pressure that they are subjected to,” she said.

Hasstrup assured stakeholders that terminal operators in the country would continue to provide efficient port services that conform to global standards.

She added that efforts to develop the port industry would achieve greater effects if strategic alliances and partnership are grown, not just between private and public entities alone, but between business entities.

The General Manager, Sinoma Cargo, Li Zhanzhu, said the firm has established good relationship with ENL Consortium and Josephdam Port Services, which both handle several consignments shipped into Nigeria from China.

He said from January 2018 till date, the firm has operated 12 batches of Lianyungang-Lagos logistics line, organised and transported more than 410,000 dead weight of general cargo and transported more than 2,000 TEU of containers.

The products, according to him, cover steel and templates, engineering equipment and tools. (NAN)
