Abuja, June 6, 2024 (NAN) Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have arrested four intending pilgrims to Saudi Arabia with cocaine consignments in Lagos.

Mr Femi Babafemi, spokesman for the NDLEA, said this in a statement on Thursday in Abuja.

Babafemi said NDLEA operatives had raided Emerald Hotel, Ladipo, Oshodi, Lagos State, on June 5.

He said the intending pilgrims were caught in the act of ingesting wraps of cocaine ahead of their flight to the holy land.

According to him, those arrested during the intelligence-led operation include Usman Kamorudeen, 31; Olasunkanmi Owolabi, 46; Fatai Yekini, 38 and a lady, Ayinla Kemi, 34.

“The four suspects were lodged in two rooms in the hotel where they had prepared 200 pellets of cocaine weighing 2.20 kilograms to swallow when NDLEA officers stormed their rooms.

“100 wraps of the Class A substance were recovered from each of the two rooms bringing the total seizure to 200 wraps. Two suspects were to swallow 100 wraps each,” he said.

Babafemi quoted the NDLEA Chairman, retired Brig.-Gen. Buba Marwa, as commending the commander, officers and men of the Lagos State command who conducted the operation.

Marwa said the agency would continue to spread its dragnet to track, trace and apprehend criminal elements.

This, he said, included those who may want to hide under pilgrimage to carry out their nefarious activities capable of denting the image of the country.

”The Agency will work with our counterparts in Saudi Arabia to ensure that the designated recipients of seized illicit drug consignments in any part of Saudi Arabia are also traced and dealt with accordingly,” he said. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

  • Germany’s Scholz to give government statement on security situation

Germany’s Scholz to give government statement on security situation

    Statement

Berlin, June 6, 2024 (dpa/NAN) German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is set to make a government statement on the country’s current security situation in the lower house of parliament on Thursday.

The statement would be days after he gave the green light for Ukraine to use German weapons to strike targets in Russia.

Scholz is expected to address both his decision to give Kiev more leeway in its use of German-supplied arms and a recent stabbing attack in the south-western city of Mannheim.

He changed course on Ukraine policy after long-held concerns about escalating the conflict with Russia and drawing Germany into the war.

Scholz changed course on Ukraine policy last week to allow the government in Kiev to use German weapons to attack military targets on Russian territory.

This is particularly to defend its second city of Kharkiv, near the Russian border.

The opposition then called on the German leader to explain his sudden reversal.

Left-wing politician Christian Görke said that he would have liked the chancellor to have made a statement last week, instead of announcing lonely decisions to expand the war in Ukraine.

Several other countries, including the U.S., have recently made similar moves to give Ukraine more room for manoeuvre in its use of Western-supplied weapons.

It was specified that they should only be used against targets within Ukraine itself.

Scholz had defended the change of course on Monday and emphasised: “we are certain that it will not contribute to an escalation”.

The U.S. president has also said it was only a matter of being able to defend a major city like Kharkiv, for example.

The decision was carefully made with Germany’s friends and allies, Scholz said.

The chancellor is also likely to address the recent knife attack carried out by a 25-year-old Afghan national during an anti-Islam gathering in Mannheim.

The attack that sparked domestic political debate about security and the threat of extremist violence.

Calls have since been growing for the government to again allow deportations to Afghanistan and Syria. (dpa/NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

  • Do more to protect students, NANS tells ACU authorities

    Protection
    By Ibukun Emiola
Ibadan, June 6, 2024 (NAN) National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has urged the management of Ajayi Crowther University (ACU), Oyo, to do more in protecting its students.

The NANS Senate President, Babatunde Akinteye, stated this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ibadan on Thursday.

NAN reports that a NANS delegation had, on Wednesday, gone to the university on a fact-finding mission on some indents that happened in the institution recently.

NAN also recalled that a female student of the university was allegedly raped by two security personnel within the campus, while another was killed by a group of other students over alleged phone theft.

