  • NUJ presidential aspirant vows to force employers to pay journalists’ salaries

    NUJ

    By Emmanuel Antswen

Makurdi, Sept. 13, 2018 (NAN) Mr Abiodun Olalere, who is aspiring to be President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), has promised to force employers to settle salaries, pensions and other entitlements owed newsmen.

Olalere, who was in Makurdi on Thursday, on a consultation visit to the Benue chapter of the union, said he would also ensure regular payments of salaries to media workers and prosecute defaulting employers.

The aspirant decried a situation where journalists’ salaries were hardly paid, regretting that some newsmen were owed years of salaries, pensions and gratuity.

“When journalists are not paid their salaries, it becomes morally difficult to hold them to basic ethics. We shall not allow employers to deny our members their entitlements,” he said.

Olalere also promised to amend the union’s constitution, saying that the measure had become necessary to address several lingering issues.

The aspirant, who promised to restore sanity and integrity to the system, promised to run the body for “just one term of 3 years”, if elected

He expressed dissatisfaction with NUJ’s decision to adopt different guidelines for the conduct of state chapters’ elections in different states, saying that the situation had often bred injustice and crisis.

The aspirant, who is the immediate past chairman of the Osun State chapter of the union, promised to focus on promoting the core values of journalism, adding that he would run a participatory system that would involve all members.

In his remarks, Mr Martins Kajo, acting chairman of the union in Benue, said that the chapter would access the presidential aspirants on merit.

Kajo commended the aspirant’s “brilliant” blueprint toward an effective and efficient NUJ, and called for unity among members to meet set goals.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the NUJ delegates conference is scheduled to hold in Abeokuta in October. (NAN)

  • LASG strengthens surveillance to prevent outbreak of Monkey pox – Commissioner

LASG strengthens surveillance to prevent outbreak of Monkey pox – Commissioner
    Monkey pox
    By Lydia Ngwakwe
Lagos, Sept. 13, 2018 (NAN) The Lagos State Government on Thursday said it had strengthened its disease surveillance, detection and response systems to prevent the outbreak of Monkey pox in the state.
The state Commissioner for Health, Dr Jide Idris, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.
He spoke against the background of the two confirmed cases of Monkey pox in patients with recent travel history from Nigeria now receiving medical attention in the United Kingdom (UK).
“There is no report of Monkey pox in Lagos, in the past where there were cases like that; most of the cases were imported to the state.
“So with our disease surveillance systems in place, we are in a better position to track and detect any viral diseases if they do occur.
“This will involve all the local governments, investigative data and if we see any abnormal trend, then we start investigating,” Idris said.
According to him, the National Centre for Disease Control denied any case of Monkey pox in the country.
The commissioner said the assertion that the people had travel history from Nigeria did not necessarily mean that the diseases were contacted in Nigeria.
He urged the Federal Government to put in place processes that would properly, and most importantly, prevent the outbreak of the virus.
He stressed the need to sensitise the public on the measures for prevention and control of the disease should it happen.
Idris said: “One of the best ways to do it is to have a better and proper surveillance system that can track all these diseases, apart from public enlightenment to ensure that it does not happen.
“If we adopt the right environmental control, good personal behaviour, then a lot of these things will not happen,” he added.
The commissioner urged Nigerians to prevent direct and steady contact with infected animals, humans or contaminated materials.
Monkey pox is a virus that is spread primarily from animals to humans, with symptoms such as fever, headache, body pain, malaise, lymphadenopathy (enlargement of glands), sore throat and the typical generalised vesicular rash. (NAN)

  • Oyo State begins sale of 2019 Hajj form

    Pilgrims
    By Suleiman Shehu
Ibadan, Sept. 13, 2018 (NAN) The Oyo State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board has started the sale of form to intending pilgrims for 2019 Hajj, upon completion of the 2018 Hajj exercise on Sept. 6.

The Chairman of the board, Alhaji Taofeek Akewugbagold, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ibadan on Thursday.

Akewugbagold said that the board had not increased the cost of the Hajj from the more than N1.2 million charged for the 2018 Hajj.

He said that the board commenced the sales of the form early in order to build on the achievements recorded in 2018 and to register more pilgrims for the coming hajj.

Akewugbagold said that Oyo State was one of the few states that exhausted the allocation given by the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) in 2018.

“Oyo State was the first state in the South West to return all her 992 pilgrims from Saudi Arabia.

“ We spent only 23 days, which was less than a month in Saudi Arabia at this year’s hajj exercise compared to the previous years when we spent about 45 days.

“We were able to arrive early because of the agreement we signed with Flynas, a Saudi Arabia air carrier,’’ Akewugbagold said.

He commended NAHCON for the success recorded in 2018 and appealed to the commission to ensure early arrival of pilgrims.

Akewugbagold lauded Gov. Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State for the moral and financial support given to the board which contributed to the success recorded. (NAN)

NPower boosts teacher population in Cross River schools

    NPower
    By Christian Njoku
Calabar, Sept. 13, 2018 (NAN) The Federal Government’s NPower programme has boosted teachers population in schools in Calabar, says Mr. Etim Essien, the Vice Principal (Administration) of Margaret Ekpo Secondary School.

