The NCDC said on Saturday via its official website that the country registered 10 cases of Lassa fever cases across four states in one week, spanning 20 to 26 May.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that Lassa Fever is an acute viral hemorrhagic (excessive bleeding) illness.

It is transmitted to humans through contact with food or household items contaminated by infected rodents or contaminated persons.

Its symptoms include fever, headache, sore throat, general body weakness, cough, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, muscle pains, chest pain.

In severe cases, it manifests in unexplainable bleeding from ears, eyes, nose, mouth, and other body openings.

The Centre said the number of confirmed Lassa Fever cases rose from four in week 20 to ten in the current reporting week 21.

It said that in addition to the rise in confirmed cases, there was an increase in the number of suspected cases compared to the same period in 2023.

Cumulatively, it said that the country has recorded 897 confirmed cases and 162 deaths in 2024 with a case fatality rate (CFR) of 18.1 per cent, which is higher than the CFR for the same period in 2023 (17.1 per cent).

According to it, 28 states have confirmed, at least, one case across 125 local government areas (LGA) in 2024.

It noted that 65 per cent of the confirmed cases were recorded from four states: Ondo, Bauchi, Edo and Plateau, while 35 per cent were reported from 25 states.

Of the 65 per cent, it said that Ondo State accounted for 25 per cent, Edo, 22 per cent, and Bauchi, 18 per cent.

The NCDC said that people between the ages of 31 and 40 were predominantly affected by the disease, stressing that no health worker was infected in the reporting week.

It said that the surge highlighted the growing concern and the need for heightened surveillance and preventive measures across the country.

The public health agency urged the public to adhere to recommended safety protocols and to report any symptoms to local health authorities promptly.

The NCDC said it was also intensifying its efforts to trace contacts and implement control measures to curb the spread of the disease.

The agency said it would continue to monitor the situation closely and was working with state health authorities to ensure a coordinated response.

“The National Lassa Fever Multi-partner, Multi-sectoral Technical Working Group (TWG) continues coordinating the response at all levels,” it said. (NAN) www.nannews.ng

  • Crashes: Training traffic officers will improve road safety performance – Consultant

    Training

    By Uchenna Eletuo

Lagos, June 7, 2024 (NAN) Dr Segun Musa, Chairman and Chief Consultant, Global Transport Policy (GTP), says  it is important to train traffic officers as it  impacts positively on their service delivery and reduces road incidents that most times claim lives.

Musa, a former Lagos State Gubernatorial Candidate, spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on the forthcoming GTP training of  traffic officers of the Lagos State Police Command.

According to him, the session is essential to infuse global best practices in the officers, as  human induced mishaps and the dearth of trainings contribute to life threatening risks on the roads.

He described transportation as an essential aid to trade and commerce, saying the training was GTP’s corporate social responsibility intervention to better the society.

According to him, the session for the Divisional Traffic Officers (DTOs) of the Command will equip officers with Emotional Intelligence (EI) capabilities as they constantly relate with the public.

The training, planned for June 21, at the Bon Hotel, Ikeja GRA, has the theme: “Improving Traffic Policing: Leveraging Emotional Intelligence Skills”.

Musa said: “The innovative brand management kit to foster global multimodal systems, structures, strategies and policies through strategic collaborations and consultancy services will advance participants civil culture in service delivery.

“It will specifically focus on crucial issues such as developing self-awareness and self-regulation to manage stress and emotions effectively, enhancing empathy and social skills for better communication and conflict resolution,” he said.

Musa identified Emotional intelligence as a crucial skill set in law enforcement, particularly in high-stress environments such as traffic management.

“Analysts say officers with high EI are better equipped to handle challenging situations, communicate effectively with the public, and make sound decisions under pressure”.

According to him, investing in the EI of police officers is a proactive step toward creating a safer and harmonious traffic environment in Lagos.

“Applying EI techniques in real life traffic scenarios helps to de-escalate conflicts and promote cooperation,”

NAN reports that the GTP team, led by its chairman, had earlier paid a courtesy visit to the Lagos State Police Commissioner, Mr Adegoke  Fayoade, to seal the training arrangement.

According to the chief consultant, the police boss commended GTP’s move to partner the force to improve service to the public. (NAN)

  • ECA, partners hold training on electricity market design

    Electricity

    By Lucy Ogalue

Abuja, June 8, 2024 (NAN) The Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), RES4Africa Foundation and Gestore dei Servizi Energetici (GSE) have concluded a High-Level Policy and Regulatory Training on Electricity Market Design.

The ECA, in a statement released on its website, said the training was a significant step towards advancing Africa’s electricity reform agenda and increasing private sector participation in clean energy infrastructure.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the initiative is titled “Advancing Africa’s Electricity Reform Agenda: Towards Increased Private Sector Participation in Clean Energy Infrastructure.’’

The project builds on a successful regulatory work conducted by ECA and RES4Africa since 2019 and has assessed the electricity policy and regulatory frameworks in 16 African countries in four years.

It provides evidence-based recommendations to enhance regulatory openness, attractiveness, and readiness for private sector investments.

The statement quoted Robert Lisinge, Acting Director of Technology, Innovation, Connectivity, and Infrastructure at the ECA as reiterating the importance of de-risking investments.

According to Lisinge, de-risking investment, especially in an environment where the continent attracts a fraction of global energy investments, calls for a serious look at the policy and regulatory system.”

He said that addressing pressing regulatory constraints and, in some cases, regulatory absence, provided clarity to investors.

“ECA’s energy regulation and investment programme aims to bridge this barrier by supporting member states in their efforts to advance regulation and de-risk their markets,” he said.

