  • Lafarge Africa spends N661.63m on CSR in Nigeria in 2017

Lafarge Africa spends N661.63m on CSR in Nigeria in 2017

    Investment

    By Chinyere Joel-Nwokeoma

Lagos, Sept. 19, 2018 (NAN) Lafarge Africa Plc said on Wednesday that the company spent N661. 63 million on corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives across Nigeria in 2017.

Mrs Temitope Oguntokun, Head, Sustainability and Corporate Brand, stated this at a news conference on Lafarge Africa’s fifth National Literacy Competition (LANLC) in Lagos.

Oguntokun said the CSR initiatives cut across the company’s four cardinal points; youth empowerment, education, health and poverty alleviation/affordable housing.

She said close to 800,000 Nigerians were impacted across the country through the CSR initiatives of the company in 2017.

Oguntokun said N300 million out of N661.63 million was invested on various education initiatives to enhance the country’s literacy level.

She noted that education was a big pillar in the company’s CSR initiative through which it renovated so many schools during the period.

“When it comes to CSR, we are quite strategic and very careful in our approach because we want to be a social contributor across board,” she said.

Oguntokun said the CSR investments in Africa by LafargeHolcim stood at N2.4 billion in 2017 comprising investments in education projects, employment projects and infrastructure projects, among others.

Speaking on LANLC, Mrs Folashade Ambrose-Medebem, the company’s Director of Communications and Public Affairs, said the initiative was instituted in 2014 to bridge the literacy gap in the country.

Ambrose-Medebem said the company had received the endorsement of the Universal Basic Education Commission, UBEC, for the nationwide education intervention.

She said UBEC’s endorsement was in recognition of the remarkable contribution of the initiative to the development of literacy in the country’s primary schools.

Ambrose-Medebem said representatives from each state would be selected in a competition from Sept. 17 to 27 across the country.

She added that the regional competition would hold across the six geopolitical zones of the country in Abuja, Enugu, Cross River, Ogun, Kano and Gombe in October.

According to her, the grand finale of the 5th LANLC would hold on Nov. 15 in Lagos where winners would be rewarded.

She said the company in the past four years had been organising the National Literacy Competition to support government efforts in raising the standard of literacy among pupils in public primary schools between the ages of nine and 13 years.

According to her, the competition is organised in partnership with the respective State Universal Basic Education Boards, SUBEB in all 36 states of Nigeria and the FCT, with the support of Ovie Brume Foundation.

She, however, called on stakeholders to work together by embracing the initative aimed at boosting the country’s literacy level by investing in future leaders. (NAN)

  • 20,000MW target: Entrepreneur urges FG to double network of pipelines

    Pipelines

    By Yunus Yusuf

Lagos, Sept. 19, 2018 (NAN) Dr Ernest Azudialu-Obiejesi, the Chairman of Nestoil Limited, has advised the Federal Government to double the network of pipelines to enhance power generating stations’ access to natural gas supply.

Azudialu-Obiejesi gave the advice at the second edition of the Nigerian International Pipeline Technology and Security Conference (NIPITECS) held in Abuja.

A statement by his company in Lagos on Wednesday quoted Azudialu-Obiejesi as saying that the step would boost power generation output to 20,000 megawatts needed to drive the industrialisation that would spur the nation’s economic development.

According to him, the current method of using domestic gas cylinders is outdated and has been scrapped in industrialised nations.

“Nigeria, with its abundant reserves of petroleum and gas, stands on the threshold of its own industrial revolution.

“To kick-start this industrialisation, we must not only extract these resources in the most efficient manner, but also refine and deliver them efficiently and in a secure and cost effective manner,” he said.

The chief executive said that investment in more pipelines by the government would help to eliminate dangerous exposure suffered by the general populace when oil and gas were evacuated through road transportation.

He expressed regret about the material cost, dilapidation of roads and great havoc caused in the past couple of months by road transportation of petroleum products following the explosion of petroleum tankers in Lagos and Nasarawa states.

“When the proper pipeline network exists and runs reliably, products are always delivered on time, eliminating the need to build hundreds of storage/holding facilities all over the country,” he said.

He listed vandalism, sabotage, ageing and integrity issues as posing great challenges to construction, maintenance and operation of the existing pipelines in the country.

According to him, interference, sabotage and vandalism have resulted in oil spills with the attendant environmental, health and safety implications as well as negative impact on agricultural and fishing activities.

Commenting on the government’s new approach to make award of major pipeline projects to be contractor-financed, Azudialu-Obiejesi said that the funding of these projects was a very big limiting factor for Nigerian Engineering, Procurement and Construction and Commissioning (EPCC) companies.

