The Chairman of Air Peace, Mr Allen Onyema, gave the assurance in a statement issued on Thursday in Lagos.

Onyema urged staff of the airline to gear up to raise the bar of flight services to the travelling public in 2019.

The chairman commended the travelling public for preferring Air Peace and staying loyal to its brand in 2018.

He attributed the success of the airline in four years to the unflinching support its customers, pledging that the carrier would spare nothing in making their experience truly rewarding, exciting and safe.

“2018 was both challenging and exciting for us. It was the year we upped our record of firsts.

“In the year under review, we launched a number of domestic and regional routes under our no-city-left-behind project on the platform of our subsidiary, Air Peace Hopper.

“We also made history as the first domestic airline to acquire and register the Boeing 777 aircraft in Nigeria. We have so far acquired four Boeing 777s, with two already delivered.

“We also successfully renewed our International Air Transport Association Operational Safety Audit (IOSA) certificate and Air Operator Certificate (AOC) after a very rigorous process.

” We also diversified the aircraft in our fleet with the inclusion of six 50-seater Embraer 145 jets, which have so far helped our yuletide operations in no small way,”Onyema said.

According to him, the airline in September signed a deal with American plane maker, Boeing, for the delivery of 10 brand new Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft, making Air Peace the first to achieve the feat on the West Coast of Africa.

“We are sincerely grateful to our loyal customers without whose support, preference for our brand and patronage we could not have made a success of the target we set for ourselves in 2018.

” It was quite a challenging year too, given the dire economic situation across the world, but our esteemed customers supported us through it all.

“In 2019, we are going to implement a series of bolder decisions aimed at giving the flying public a truly exciting experience.

” Already, we have begun the expansion of our flight operations to the Murtala Muhammed Airport 2 (MMA2) in response to our customers’ wish for a better space to serve them.

“This becomes effective Jan. 2, 2019 with the operation of our Lagos-Akure, Lagos-Asaba, Lagos-Kaduna and Lagos-Port Harcourt NAF Base services from the facility.

” All flights under our subsidiary, Air Peace Hopper will eventually be moved to MMA2,”he said.

    Onyema said Air Peace was
also going to give the flying public a reliable, safe, affordable and comfortable alternative on some international routes, including Dubai, Sharjah, Guangzhou-China, Mumbai, London, Houston and Johannesburg.

” Our staff have been wonderful with their commitment and dedication to duty through the years, but 2019 is one year all hands must be on the deck.

“This is to enable us give our customers the best flight experience on the domestic, regional and international routes and make our dear country, Nigeria and West Africa truly proud in the global aviation industry,” he said. (NAN)

  • Educationist urges LASG to build more schools

    Schools
    By Josephine Obute
Lagos, Dec. 27, 2018 (NAN) Mrs Patricia Nwabuwa,  a retired immediate Education Director in Lagos State, has advocated for decongestion of schools in the State by building more public schools.

Nwabuwa made the call in an interview with told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on the sidelines of her retirement, also known as “Pens-Down’’ and thanksgiving held in her honour at Ijegun, a suburb of Lagos State.

The former President of Rotary Club International, Nigeria said more schools should be built to decongest the already existing ones.

“In terms of the location, there are some areas in the state without schools at all and children should go to schools nearest to them.

“Because of this lack of schools in proximity, students trek very long distances to get to their schools,’’ the retired director said.

She said that more parents were embracing government schools because they wanted their children to enjoy the free education offered by the State.

Nwabuwa described Lagos as a State that allows level playing ground for all stakeholders without any form of discrimination in students’ admission or recruitment of staff.

“The State is an everyman’s land because it ensures everyone has an equal chance in terms of admission of students into schools and recruitment of staff.’’

She commended the state government for prompt payment of workers’ salaries.

She described her experience as a teacher as great and worthwhile working with the State, adding that it was also quite stressful as a principal and an accounting officer to the school.

Nwabuwa listed some challenges that confronted her while serving as a school principal to include having to manage a very high population of children that outnumbered the staff.

“A major challenge in our schools is the overpopulation of students in classes, yet the principals must manage,’’ she told NAN.