The 200-level Mechanical Engineering student, Alex Timilehin, was said to have been beaten from 6 p.m. on May 24 to about 6 a.m. on May, 25.

Akinteye, however, said that the association was not satisfied with the measures put in place by the institution’s authorities to prevent such ugly occurrences from happening.

He said though the management had beefed up security in and around the campus, the hostels were still porous.

Akinteye also added that part of the pledges made to NANS by the school authorities was that the the Chief Security Officer (CSO) would be replaced.

“If not for the incidents that happened, we wouldn’t know the lapses on the campus.

“We checked through the hostels and saw that they are still porous. So we told them to improve the hostel facilities.

“We also told them to ensure that security guards are always on ground and that the porters should be inside the hostels during the working hours.

“So, if they are doing shifts, the porter on duty should not leave until the person taking over from him is around,” he said.

The NANS senate president also emphasised the need for re-orientating the students rather than waiting for something bad to happen before taking precautionary measures.

He called on the school authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding the escape of one of the suspects in the killing of the student from the campus.

NAN reports that a total of 25 students of the university were arraigned before an Iyaganku Chief Magistrates’ Court in Ibadan on Wednesday in connection with the killing of their colleague.

NAN also reports that they had since been remanded in a correctional centre, pending the commencement of their trial on July 8.

Akinteye, however, said that the association would push for an amendment to the charges preferred against them.

This, he said, was because none of the students was directly charged with murder of their colleague.

“In the videos circulating, it is clear that some people were beating the victim directly, which eventually led to his death.

“So, the charges shouldn’t be the same for everyone involved in the incident,” he said.

When contacted, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the university, Mr Femi Atoyebi, confirmed that a NANS delegation was on the campus on a fact-finding mission on Wednesday.

He, however, said that the association was satisfied with the steps taken by the institution’s management after they had been briefed by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Timothy Adebayo.

Atoyebi said: “NANS leadership from Abuja and zonal leaders in the South-West came to meet the management of the institution to hear the university’s side of the story.

The vice-chancellor, Prof. Timothy Adebayo, was able to tell them exactly what happened and was able to answer all their questions.

“He specifically told them that the university, as a faith-based school, would never cover up anything and that everything that happened is in the purview of the public. So there’s nothing to hide.”

Atoyebi said that NANS demanded for the list of those arraigned and asked that a thorough autopsy be done on body of the victim so as to can know what exactly happened.

Part of the demands of the NANS delegation, he said, was that the family of the late student be carried along in everything being done by the school authorities.

“They also demanded that the Inspector-General of Police sets up an independent body to investigate the matter.

“These are the issues that the students’ body made and they are things we have already done,” Atoyebi said.

He said while engaging the VC, the association was told that the family was being carried along and that the school had engaged University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, for an autopsy on the body of the student.

On the demand for investigation, Atoyebi said the vice-chancellor told the students’ body that the police had already taken it up, consequent upon which the suspects were arraigned in court on Wednesday.

He also quoted Adebayo as saying that the institution could not release the names of the perpetrators, as it was also part of the suit.

He said the list of the names was with the police and that the NANS officials should contact them for it.

Atoyebi said that after the meeting, the NANS leadership addressed the students at the institution’s main gate without any violence and was also conducted round the hostels.

“They saw transparency in all the management has done,” he said. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

  • Germany’s Scholz promises aid for recent flood victims

Germany’s Scholz promises aid for recent flood victims

    Flood

Berlin, June 6, 2024 (dpa/NAN) German Chancellor Olaf Scholz promised on Thursday that the state would help those affected by recent flooding in the south of the country, noting that the extent of the damage was significant.

“As with previous floods, we will assess the damage together with the federal states and organise help,’’ Scholz pledged in a statement to the Bundestag, or lower house of parliament.”

The chancellor also thanked everyone who had provided assistance.

“We come together in times of need. That’s the way it should be. That’s Germany,’’ he said.

