  • NAF airstrikes knockout terrorists’ camps in Kaduna, Katsina

    Airstrikes

    By Sumaila Ogbaje

Abuja, June 4, 2024 (NAN) The Nigerian Air Force (NAF), says the Air Component of Operation Whirl Punch and Hadarin Daji have eliminated terrorists’ enclaves killing scores in Kaduna and Katsina States.

This is contained in a statement by the Director, Public Relations and Information, NAF, AVM Edward Gabkwet, on Tuesday in Abuja.

Gabkwet said the air strikes by the Air Component of Operation Whirl Punch on terrorists’ enclave in Giwa Local Government Area of Kaduna State between May 30 and May 31, yielded the requisite outcome.

He said the strikes were executed at the stronghold of the infamous terrorist, Buharinyadi, situated at Bula Forest area in Giwa LGA of the state.

The strikes, he said, prompted by painstaking Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance (IRS) operations conducted in the targeted vicinity where several clusters of thatched roofed huts within compounds were observed amid thick vegetation.

Gabkwet said the surveillance also confirmed a substantial presence of armed terrorists loitering around the huts and over 13 motorcycles seen tucked under a large umbrella tree.

He added that a targeted exploitation of multiple sources revealed that the terrorists at the location were responsible for most of the attacks and kidnappings in several communities within Birnin Gwari, Igabi and Giwa LGAs.

“Accordingly, the Air Component dispatched its available air assets to strike the location.

“Overhead the location, scores of the terrorists were sighted and subsequently struck, bringing effective and maximum damage on the targets and their equipment.

“Following a tip that some of the surviving terrorists had relocated 500 meters west of the interdicted location, a follow up strike was immediately conducted, with a post-strike Battle Damage Assessment revealing the neutralisation of several terrorists and their hideouts engulfed in flames,” he said.

The NAF spokesman said that similar air strikes were also carried out by the Air Component of Operation Hadarin Daji on June 2, at Zango Hill in Kankara LGA of Katsina State.

He said that intelligence revealed that the location which had a cluster of huts and zinc roofed structures with multiple human and livestock movements, was being used by a terrorists’ kingpin, Alhaji Iliya and his cohorts.

Gwabket said that air interdiction was conducted over the location to decimate the terrorists, destroy their weapons and mobility.

“After the strike, Battle Damage Assessment footages and feedback received revealed that the strikes were successful as several terrorists were eliminated and their structures engulfed in flames.

“The NAF, in collaboration with surface forces, will continue to sustain domination of the battlespace through extensive situational awareness, constant patrols, and targeted interdiction of terrorists’ safe havens within its various Areas of Responsibility.

“Still, a whole of society approach remains a key factor in the ongoing efforts to minimise the threats posed by criminal elements,” he said. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Umar said that application of the new method would also deal with the pest resistant to chemicals.
“We targeted 60,000 farmers between Kano and Kaduna, after the training for twelve months, we would move to other states for similar exercise.
“The IPM is coordinated for a greater Tuta management both environmentally and economically, enhance farmer access to finance and market, to enable them to scale up their businesses,” he said.

Be beacons of hope, justice that society needs, Judge urges legal officers

    Hope

    By Folasade Akpan

Abuja, June 3, 2024 (NAN) Justice Husseini Yusuf, the Chief Judge of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has urged legal officers to be the beacons of hope and justice the Nigerian society needs.

Yusuf gave the counsel in Abuja at the opening ceremony of a training workshop for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Legal Officers.

The workshop had the theme: “Optimising the Capacity of Legal Officers for Organisational Compliance with Statutory Provisions”.

Yusuf, who was represented by Justice Njideka Nwosu-lheme, emphasised the vital role the NYSC legal officers play in upholding the integrity of the legal system.

“Your duty goes beyond legal representation. You are the champions of human rights, defenders of the vulnerable and the pillars of our democracy.

“As you undergo this training, I urge you to embrace the values of integrity, compassion and excellence.

“Embrace the challenges and opportunities that come with this noble profession and remember that law is a powerful tool for change.

