    Arms
    By Sunday Bassey
Uyo, Sept. 27, 2018 (NAN) The Akwa Ibom Commissioner of Police, Mr Adeyemi Ogunjemilusi, said on Thursday that over 100 youths had surrendered their arms in the troubled Ukanafun and Etim Ekpo Local Government Areas of Akwa Ibom.

Ogunjemilusi made the disclosure during an interactive session with newsmen in Uyo.

He noted that the police command was doing everything possible to ensure peace and stability in the local government areas.

According to him, the youth started surrendering their arms since Monday. Sept. 24.

“As I speak with you, we have recorded over 100 youths surrendering their arms and they have agreed to documentation. We have profiled them,’’ Ogunjemilusi said.

The commissioner said that the police was in a peace process and disarmament of the youth in those local governments.

“His Excellency has agreed to set the ball of reconciliation rolling and we are in the process of reconciliation. Many of the aggrieved youths are coming out to surrender their arms,’’ he said.

The commissioner said that the peace process would be concluded in two weeks, adding that the public would soon witness unprecedented peace and security in those local government areas.

“We wish there is improvement in their response and we have been guaranteed by their leaders that they will cooperate fully with us, ‘’ the commissioner said.

Ogunjemilusi, however, said that the crisis started from two cult groups – Vikings and Debalm – who were at each others’ throat and which later degenerated to free- for- all-fight.

He said that the command had trained its personnel on successful investigation and prosecution of crime in the state.

The commissioner called on the public to always give useful information in order to apprehend criminals in the state.

NAN reports that the aggrieved youths assembled at Central School, Ikot Akpankuk, Ukanafun, to surrender their arms for documentation.

NAN also reports that Ukanafun and Etim Ekpo crisis which began about a year ago, had led to hardship, insecurity and loss of lives in the area. (NAN)

  • World Tourism Day: NATOP seeks partnership with FG to boos sector

World Tourism Day: NATOP seeks partnership with FG to boost sector
    By Collins Yakubu-Hammer
    Tourism
Abuja, Sept. 27, 2018 (NAN) As the world celebrate World Tourism Day (WTD), the National Association of Tour Operators (NATOP) seeks partnership with Federal Government to boost the sector and generate more revenues for the overall growth of the country.

Hajiya Bilkisu Abdulsalam, the National President of NATOP, made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Abuja.

The 2018 theme for the WTD is “Tourism and Digital Transformation’’.

It is a day set aside by the United Nation World Tourism Organisation to create awareness on the need to appreciate tourism across the world.

She said it was regrettable that the nationwide strike action by the Nigerian Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress coincided with the WTD.

However, we must continue to celebrate the day, because it is a special day for tour operators and tourism actors across the world.

“We want to use the opportunity to call on government to collaborate with us to move the tourism sector forward and generate more revenue for the country.

“Also, government should create the enabling environment like good road network to tourist sites; provide adequate security in the country to encourage influx of foreign tourists.

“Our job as tour operators is to sell packages to foreigners to motivate them to come to Nigeria for holidays, entertainment and leisure.

“But when the security or safety and infrastructure are not adequate, it is hard to convince them to come to Nigeria; that is why we want the government to partner with us.

“Again, we are appealing to government to visit some sites and do the needful; we cannot do it alone. The country is losing millions of Naira on monthly basis to these challenge,’’ Abdulsalam said.

The NATOP president, who is also the Chief Executive Officer of Bobooi Travel and Tour, said there were beautiful tourist sites in Nigeria, but that Nigerians prefer to go to other countries.

According to her, between 50 and 100 Nigerians are going to South Africa, Switzerland and Dubai for tourism monthly, regretting that people from those countries don’t visit Nigeria.

“The reason is not far fetch; inadequate security and infrastructure to encourage people to visit the tourist sites in Nigeria,’’ she said.

On classification of hotels in the country, the NATOP president said it was one of the major challenges facing the growth of the tourism sector.

“We cannot come out to say this is a three, four, five or seven star hotel; in other countries their hotels are classified alongside their prices.

“Before I send a client to any country, I let them know the classification and price rate of the different hotels. But in Nigeria we do not have such or a criteria to classify them.

“If government can collaborate with NATOP, we can set up a programme to check into these hotels, asses them and classify them accordingly; this will put them in the global map of tourism and hospitality.

“But the absent of classification is also affecting our hotels. Hotel owners have their own association and they pay tax. The different owners can confess to you the low level of patronage.