Over the past days, several locations in the southern German states of Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg have experienced the kind of rainfall that they statistically see only every 50 to 100 years.

Six people have died in the flooding so far.

Scholz acknowledged that the federal and state governments needed to be better prepared for such disasters.

He said coastal and inland flood protection would be improved.

Flood polders and retention basins must be established throughout the country, even if this is not popular, he noted.

Progress was also being made on introducing natural disaster insurance, Scholz said, noting that he planned to discuss the issue with federal states on June 20.

“House and apartment owners must be able to insure themselves against damage caused by natural disasters,’’ Scholz said.

Regular German building insurance covers storm and hail damage, but not flooding, while homeowners in flood-prone areas are often unable to obtain additional cover.

At present, the government usually steps in, costing the state millions of euros. (dpa/NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

  • Obidient Movement not domiciled in any political party -Obi

    Obi

    By Monday Ajogun

Awka, (Anambra) June 6, 2024 (NAN) Mr Peter Obi, Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, has said that the Obidient Movement is not domiciled in one political party.

Obi said this in a statement by his spokesperson, Dr Yunusa Tanko, on Thursday in Awka.

He said that membership of the movement cut across political party, tribe, religion or geopolitical region.

“I like to categorically state that the Obidient movement is not a directorate in any particular political party.

“Any individual or individuals claiming to be leaders of this non-existent directorate are simply not members of the broader Obidient Movement.

“There may be a youth mobilization directorate in political parties but the Obidient movement is far beyond a particular political party.

“The Obidient Movement is a diverse and inclusive collective that transcends traditional political, religious, and ethnic affiliations.

“It is not domiciled within any particular party or headquartered in any particular part of the country, its membership spans across Africa and the globe, comprising individuals from various backgrounds,” he said.

Obi further said that the movement was propelled by a shared vision guided by the principles of adaptive and transformative change, progress, discipline, and democratic values.

He said that loyalists of the movement were seeking to foster positive change through a commitment to integrity, honesty and accountability by rejecting deceitful behaviours.

“I want this to serve as a clarification that the Obidient Movement operates independently, and that its membership is not limited to any particular party. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

    Planting

Guyuk (Adamawa) June 6, 2024 (NAN) The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), in collaboration with Adamawa State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASA), has inaugurated a tree planting campaign in Guyuk Local Government Area of the state.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the campaign is to mark 2024 World Environmental Day with the theme “Accelerating Land Restoration, Drought Resilient and Desertification Progress”.

Mr Williams Wakili, UNICEF WASH facilitator in Adamawa, at the inauguration on Thursday, said that “the day goes beyond symbolic gesture”.

According to him, the day is focused on land restoration, desertification and drought resilience, as the nation faces degradation, desertification and drought.

“So, the day is about fostering a culture of environmental consciousness, responsibility and actions aimed at preventing damage to the environment through human activities and protecting the earth“, he said.

In his remarks, Tanko Audu, Adamawa Commissioner for Water Resources, said it was a fact that desert encroachment had eaten deep into the earth, hence, the need for afforestation.

Audu, who was represented by his Permanent Secretary, Mr Mundi Ibrahim, called on the people in the area to stop indiscriminate failing of trees, and to ensure planting of more trees to protect the environment.

Also, Mr Emmanuel Esly, Programme Manager, RUWASA, called on the people to make great impact in restoring the environment for more rainfall.

According to him, without rainfall, there will be a lot of challenges in the environment and changing times have changed the environment to something else.

“There is the need for people to do their best to restore the environment by planting more trees,” he said.

Similarly, Dishon Dan-sanda, the traditional ruler of Guyuk LGA, thanked and appreciated Adamawa government, UNICEF, and all stakeholders for the steps taken to protect the environment.

“Therefore, I will make sure to enforce these to the letter with the aim to protect our environment, and I will not tolerate indiscriminate felling of trees without planting another”, he assured. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