“You are the guardians of justice whose dedication to the noble profession is crucial in shaping the future of the nation.

“Your expertise could make a meaningful difference in the lives of many as you navigate the complexities of legal practice.

“You should, however, always keep in mind the importance of ethics, professionalism and empathy in the course of discharging your duties,” he said.

The Director-General of NYSC, Brig.-Gen. Yu’shau Ahmed, in a remark, said that the legal unit of the NYSC was established to take care of legal matters.

Ahmed, who was represented by the Director of Procurement, Mr Chukwu Ogbonnaya, said that legal officers had been posted to the states and FCT secretariats to strengthen the unit for optimal performance.

“The take-off of the area offices in January 2020 necessitated the posting of legal officers as part of the full complement of the staff required for the smooth operations of the scheme at the area level.

“Reports reaching me, which I am happy to mention, is that the posting of legal officers has enhanced efficiency in the areas of legal advice, litigation and supervision of the Corps Legal Aid Scheme (CLAS),” he said.

He also said that the instruments guiding the operations and activities of the NYSC were the scheme’s legal frame-work and other applicable statutory provisions.

He added that their advice would guide management at all times in taking decisions, especially at very critical moments, which would largely determine the level and extent of compliance by the scheme, with statutory provisions.

The Director, Legal Services, Mr Christopher Ogar, said that the workshop was organised to enhance the capacity of legal officers in the scheme.

According to Ogar, this is in line with the Nigerian Bar Association and the legal professions’s stance on continuing legal education for lawyers.

“It is also to assemble them from different parts of the country to brainstorm and refresh their legal minds on the rudiments of legal practice, particularly in the area of organisational compliance with statutory provisions,” he said. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Police uncover gang targeting, killing car-hire

    drivers in Rivers

    Arrest

    By Desmond Ejibas

Port Harcourt, June 3, 2024 (NAN) The Police Command in Rivers has arrested some members of a criminal gang suspected to be murdering car-hire drivers and stealing their vehicles.

SP Grace Iringe-Koko, the command’s spokesperson, in a statement in Port Harcourt on Monday, linked the group to multiple cases of drivers that got missing.

She revealed that the arrest of one gang member, Anthony Chima, exposed the sinister activities of the gang in the state.

She stated: “The discovery of this criminal enterprise targeting Uber drivers in the state followed the disappearance of one Oghenevwarhe Barry Akpobome, an Uber driver.

“Upon investigating the disappearance, Police operatives arrested one Anthony Chima, a 35-year-old graduate of Political Science from the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Port Harcourt.

“Under interrogation, Chima confessed to being recruited into a gang that specialised in luring taxi drivers into ambushes and stealing their vehicles,” she stated.

Iringe-Koko said that Chima’s testimony showed the gang’s further gruesome actions of killing the drivers and harvesting their body parts for ritualistic purposes.

“The suspect said that he was introduced into the gang by his friend, Amfoh Abu, the group’s arms dealer, and another individual simply identified as ‘Reason.’

“Investigation further revealed that ‘General Effizy,’ the gang’s leader, is a prominent figure in the Greenland cult and a seasoned kidnapper in the state,” she added.

The police spokesperson said that Chima confessed that he randomly obtains the Uber drivers’ phone numbers and pretends to be a passenger in need of a ride.

She said that on Jan. 10, Chima contacted Akpobome and directed the driver to pick him up at Reason’s residence.

“Disguised as a passenger, Chima lured the unsuspecting Uber driver to a remote area in Aminigboko, where he met Reason and General Effizy along with four-armed gang members.

“The driver was forcefully removed from the vehicle and taken to Effizy’s shrine, where he was tied up, gagged and gruesomely murdered.

“Chima later led the police to the shrine and Effizy’s residence, where personnel recovered the victim’s skull and a locally fabricated Baretta pistol,” she said.

Iringe-Koko said that a manhunt had been launched to capture the fleeing gang members, stating that Chima would face legal actions.