“Also, Minister of Tourism and Chief Executive Officers of tourism parastatals should avoid sending representatives to tourism events; they should come, listen to us and do the needful for the sector to move forward.’’

NAN reports that the nationwide strike by workers has affected this year’s WTD celebration in Abuja as the Ministry of Tourism, Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation and other tourism and culture related agencies remain shut.

However, offices of NATOP, Federation of Tourism Associations of Nigeria and other private sector operators in the sector remain open for normal services. (NAN)

Strike: TUC satisfied with level of compliance in Kwara
    By Usman Aliyu
    Compliance
Ilorin, Sept. 27, 2018 (NAN) The Kwara chapter of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) on Thursday expressed satisfaction with the level of compliance to the industrial action embarked upon by the national body of the union.

Mr Nasir Olumoh, the state TUC Chairman, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ilorin that there would be more compliance in subsequent days.

The union leader urged workers in the state to stay at home to avoid embarrassment from the officials of the union.

“I said earlier that we have instructed all workers to stay at home.

“There is no need coming to work and wasting their little hard earned money.

“We have members and executives who are very supportive. We have mobilised them to move round and ensure that all offices are under locked and key,” he said.

On the refusal of bank workers to join the strike, Olumoh promised to ensure that the staff observed the industrial action in the days to come.

According to him, the union has sent a message to the national secretariat of the body controlling the affairs of bank workers.

He also hailed the workers of the telecommunications operators and Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) for complying with the directive of the NLC and TUC.

NAN reports that the officials of the two unions went round to enforce compliance with the nationwide industrial action in Ilorin.

A NAN correspondent monitoring the strike reports that some workers particularly civil servants resumed for work but were later chased out of their offices by the union officials.

The unions later put the state secretariat and the governor’s office under lock and key. (NAN)

  • Ekiti governorship: Tribunal rules on ballot papers recount Saturday

Ekiti governorship: Tribunal rules on ballot papers recount Saturday

    Ballot

    By Alexandra Oladipo

Abuja, Sept.27(NAN)The Ekiti Governorship Election Tribunal, sitting in Abuja, will on Saturday, Sept. 29  rule on the application filed by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), seeking recount of the ballot papers used for the July 14 governorship election in Ekiti.

The PDP and its candidate, Prof. Olusola Kolapo, had dragged the respondents to the tribunal challenging the outcome of the governorship election.

The respondents are the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the winner of the election, Kayode Fayemi.

The tribunal chairman, Justice Bolaji Belgore, adjourned until Sept.29, after listening to the arguments of counsel.

The petitioners’ counsel, Sunday Olowolafe (SAN), urged the tribunal to grant the application because “it has the inherent powers to do so.’’

Accounting to him, the ballot papers are relevant for the purpose of maintaining the case of the petitioners.

He said granting the petitioners’ prayers would strengthen Nigeria’s democracy as well as its electoral jurisprudence.

INEC’s counsel, Chief Charles Uwensuyi (SAN),in his response, said that recounting the ballot papers was the responsibility of the  electoral body.

He stated that the petitioners had not established that they have a right to recount the ballot papers, adding that the idea behind the application is strange to law.

The INEC counsel noted that though the ballot papers were relevant, they ought to be admitted first before the tribunal can act on them.

He argued that the petitioners’ application sought to bypass the Practice Direction and urged the tribunal to dismiss it.

Other counsel in the respondents’ team aligned themselves with the submission of INEC counsel. NAN)