Similarly, Yohannes Hailu, ,ECA’s Energy Policy Expert said, enabling greater private sector investment and participation in Africa’s electricity markets through policy and regulatory enhancements was crucial for sustainable financing.

Hailu said Kenya’s effort to address bulk electricity supply and open access regulation ensured a broader openness of the electricity market to private investment.

According to him, it also serves as a regulatory best practice to inspire similar initiatives across the continent.

“At the heart of this training is the broader initiative to provide technical support to Kenya in adopting and implementing Bulk Power and Open Access Regulation.

“This regulation has profound implications for opening Kenya’s electricity market to further private investment.

“Kenya’s advancing regulatory framework and emerging public-private partnership models in transmission investment positions it among the front-runners in Africa’s energy sector reform,’’ he said.

Meanwhile, Roberto Vigotti, Secretary-General at RES4Africa Foundation, said RES4Africa believed that the future of Africa’s energy lied in the hands of a well-informed and empowered community of policymakers, regulators, and industry leaders.

Vigotti said the training represented a pivotal step towards creating an enabling environment for private sector investments in the clean energy sector.

According to him, the collaboration with ECA, GSE and other partners will drive the energy transition across the continent, ensuring sustainable, reliable, and affordable electricity for all.

Also, Alberto Biancardi, Director of Studies, Monitoring, and International Relations at GSE, said, GSE was pleased to work together with RES4Africa and ECA in furthering the energy transition.

“We are eager to continue supporting the creation of opportunities for building capacities to design the most effective ways of tackling persistent challenges and taking advantage of the wealth of opportunities on the continent.

“ECA maintains ongoing collaboration with member states in advancing regulation and market de-risking measures.

“This collaboration involves developing and implementing supportive regulatory instruments, capacity-building initiatives, and technical assistance to address the investment gap in the sector,’’ he said.

NAN reports that the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and the Enel Foundation collaborated and supported the organisations to ensure success of the training.

The AFRY Management Consulting and Grupo Mercados Energéticos Consultores (GME) are also valued partners in delivering quality knowledge and skills sharing with participating experts.(NAN)

  • Group tasks APC on better reward system for party loyalists

    Reward

    By Emmanuel Oloniruha

Abuja, June 8, 2024(NAN) Renewed Hope Unity Movement, a support group of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has advised the party to establish a better reward system for its loyalists.

The Initiator and Co-Convener of the group, Iretidola Ojekhoa, gave the advice at an award night organised by the group on Friday in Abuja.

Ojekhoa said that 2014 marked the beginning of a political revolution and a watershed in party politics in Nigeria–when APC, a newly formed party, defeated the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which thought it would rule for at least 60 years.

She, however, said that most of those who worked for the party had yet to be rewarded; even when there were very experienced and professional patriots among them.

“The nation, of course, needs people who not only want to be appointed but who are passionate about the APC government succeeding against all odds, considering the many ulcers plaguing the nation.

“The last ten years have proven one thing–the APC seems not interested in molding and maintaining an organic membership.

“In fact, it has spawned a mercenary mentality among members as the party has been abysmal in recognising and rewarding loyalty.

“The APC of today is so unconcerned or unaware about the neglect of its core supporters; that commitment ebbs so fast among members; even the worst of the PDP days, recognised its loyal members.’’

Ojekhoa said unfortunately many who worked and still working daily were never recognised but watch others who they fought against at one point or another over party matter took up prominent places.

“We see that their resilience is being tested and hope deferred has begun to make the heart weary; and so, we are standing in the gap and doing a little of what the party should have long done as a start in the journey of desired unity of purpose.

“As stated above, we have never promoted the idea of exclusivity in governance.’’

Ojekhoa said that the event was to celebrate 10 years of loyalty of certain groups and individuals in APC who had never been celebrated, recognised or honoured, yet remained unwavering.

She said that some of those to be honoured were foot soldiers who canvassed the nooks and crannies of the nation 10 years ago, dispensing hope and mobilising support for the APC.

“We are here to celebrate those who have labored for the party for these 10 years but never got a pat on the back.

“It is also to remind those who have conveniently forgotten their labour of love that our loyal members are still around though neglected,” she said.

Ojekhoa said that though every members of the party who worked for it victory could not be appointed but they deserved to be recognised and celebrated.

Mr Ateli Emmanuel, the President, Amalgamated Nigerians, and a Chieftain of the party in FCT, commended the group for recognising him as one of those that deserved the award.

Emmanuel, who expressed confidence in the President Bola Tinubu-led administration, advised him to engage more youth and technocrats in his government.

Another awardee, Mr Aja Aja, a lawyer, said it was unfortunate that the party had failed to recognise loyal members, adding that the award ceremony would serve as succour to many.

Aja expressed the willingness of some of the committed party members to partner with government to move the country forward and achieve the Renew Hope Agenda of the present administration.

On one year of the present government in office, Aja urged Tinubu to prioritise people’s welfare and implement his core policies that would make people to begin to see evidence of good governance going forward.

He also advised government to harness all the potential at its disposal and look beyond what he currently has.

“There are so many talents in Nigeria, both political talents and professional talents; get them on board and see that the Renewed Hope agenda is not an aborted dream,” he said.

Dr Adewale Adeogun, Founder/National Coordinator, Asiwaju Progressive Forum, advised Tinubu’s supporters not to lose hope but continue to support him and his administration to succeed.

“Yes, there are people who feel they should be appointed but we should be more concerned about how this country is governed,” Adeogun advised.

Other recipients of the group award in recognition of a decade of service to APC and Nigeria included Taminu Kabir, Edo Bartholomeus, Obi Kenneth, Hussain Badaki and Hawal Kabir.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