She said that the Commissioner of Police in Rivers, Tunji Disu, has advised Uber drivers to be cautious while picking up or transporting passengers, particularly to remote or potentially dangerous areas.

“The Akpobome incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers that lurk in the shadows, and the importance of vigilance and cooperation with the law enforcement agencies,” the police image maker said. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

  • Prayer for sustainable peace in Nigeria compulsory – Cleric tells pilgrims

    Prayer

    By Muhammad Lawal
Makkah, June 4, 2024 (NAN) An Islamic Cleric, Malam Lukman Hamidu-Yauri, who is a member of ‘Da’awah’ Committee, Kebbi Pilgrims Welfare Board, says prayer for the restoration of peace across Nigeria is sacrosanct.
The cleric disclosed this during a nasiha (enlightenment) session, shortly after Subhi (dawn) prayer in Makkah, Saudi Arabia, on Tuesday.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the morning enlightenment session has now become a routine exercise to educate the pilgrims on rituals of Hajj towards an acceptable pilgrimage.
The cleric observed that prayer for Nigeria was not only important, but compulsory “in view of the critical security challenges bedeviling our dear country.
“We should use this opportunity to consistently pray for peace to reign across Nigeria. We should also pray to Almighty Allah to guide our leaders right, to give them the wisdom to fix the nation’s economy.
“We should also beg God to give them the capacity to be just while steering the affairs of our motherland.
“We must specially pray for our Governor, Dr Nasir Idris, to succeed in Kebbi. He has started well;  we can attest to the fact that the fertilisers he distributed free-of-charge to farmers is a gesture never witnessed in Kebbi.
“I tend to agree with a writer, who recently wrote that we have had many governors in Kebbi before, who actually performed, but Idris supercedes them.
“I believe that each one of you here is a living witness to that fact,” he said.
In his submission, Malam Kabiru Umar-Wasagu, Deputy Imam, Central Mosque, Birnin Kebbi, urged the pilgrims to be patient in all their dealings with one another.
He recalled that without patience, “our noble Prophet Muhammad wouldn’t have succeeded.”
He reminded them that the religion of Islam grew from strength-to-strength due to the patience and resilience of the Holy Prophet and his companions.
The cleric observed that patience was critical to a successful Hajj exercise, hence the need for pilgrims to always imbibe the spirit of tolerance and understanding.
“There is always a need to be our brothers’ keepers,” he declared.
Commenting on pilgrims’ plastic identity card produced by the Saudi authorities, Umar-Wasagu advised them to be patient and orderly, saying that every pilgrim would receive his card in due course
He admonished them to remain close to Islamic clerics and frequently ask questions on grey areas of Hajj exercise. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

  • Strike: NAHCON cautions NLC against disrupting transportation of pilgrims

    Strike

    By Salisu Sani-Idris

Abuja, June 3, 2024 (NAN) The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), has cautioned the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), against disrupting the ongoing transportation of Nigeria pilgrims to Saudi Arabia.

The Assistant Director, Public Affairs, NAHCON, Mrs Fatima Usara, gave the advice in a statement on Monday in Abuja.

Usara also empahaised the need for the NLC to respect the sensitivity of “this divine devotion and not to encroach on its movement”.

“Information reaching NAHCON indicates that there are plans by a section of the NLC to disrupt the ongoing Hajj operations.

“This is coming in spite of the initial understanding that Hajj flights would not be affected.

“The commission appreciates concern of the NLC over the welfare of its members, however, NAHCON wants it to respect the sanctity of Hajj as a religious obligation which Muslims do not take lightly.

“The commission advises NLC to apply caution and not to tamper with the Hajj conveyance as a courtesy to the Muslim faith.

“Disruptive action against the smoothness of the operation will deprive intending muslims their fundamental right to worship considering the limited time left before closure of Jeddah and Madinah airports for the pilgrimage,” the statement added.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that no fewer than 65,500 Nigerians are expected to perform the 2024 pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia.

NAHCON records indicate that the commission has so far transported 38,805 pilgrims to Saudi Arabia in 92 flights. (NAN)