  • Filling stations in Abuja shun strike, dispense fuel to customers

    Strike
    By Edith Ike- Eboh
Abuja, Sept. 27, 2018 (NAN) Most fuel stations in Abuja shunned the call to shut down operations in compliance with the directive of organised labour for workers in Nigeria to embark on a warning strike over agitations for a new minimum wage.
News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that both major marketers and independent oil marketers opened their stations to customers.
Also, all petrol stations owned by Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and its affiliates also dispensed fuel to customers on Thursday, the first day of the strike.
Some of the stations along Kubwa expressway, including Connoil, MRS, Mobil, Ole oil, Total, Shema and AA Rano, were open for business.
A manager at AA Rano, who pleaded to remain anonymous, said that the station did not receive any instruction concerning the strike.
“Nobody told us anything about the strike, so, we have to continue our normal activities.
“We work under instructions and if we get one to join the strike, we will definitely obey our boss,’’ the manager said.
At the Central Business District, the NNPC mega-station, Connoil and Mobil filling stations were equally dispensing fuel to customers.
However, Mr Fredrick Iguma, a taxi driver, said, “ the strike is already affecting my business. The town is just dry. You know when there is no work; we don’t have people to patronise us.
“ It will be good for government to listen to what the labour union is saying. This strike is not good for the country.
“ The next thing now, there will be fuel supply shortage and queues will start building up at the filling stations.’’
Also, along the airport road most stations opened for business.
Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) directed members of all affiliate unions to commence a nationwide strike on Thursday
The NLC President, Ayuba Wabba, said the industrial action would commence due to the refusal of the Federal Government to reconvene the meeting of the tripartite National Minimum Wage Committee to enable it to conclude its work.
He said: “In compliance with this mandate, all workers and private sector at all levels across the country have been directed to comply.
“All public and private institutions, offices, banks, schools, public and private business premises, including filling stations, are to remain shut till further notice,” Wabba said at a news conference in Abuja on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, NNPC urged Nigerian to avoid panic buying of petroleum products because of the strike.
Dr Maikanti Baru the Group Managing Director of NNPC, said the corporation had 37 days petrol stock to serve the needs of consumers across the country. (NAN)

  • ‎NMA distances self from warning strike

    Strike

    ‎

    By Reporters ‎

Bauchi, September 27, 2018 (NAN) The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) Bauchi  State chapter, has distanced itself from Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) nationwide strike that commenced on Thursday.

    ‎

Dr Lamara Dottijo the Chairman of the Chapter disclosed this in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Bauchi on Thursday, adding that that the association was not part of NLC.

    ‎

“Our members are not participating in the nationwide strike embarked upon by NLC because we are not part of them.

    ‎

“Besides that, we will not allow hospitals across the state to be shut down, there are pressing health issues with citizens,” he said

    ‎

Dottijo stressed that his members were available for consultations in all the health facilities across the state.

    ‎

“The NMA wishes to inform the public, especially our esteemed patients that doctors are not on strike and will be available for consultations in all the health facilities in the state.

    ‎

“We call on management of all hospitals to support doctors as they continue to render services to patients, by ensuring safety of doctors, access to equipment and clinics.

    ‎

“We also urge all our members across the state to continue to render selfless services to our patients in spite the ongoing strike by other health workers in the state.

He called on the Federal Government and NLC to come to terms and settle the problems amicably.

    ‎

“We are calling on government to toe the path of truth and call a spade a spade to bring to an end of this unnecessary strike.“

    ‎

Checks by NAN in majority of the hospitals in the state capital showed that doctors and other health workers were seen attending to patients while Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, Bauchi and the specialist hospital recorded full and normal activities.

    ‎

However, the Chairman, Joint Health Sector Union (JOHESU) Bauchi state chapter, told NAN that the union was in total support of the strike.

    ‎

“Our members have joined the NLC strike fully, so all our members are on strike until we hear from the leadership of the labour congres,” he said.

The NLC Chairman in the state, Mr Hashimu Gital, said the strike was successful in the area.

    ‎

“There is compliance by workers in the state, the workers have all stayed back in their houses to comply with the NLC directive on the strike,” Gital said

The Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), Katsina state chapter said the 12 local government areas in the North senatorial district of the state had also joined the strike.

Malam Habibu Bala the Daura Local Government Area of the state  chairman of  NULGE, told NAN the councils had their offices and departments closed in compliance with the directive of NLC on the issue.

He said workers would remain at home pending further directive from NLC, stressing, “we were strictly monitoring the level of compliance through unscheduled visits to offices, schools and departments.“

Bala appealed to the Federal Government and NLC to ensure timely and amicable resolution to the problem.

“The only panacea to this imbroglio is for the government to honour the earlier demand of the union by working out a feasible minimum wage for the Nigerian workers,“ he said.

He lamented that the urrent N18,000 minimum wage was out dated, especially considering the inflationary trend, stressing that it was far from meeting the economic reality on the ground.

Madam Grace Abo, a market woman in Daura, also called on Federal Government to hasten resolution on the matter with a view to achieving a lasting industrial harmony nationwide.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that all government offices, excluding those on essential services like security agencies, were shutdown with only shops, markets and filling stations operating.

