    By Olajide Idowu
Osogbo, June 7, 2024 (NAN) The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Osun Command, has arrested a 40-year-old man, Jide Fadipe, for allegedly stealing roofing sheets of a government primary school in Ilesa.

Mr Michael Adaralewa, the State Commandant of NSCDC, in a statement on Friday said the suspect, a resident of Ilaje-Area, BJ4 Ilesa, was arrested for vandalizing a public primary school property.

“A member of the public from Ilesa earlier reported to the command that some unscrupulous elements had been vandalizing the school building by removing the iron sheets and other valuables in the school.

“The command subsequently mounted surveillance around the school area to apprehend the perpetrators.

“On Tuesday, the suspect was seen around 5.00a.m removing the roofing sheets of the school.

“He thereafter moved the stolen items down to his house and was apprehended while he was trying to sell the materials to metal scraps buyers in Ilesa,” Adaralewa said.

He said the offence committed by the suspect contravened Section 451 of the Criminal Code Law, Cap 34, Laws of Osun.

The commandant said that the suspect would face the full wrath of the law to serve as deterrent to others who are fond of destroying public property. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

  • Sanwo-Olu inaugurates LASUTH Paediatric Sickle Cell Centre

    Sickle Cell

    By Oluwafunke Ishola/Aderonke Ojediran

Lagos, June 7, 2024 (NAN) Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State, on Friday inaugurated a Paediatric Sickle Cell Centre at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the centre was donated to LASUTH by the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals (OSSAP-SDGs).

Sanwo-Olu said that the centre would provide a comprehensive care that includes early diagnosis, advanced treatment, and continued management to children suffering from the debilitating condition of sickle cell.

According to him, the centre will serve as a hub for research, education, foster a greater awareness and a deeper understanding of the sickle cell disease.

“This will not only transform our total healthcare landscape, but will definitely add to the number of child care facilities that already exist in our state health institutions.

“It will raise the capacity of the state’s medical services, and very importantly, contribute to improving the state’s infant and maternal mortality index,” he said.

The governor noted that the centre would provide an environment where children could receive holistic care tailored to their individual needs, from medical treatment to psychological support.

“We believe that this will ensure that every child that has an opportunity to come to this facility will come out healthier, better, and they’ll be able to fulfill their life,” he said.

Earlier, Dr Tunji Alausa, Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, restated the Federal Government’s committment to combat non-communicable diseases and improve healthcare outcomes for Nigerians.

Alausa said that sickle cell disease, alongside malaria, cancer, hypertension, diabetes, and other non-communicable diseases represent a substantial health burden for the country, worsening morbidity and mortality of citizens.

“At the federal level, we recognise the urgent need to address these challenges and are committed to building a robust infrastructure to manage and mitigate the impact in collaboration with our subnational government.

“The establishment of this state-of-the-art Sickle Cell Centre is a testament to the dedication of the SDG office to provide quality healthcare and infrastructure to our people.

“This centre is not merely a building, it is a beacon of hope for many and a cornerstone of our strategy to enhance healthcare services nationwide,” he said.

The minister stressed the importance of leveraging the resources to its fullest potential, ensuring that it delivers on its promise to improve lives.

Alausa advised subnational governments to form strategic partnerships for healthcare and human capital development, stressing that through collaboration a resilient healthcare system capable of meeting the demand of population would emerge.

He commended the Lagos State Government and OSSAP-SDGs on their partnership to provide top-tier cancer care to children and their commitment to innovative research.

Also, Dr Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals, said that the centre would enhance the quality of care to children suffering from Sickle Cell disease.

Orelope-Adefulire noted that the centre was an intervention to reduce the number of under five child mortality and strengthen the attainment of SDGs target in the country.

Contributing, Prof. Adetokunbo Fabamwo, Chief Medical Director, LASUTH, said Nigeria had one of the highest rates of sickle cell disease globally, with up to three million people living with the condition.

Fabamwo noted that the condition contributes significantly to childhood morbidity and mortality.

“It is therefore apt to have a centre like this to offer preventive and therapeutic care to child sufferers.

“The establishment of this centre takes a huge chunk of load off the usually crowded therapeutic clinics and wards,” he said. (NAN)

  • Tribunal’s N150m fine on Multichoice Nigeria sparks online reactions

    Multichoice

    By Babajide Awoyinfa

Lagos, June 7, 2024 (NAN) Some Nigerians on social media have expressed reactions following the decision of the Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal to fine Multichoice Nigeria, owners of popular Pay-TV services , DSTV and GOTV, the sum of ₦150 million.

In addition to the fine, the tribunal has ordered the company to provide a one-month free subscription to its subscribers.

Justice Thomas Okosu-led panel issued the ruling on Friday in Abuja.