She recently retired as the Principal of Sasa Community Senior High School, Egbeda, after serving in several schools in the state for 35 years. (NAN)

  • Next APC administration to tackle infrastructure deficit in Lagos, says Dep. Governorship candidate

    Infrastructure
Lagos, Dec. 27, 2018 (NAN) Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, APC Deputy Governorship Candidate in Lagos state, has said that the party will address the infrastructure deficit in the area, if re-elected into power in 2019.
Hamzat, a former Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, said this at the annual lecture of the Lagos chapter of the Nigerian Institution of Civil Engineers (NICE) on Thursday.
He said that bridging the infrastructure deficit would help to enhance  the living standard of Lagos residents.
He spoke on the theme, “Bridging the infrastructure gap, the Lagos we know,” said, ” the next APC administration in the state will bridge the existing infrastructure gap.”
He said that building and preserving a mega city, such as Lagos, posed great challenges.
Hamzat, who was the guest speaker at the event, said that to meet the infrastructure need of the state required stronger financial base and innovations.
He said: “The sheer size of funding required in sustaining the infrastructure needs of the city is beyond what a government can unilaterally provide.
“This is where innovation comes in and that is what the APC government will do when we come into power in 2019 by the grace of God and goodwill of all Lagosians.
“The Public Private Partnership (PPP) involvement in the governance will not be an exception,” he said, adding that the next administration would partner with professional bodies and business communities, among others where necessary.
Hamzat further promised that the next APC government would provide more infrastructure and improve on the existing ones to support private businesses and increase the productivity of the people.
He said that there an urgent need to re-position Lagos as the ultimate investment destination for foreign businesses.
He said that Foreign Direct Investment was one of the main drivers for creating and sustaining a vibrant economy.
The APC chieftain further said that the plan of the next administration would be to build an Inter-Modal Transport System by integrating road, rail and water transportation to tackle the problem of transportstion within the Lagos metropolis.
Also, Mr Robbie Owivry, former National Chairman of NICE, said that PPP scheme remained the answer to the nations’ infrastructure and housing gaps.
Owivry also said that government alone could not fix the infrastructure and housing gaps, adding that the project required the participation of the private sector.
He said, “To develop and promote PPP in the provision of infrastructure, there is a need to consider prerequisites and measures to help such partnerships to be effective and produce valuable results.
“There is a need for the creation of a more attractive, open and robust environment that encourages private investment by creating predictability in the procurement process.”
Owivry said that government needed to win investors’ confidence by respecting contractual agreements with private firms.
He further urged the government to provide special incentives and reliefs to encourage private investments, adding that confidence drives investments in any economy.
He advised that PPP on infrastructure financing should be done through a policy that would offer loans to local businesses at low interest rates.
Earlier, Mrs Lola Adetona, the state Chairman of NICE, said that they were ready to partner with the various governments to develop the nation’s infrastructure needs.
Adetona regretted that most Nigerians preferred to deal with foreign engineers, thereby undermining the competence and capabilities of the Nigerian engineers.
She said that more than 80 per cent of construction work were being given to foreign contractors and engineers at the expense of the indigenous ones.
She said, “Indigenous operators particularly in the construction industry have the capability and competence to deliver as good as the foreign ones, if patronised and encouraged.
“Normally, construction work and contracts are supposed to be given to foreign contractors only when there is no indigenous professional that has the competence to do such work,” Adetona said. (NAN)

    SMEs
    By Lucy Nwachukwu
Abuja, Dec.  27, 2018 (NAN) The African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) has signed an agreement with the African Guarantee Fund (AGF) for a 30 million dollar re-guarantee facility to support African Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs).

The Director, Trade Finance of Afreximbank, Mr Gwen Mwaba, in a statement on Thursday said the facility would help the SMEs in the trade value chain to access funds for their activities.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the agreement provides for the facility to be used to support the financing needs of African SMEs.

This is aimed at enhancing their access to long term financing, thereby acting as a catalyst to enable them to grow, create more jobs, sustain the existing labour force and develop intra-African and extra-African trade.

According to Mwaba, the re-guarantee facility is aimed at providing comfort to financial institutions in lending to SMEs, which tend to be regarded as a risky segment.

He said that it would enable the financial institutions to transform their short term deposits into long term financing to SMEs.

He said that it would also support Afreximbank’s SME support initiative and AGF strategic plan.

“The facility is expected to support positive social-economic changes among the more than 6,000 SMEs that are expected to gain access to guaranteed loans from African local banks.

“It will thereby contribute to trade development, economic growth and poverty reduction in the continent,” Mwaba said. (NAN)