According to him, the local companies face bigger challenges raising fund for EPCC pipeline projects compared with the level of struggle for fund to finance projects by the Federal Government.

“Considering the age, state and exposure of our pipeline infrastructure, there should be concrete plans for replacement with better designed, constructed and secured pipelines utilising modern methods and technologies,” he said.

He urged the government to ensure security, reliability and continuous operation of the nation’s pipeline network by addressing the issues of criminality, sabotage and vandalism.

He also called on government to create enabling environment to grow pipeline networks as expatriate companies would never do it for Nigeria.

“Pipeline construction companies should desist from unhealthy competition and negativity such as writing negative and potentially destructive lies about each other in the media, thereby destroying the image of Nigeria both locally and internationally,” the chairman said. (NAN)

  • NiMet targets 1,000 weather stations across Nigeria in 4 years – DG

NiMet targets 1,000 weather stations across Nigeria in 4 years – DG
    Stations
    By Sumaila Ogbaje
Abuja, Sept. 19 2018 (NAN) The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) says it is targeting to have at least 1,000 weather stations in the country in the next four years.
The Director General of NiMet Prof. Sani Mashi disclosed this while receiving the Secretary General, World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Mr. Pereri Taalas, on Wednesday in Abuja.
Mashi said although the agency needed just about 9,000 weather stations to effectively cover the entire country due to the huge landmass, he was targeting 1,000 stations within his four year tenure in office.
He said he met 54 weather stations upon assumption of office over a year ago, adding that the number had grown to over 100 stations.
According to him, NiMet functions not only in providing meteorological services to aviation but to other sectors such as agriculture, oil and gas and marine sectors.
“NiMet is expected to have not less than 1,000 meteorological stations before the end of my four year tenure in office.
“We have in the last one year established a number of stations in different parts of the country through partnership with educational institutions.
“I inherited 54 stations in 2017 when I assumed office but we are already moving close to 200 to be attained before the end of the year,” he said.
Mashi told the WMO scribe that the policy thrust of his administration was the improvement in the management and technical infrastructure as well as capacity building and enhancement of capability.
He said that aviation had been the major consumer of NiMet services, adding that the agency had recently moved towards addressing the meteorological needs in the agricultural sector since a vast majority of Nigerians were farmers.
Responding, Taalas said there was the need to strengthen the capacity and capability of the agency by the government to be able mitigate the impact of climate change.
He commended the expertise of NiMet in recent times with the support of the WMO.
According to him, temperature has been rising because there is 1.1°c degrees Celsius and that shows that there is need for stronger meteorological and hydrological services and also stronger WMO.
“There is more and more WMO expertise and national meteorological services.
“Unfortunately, Africa is the most sensitive region when it comes to the impact of climate change and many African countries are highly dependent on agriculture.
“And so there is need to strengthening our service agencies as we have seen here because you are a good example of sustainable organisation in terms of service capability of WMO,” he said. (NAN)

  • BMO lauds Ecological Fund Office over commissioning of 70 intervention projects

    By Emmanuel Mogbede

    Commendation

Abuja, Sept. 19, 2018 (NAN) The Buhari Media Organisation (BMO) has commended the Ecological Fund Office as it embarks on the commissioning of about 70 ecological intervention projects in communities across the country`s six geo-political zones.

The organisation in a statement signed by its Chairman, Mr Niyi Akinsiju, and Secretary, Cassidy Madueke, on Wednesday in Abuja, said the projects worth billions of Naira were approved for implementation by President Muhammadu Buhari.

This, Akinsiju said, was in order to end the devastation and subsequent suffering caused by desertification, gully erosion and flooding in specific locations and communities across the country.

He said the interventions by the Ecological Fund Office in affected communities had solved problems that had given concern to citizens whose means of livelihood and properties were threatened by or lost to desertification, flooding and disastrous gully erosion.

He noted that in some of the benefiting communities, towns and villages where hundreds of people lived were saved from devastation by the interventions, thereby safeguarding the well being of the residents.

“Already, some projects have been commissioned in Nasarawa and Akwa Ibom States, the locations of the projects reflect the diversity and spread of the interventions.

“In Nasarawa town of Nasarawa State, a 2.5 kilometre drainage to control gully erosion and road improvement projects were executed,“ the chairman said.

He said that both projects were commissioned by the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Alhaji Abubakar Malami, on behalf of President Buhari.

He said that in Akwa Ibom, four roads and drainage networks to check flooding in Ekot Ekpene were commissioned by the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr Okechukwu Enelamah on Sept. 13.