Before the ruling, Multichoice Nigeria hiked the subscription rates for its DStv and GOtv packages despite the orders of the tribunal.

The Tribunal had stopped Multichoice from increasing its subscription tariffs and cost of products and services scheduled to begin on May 1.

The tribunal’s ruling has sparked debate online, monitored by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), with opinions sharply divided.

@TolaOlaosebikan, on X, formerly Twitter, wrote that the ruling should be appealed.

“Multichoice has always been on the receiving side of court rulings in Nigeria. Is it because it is a foreign firm?

“Subscribers have the right to boycott their services if they are perceived to be too expensive, and go for competitors.

“Our court rulings should not be draconian in nature but fair and just. Multichoice is a business entity for goodness’ sake.

“Who bears the operational expenses for the one month? Taxes, third-party subscriptions, rentals, salaries.”

Also, @Osi_Suave said, “I think Multichoice should exit this market because I don’t understand why a private business that doesn’t provide an essential service is constantly hounded like this.

“When they leave, maybe ‘una eye go clear’,” he said.

@NwabuwaChidume, wrote, “Multichoice and arbitrary subscription charges didn’t just start today. The corruption in the system is responsible for these extortions.

“The vulnerability of the common masses to some of these economic vampires is scary. Believe me, today’s fine won’t stop the increment.”

On the contrary, Mathew Dubem on Facebook said, “Finally, justice for the consumers! “Multichoice has been exploiting Nigerians for too long with their exorbitant subscription fees.

“This fine and the free subscription are a welcome relief, I think I will have to go get back my Gotv decoder to enjoy the one month free subscription.”

Another Facebook user, Adegoke Ademole commended the Tribunal for standing up for consumer rights.

“This ruling sets a precedent and will hopefully lead to more accountability from service providers in Nigeria.

“This is a win for all DSTV and GOTV users. It’s high time these big corporations understood that they can’t just bully their way around. Kudos to the tribunal,” he said.

Efforts by NAN to reach out to Multichoice for a comment proved abortive as the PR manager, stated that the company has yet to issue an official statement regarding the tribunal’s ruling. (NAN)

  • Lesser number of children facing severe food poverty in Nigeria – UNICEF

Children facing severe food poverty in Nigeria declines- UNICEF

    Food poverty

    By Folasade Akpan

Abuja, June 7, 2024 (NAN) The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), says Nigeria has demonstrated a steady decline in the proportion of children facing severe food poverty from 45 per cent in 2012 to 32 per cent in 2022.

The fund said this in a statement it issued on Friday in Abuja, adding that it is contained in the “Child Food Poverty: Nutrition Deprivation in Early Childhood report” published on Friday.

The report also said that about 11 million children or one in every three children under five years of age, in Nigeria are presently experiencing severe child food poverty.

It said that the situation could make the children up to 50 per cent more likely to experience wasting, a life-threatening form of malnutrition.

“For the first time, the “Child Food Poverty: Nutrition Deprivation in Early Childhood” report analyses the impacts and causes of dietary deprivation among the world’s youngest and most vulnerable, that is children under five years of age, in nearly 100 countries, and across income groups.

“Globally, 181 million children under the age of five who consume, at most, two of eight defined food groups are considered in severe child food poverty and unable to sustain optimal growth and development in early childhood and beyond.

“Nigeria ranks among the 20 countries that account for almost two-thirds (65 per cent) of the 181 million children living in severe child food poverty.”

The report also said that globally, four out of five children experiencing child food poverty are fed only breastmilk/milk and/or a starchy staple, such as rice, maize, or wheat.

Also, that less than 10 per cent of these children are fed fruits and vegetables, and even fewer, less than five per cent, are fed nutrient-dense foods such as eggs, fish, poultry, or meat.

The report, however, warns that while countries are still recovering from the socio-economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, the effects of growing inequities, conflicts, and the climate crisis have pushed food prices and the cost of living to record high levels.

“A recently published report by the government and partners titled Cadre Harmonisé estimates that nearly 32 million people across 26 states of Nigeria are food insecure during this year’s lean season between June and August.

“Globally and in Nigeria, several factors are fueling the child food poverty crisis, including food systems that fail to provide children with nutritious and safe and accessible options.

“Others are families’ inability to afford nutritious foods, and parents’ inability to adopt and sustain positive child feeding practices.”

It added that cheap, nutrient-poor and unhealthy ultra-processed foods and sugar-sweetened beverages are aggressively marketed to parents and families and are the new normal for feeding children.

“These unhealthy foods and beverages are consumed by an alarming proportion of young children experiencing food poverty, displacing more nutritious and healthier foods from their daily diets.

“The report shows that in Nigeria, the number of children facing serious hunger is much higher in the poorest families (44 per cent) compared to the richest families (17 per cent).