  • Workers in Lagos, Ebonyi, Kogi, FCT comply with strike

Workers in Lagos, Ebonyi, Kogi and FCT comply with strike

    By Reporters
Abuja, Sept. 26, 2018 (NAN) Activities in some banks, government offices, post offices, public schools and other essential services in some states have grounded following organised labour directive for workers to go strike due to non-negotiation of Minimum Wage.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) correspondents who monitored activities in states such as Lagos, Ebonyi, Kogi and Federal Capital Territory, on Thursday observed that virtually all the establishments in these states were closed in compliance with directive.

NAN reports that labour demanded N65, 000 national minimum wage up from the current N18,000, which was subject to negotiation by a 30-man tripartite National Minimum Wage Committee set up by the Federal Government in November 2017.

The compliance with the strike in Lagos, showed that the enforcement teams of the organised labour set out from Ikeja to the State Secretariat, Alausa, at about 7:20 am and workers were stopped from entering their offices.

Banks such as UBA and Wema along the Lagos-Ibadan Express Way on Alimosho road were closed for business.

The enforcement team of the Association of Senior Staff of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institutions (ASSBIFI) led by its President, Oyinkan Olasanoye prevented staff from gaining access to Stanbic IBTC Bank, Ikeja branch.

The ASSBIFI team stormed Polaris Bank (former Skye Bank), on Awolowo Way, Ikeja, as its entrance gate was locked by the union, while workers and customers were prevented from accessing the premises.

Olasanoye said that the enforcement was in compliance with the directive of the TUC, the labour centre to which ASSBIFI was affiliated.

She had on Wednesday at a news conference told journalists that ASSBIFI had dispatched letters to all its members in banks across the country to join the strike

However, Access Bank in Dopemu and First Bank in Iyana- Ipaja opened for business with many customers attempting to make one transaction or another.

Meanwhile, filling stations are dispensing fuel to customers, and the roads are busy with the usual heavy traffic from Iyana-Ipaja to Ikeja..

In Abakaliki, capital of Ebonyi, activities in some banks, the courts, public schools and government establishments were brought to a halt over NLC strike directive.

A bank staff, who pleaded on anonymity, told NAN that they only heard the information on air as the circular had not been distributed.

“We only heard the information on radio but the circular is yet to arrive at the bank,’’ he said.

However, at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki (FETHA), doctors, nurses and other health workers at the hospital complex were at their various duty posts attending to patients.

Also a staff at the hospital, who preferred anonymity told NAN that they were yet to get directive.

“We are still at our duty posts at the moment, until we get signal,” he said.

NAN visited the High Courts at Abakaliki and Obiozora headquarters of Ohaozara Local Government Area of the state where the circular was pasted.

In Kogi, government workers stayed away from the State Scretariat Complex, Phase 2 in Lokoja, in compliance with the directive of the unions to embark on a nationwide strike.

The two buildings, which housed most of the government ministries, were abandoned as very few workers were seen in the premises.

One of the workers, a director, who spoke to NAN on condition of anonymity, said he came to the office because he was a management staff and could not partake in the strike.

“Even though we are in total support of the strike because it is justifiable, as a management staff we must come to the office.

“We are appealing to the state and federal government to do the needful by reconvening the tripartite committee as being demanded by the unions,” he said.

He urged the Federal Government to go back to the drawing board with the organised labour unions and do the right thing, saying workers were like babies in the hand of the government.

Another worker, Mr Matthew Olalekan, told NAN that the strike witnessed full compliance in Kogi because the organised labour in the state had given them directive to join the strike.

“Nigerian workers have suffered enough, our salary is nothing to write home about because of high rate of inflation, and our children are out of school due to poor wages,” Olalekan said.

NAN reports that teachers of public schools in Kogi were also participating in the strike as schools were closed down, and some students who came to school went back home.

Local government workers also stayed away from their offices as no worker was seen on the premises, except security personnel.

However, the commercial banks in the confluence city have their doors opened to render services to their customers.

A student of Government Science Secondary School, Lokoja, Collins Usman, told NAN that one of their school gates was opened, but the security personnel denied them access to the school premises.

“The security men told us to go back home that there was no teacher on ground to teach us, that they are on strike,” Usman said.

At the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Bwari Council, many customers were disappointed that their banks did not allow them access into their banks.

NAN correspondent who went round the town to observed that all the banks in the area had their gates shut while workers operated within.

However, ATMs services in the town were function but the queues were long because customers could not gain access to the banks.

Also the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) Headquarters was not completely shut as senior staff of the board were seen entering the premises to work.

However, Bwari Area Council Secretariat was closed as few staff and security operatives were outside chatting away. (NAN)