Essien told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Calabar that with the coming of the NPower teachers in almost all subject areas, the work in his school had been made easier.

The initiative is designed to curb unemployment and increase skills among Nigerian youths through hands-on training.

“Teachers in the school for now are very adequate in almost all subject areas; they have made our work easier and have boosted the population of the teachers in the school.

He said the teachers were very happy to resume for a new academic session and had had their pre-resumption meeting where necessary arrangements were made to make the term better than the previous one.

“This term, we have decided to renovate the school toilets ourselves; the principal has even built one all by herself since help was not forthcoming from the state Government.

“We have also decided to lock the school gate immediately it is 8:30 a.m. to reduce late coming and to sanction teachers who refuse to do their work.

The vice principal highlighted some of the needs of the school to include more classroom blocks, toilets and quarters for corps members serving in the school.

He added that the issues that made teachers in the state to embark on a strike before the long vacation had e yet to be resolved.

Similarly, Mr Emedion Orok, the Vice Principal, Government Secondary School Akim, said he was happy to resume even though the holiday was short.

Orok added that though more teachers had been sent to the school, courtesy of the NPower programme, the school still needed qualified teachers in special areas.

“We need qualified teachers in special areas because most of the people sent to us are in particular areas; sciences are lacking.

“For now, we have been given empty classes; we need school desks for the students to be able to come in; the school needs a library and science laboratories for better learning.”

He implored all parents to release their wards to go to school as the 2018/2019 academic session had commenced.

Some of the students who spoke with NAN, urged the state government address critical issues in the schools such as inadequate, classrooms and laboratories, toilets and the lack of water. (NAN)

  • Child adoption: Stakeholders demand stringent conditions

Child adoption: Stakeholders demand stringent conditions
    Adoption
Bauchi, Sept. 13, 2018 (NAN) Stakeholders in the North East region have called for stringent conditions to protect the rights of adopted children in the country.

They made the appeal in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Bauchi, Gombe, Yola and neighbouring Dutse.

The stakeholders, including social welfare experts, lawyers, human right activists and parents noted that the adoption process in the affected states is not stringent.

One of the respondents, Mr Rambi Ayala, a Gombe-based legal practitioner, advocated that adopted children be granted the right to inherit assets of those who adopted them.

Ayala told NAN in Gombe that every child; whether adopted or not, had the right to be cared for by his/her parents and should not be denied the right to inherit in an event of death.

He said that adopted children, from a global perspective, had the right to even choose which parents they would want to adopt them.

“Every child, based on the global perspective, has the right to life and right to choice, including choosing his or her foster parents.

“In most civilised societies like America, children have the right to determine who they want to adopt them.

“Parents do not have the right to adopt children, only to use them as slaves, or for trafficking purposes; it is against the Child Rights Act of 2003,” he said.

Mrs Amina Idris, the Information Officer, Bauchi State Agency for Vulnerable Persons and Orphanage, said procedures for adopting or fostering of a child in the state was not cumbersome.

Idris said that the process involved filling a form provided by the agency, as well as submitting a letter of introduction from an employer, traditional rulers, religious leaders or any relevant body.

She explained that officials of the agency would thereafter proceed with the assessment of homes of prospective parents, as well as their means of livelihood.

The spokesperson said that the agency always ensured that the adopted children were not discriminated against in the home, and their rights to education, health and other social amenities, fully guaranteed.

On his part, Alhaji Nasiru Nasoro, the Director Social Welfare, Jigawa Ministry of Women Affairs, said the state government had laid down conditions for the granting of requests of those in need of children to adopt.

“Before we release any child for adoption, certain conditions must be satisfied and rules observed,” Nasoro said.

“We must visit the houses of those who want to adopt the children to find out the history of the family and economic status, among others.

“After granting the request for adoption, we coordinate to ensure the safety of the children, just as government gives stipend to those that are taking care of the children,” he said.

The director stated that the Child Rights Act was before the State House of Assembly for consideration and domestication by the state.

According to the director, there is no baby factory in the state, but added that religious and traditional leaders encouraged fostering and adoption of children.

Mrs Maisaratu Bello, the Permanent Secretary, Adamawa Ministry for Women Affairs ,Youths and Social Development, said the state has only a law on fostering of children and not adoption.

She also said that there was no report of existing ‘baby factory’ in the state.

“We have no child adoption policy in the state, but instead we encourage fostering of children,” Bello said.

The permanent secretary said that the ministry had a Child Rights Protection Department overseeing the implementation of the fostering policy.

She said that any couple that needed a child must apply and also appear physically before the department for interview.

Mr Audu Haruna of Social Welfare Department in the ministry said that couples that needed a child in the state must pass through various government agencies and intensive investigations before approval was granted.

“Even after approval and release of the child to the couple, they must sign agreement letter that the child is not under any adoption.

“Also the child still remain part of government property and from time to time, officials will be visiting to assess his or her living condition,” Haruna said.

On Child Rights Act, Mr Titus Simon of UNWomen in Adamawa, said that the Bill was before the State Assembly for domestication.

Simon said that various organisations were lobbying the state legislature to pass the Bill into the law to ensure that the rights children were protected. (NAN)