“However, much more needs to be done to ensure that every child has access to and consumes a diverse diet”, the statement said.

To end child food poverty, UNICEF called on governments, development and humanitarian organisations, donors, civil society and the food and beverage industry, to urgently transform food systems.

It added that nutritious, diverse and healthy foods were the most accessible, affordable and desirable option for caregivers to feed young children.

“Leverage health systems to deliver essential nutrition services to prevent and treat malnutrition in early childhood, including support for community health and nutrition workers to counsel parents and families on child feeding and care practices.

“Activate social protection systems to address income poverty through social transfers (cash, food and vouchers), in ways that are responsive to the food and nutrition needs of vulnerable children and their families.” (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

  • FCCPC sensitises Kogi students on consumer rights, responsibilities

FCCPC Team in a group photograph with students of Baptist Group of Schools, after the sensitisation program on Friday in Lokoja

    Sensitisation

    By Stephen Adeleye

Lokoja, June 7, 2024 (NAN) The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) on Friday in Lokoja, sensitised secondary schools students in Kogi on their rights and responsibilities as consumers.

Mr Ibrahim Bello, Assistant Chief Consumer and Business Education Officer, FCCPC, while addressing students at Baptist Group of Schools, said the sensitisation was to educate consumers on their rights and responsibilities.

Bello said the commission embarked on the exercise to ensure that consumers were adequately informed in order to get value for their money on purchased goods and services.

According to him, consumers have responsibilities to speak out, think independently, complain, share experience, and be alert to the quality and safety of products and services before purchase.

He added that consumers have rights to information, product labelling, trade descriptions, price disclosure of products, sales record, select suppliers, fair dealings, return goods, as well examine goods.

“Others are rights to safe, good quality products, cancel advance bookings or order, implied warranty of quality, and right disclosure of used or reconditioned goods, and so on.

“One of the functions of FCCPC is to educate consumers, and we are doing this sensitisation simultaneously across the six States of the North Central geo-political zone ,” Bello said.

Bello said said that FCCPC would collaborate with schools to establish clubs in schools – Fan Club in Primary schools, and Young Consumer Club in secondary schools to sustain the sensitisation programme.

He added: “the FCCPC mandate is to protect and promote the interest of consumers by providing them with a wider variety of quality products at competitive prices.

“We are also ensuring the adoption of measures to guarantee that goods and services are safe for intended or normally safe for use”.

He advised consumers to always seek  knowledge of what they are buying so as to have value for their money, noting that there are many fake and substandard products in the market.

Bello urged consumers to always report issues of purchased fake or substandard products to the commission through their diverse complaints platforms.

“We are calling on consumers to report any sale of fake and substandard products to FCCPC through our portal, social media handles, including our telephone hotline and offices,” Bello said.

In their separate remarks, the Principals of Baptist Group of Schools, Mrs Victoria Olaleye, and that of Kellen International School Lokoja, Mr Joseph Okpanachi, commended FCCPC for the gesture towards their schools.

“We appreciate the gesture because we have manufacturers, producers, as well as consumers among our students.

“So, when all parties know their rights and responsibilities, they would be able to enlighten others. This will help to form a sane generation that will compete fairly,” Okpanachi said.

“We are very lucky to have FCCPC in our school to sensitise our students to make us aware of our rights and responsibilities as consumers.

“We will immediately inaugurate the Young Consumer club in our school,” Olaleye said.

One of the students, Maria Umoru, appreciated the commission for the sensitisation programme, which she said was an eye-opener to the students.

“We have also been advised to always check the expiry date on any product, and never patronise roadsides sellers,” she said.

Schools visited included Baptist Group of Schools, KELIEN International, Sunnah Academy, Christ Field, Julitola International, and Irawo secondary school, all in Lokoja.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

  • Russia global trade partner in spite sanctions, says Putin

    Trade

St. Petersburg, June 7, 2024 (dpa/NAN) President Vladimir Putin says Russia remains a key partner in world trade even under increasing Western sanctions.

The country is developing its logistics and the geography of its international cooperation in spite of all the obstacles and what he called “illegitimate sanctions” imposed by the West.

Putin said this on Friday at the 27th St Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF).

He said that the country is among the leading economic nations ahead of Germany, while referring to data that takes purchasing power into account.

The West has imposed unprecedented sanctions on Russia as punishment for Putin’s war against Ukraine, which has been going on for more than two years.

According to Putin, around three quarters of foreign trade is now conducted with countries that are friendly to Russia.

He added that since the west imposed trade bans in many areas, Russia has orientated itself economically towards China in particular, but also towards India, Africa and Latin America.

In a speech to hundreds of guests, Putin called for the expansion of cooperation in technology transfer and announced interesting growth prospects for investors from abroad.

The Russian president also said that the development of a payment system independent of the United States would continue. (dpa/NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