Akinsiju said the Minister also commissioned a drainage project which diverted a stream that was causing flooding in the community, thereby addressing issues of perennial flooding and gully erosion.

According to him, the Federal Government awarded contracts for the projects which were completed in January 2018 in June 2017 at the cost of N451 million.(NAN)

Foundation decries spread of drug abuse among primary school pupils

    Drugs
    By Mohammed Lawal
Zaria (Kaduna State), Sept. 19, 2018 (NAN) Sheik Lawal Yusuf-Muduru, Founder, Nigas Rehabilitation and Skills Acquisition Foundation Centre, Kaduna State on Wednesday decried the spread of drug abuse among primary school pupils.

Yusuf-Muduru, the Coordinator of the Centre, also known as  Malam Niga, made the observation in a paper titled: “Drugs and Drug Abuses with Reference to Youth” during a public lecture at the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) main campus, Samaru, Zaria, Kaduna State.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the lecture, which was in honour of late Dr Yusuf Bala Usman, was organised by the Students Historical Society of Nigeria, ABU, Zaria.

“It is worrisome to note that the menace of drug abuse has spread to primary school, where primary three pupils are now engaged in taking hard drugs.

“If this situation continues and not properly checked, it  will adversely affect the future of our children and indeed the future of Nigeria because children are the leaders of tomorrow.

“The best way to tackle the menace is to ensure synergy between government, parents, schools, and all other stakeholders to effectively address the problem.

“There are some people from outside who don’t want Africa to develop, hence the manufacturing and distribution of hard drugs to our continent.”

Yusuf-Muduru stressed the need for leaders in Africa do everything possible to avoid the influx of such drugs into the continent and advised that every African president must endeavour to resist all attempts by drug pushers into his country.

He faulted the seven years jail term introduced by Kaduna State government on those found guilty of drug abuse, advising that the victims should have been taken to rehabilitation centres for treatment, medication and reformation.

“Government should not rely on seven years jail term as the best solution to the menace, these drug abusers can be reformed if proper care is given to them and such care can only be found in rehabilitation centres.

“I want to use this medium to appeal to local, state and federal governments to come to the aid of centres such as ours.

“Particularly Kaduna State government, let them come in and collaborate with us, so that they can provide take-off grant and take-off kids to the reformed drug-addicts to enable them get something doing after leaving the centre,” he advocated.

The coordinator lamented that some parents would drop their children in the centre without any money or physical thing to help to take care of the children.

He said that as a philanthropist, he would continue with his reformatory assistance and skills acquisition training for those in the centre.

He said that so far, the centre had trained over 2,500 youths in  skills including carpentering, wielding, computer literacy, liquid detergent making, sewing, tailoring, barbing salon and mobile  phone repairs among others.

Yusuf-Muduru said that the centre, which was established in 2006, was now hosting 174 youths from across Nigeria who were undergoing treatment, medication, reformation and  receiving training on different skills.

“Many of these reformed youths have now become self reliant, because from our research, we understand that some youths engaged in drug abuse due to lack of job and poverty.”

Prof. Alkasum Abba, former Vice-Chancellors, Adamawa State University, described the late Bala, an academician as a first class public educator, outstanding administrator, a courageous and transparent man.

Represented by Prof. Abdullahi Adamu of History Department, ABU, Abba said late Bala, who lived from 1945 to 2005 was a distinguished academician, a remarkable teacher, a profound researcher and a prolific writer.

He said Bala was a sibling of two important and respected royal families in Northern Nigeria, adding that his father was the son of famous Emir of Katsina, Alhaji Muhammadu Dikko, while his mother was the daughter of famous Emir of Kano, Alhaji Abdullahi Bayero.

Abba said Bala’s ancestors fought in the 19th Century to bring about social transformation rooted in the Islamic philosophy of justice and fairness, through the establishment of Sokoto Caliphate.

The Head of History Department, Dr M. S. Umar also eulogised the legacies of Bala as an outstanding international giant.

While congratulating the history students for organising the programme, the HOD observed that the history of late academician per excellence was about to be forgotten.

Earlier, the President, Students Historical Society of Nigeria, Mr Dangana Salim-Ayuba described Bala as a father, mentor, nation builder and a man who transformed the history department to its present status.

He said that even though the present students of the department were not so lucky to meet him physically, they were happy to tap from his wealth of academic legacies.

The president encouraged the students to work hard toward attaining pinnacle in their respective fields of chosen career.

The students presented awards of excellence to Malam Niga and other dignitaries at the ceremony. (NAN)
