Investigate mass sack of CBN workers, group urges NASS

    Sack

    By Polycarp Auta

Jos, June 9, 2024 (NAN) The Conference of Autochthonous Ethnic Communities Development Association (CONECDA), has urged the National Assembly to investigate the recent mass sack of some workers of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

Mr. Paul Dekete, the North Central Coordinator of CONECDA Youth Wing, made the request in a statement on Sunday in Jos.

Dekete, who faulted the manner in which the affected workers; largely directors, deputy and assistant directors, were dismissed, said that the process violated the bank’s established procedure.

The coordinator also maintained that the move would grossly affect the operations of critical departments within the apex bank, adding that 16 departments were affected by the action.

Dekete decried that the affected personnel were those with avalanche of experience and expertise in their various fields, needed to move the apex financial institution forward.

”This is why we are calling on the National Assembly to investigate the CBN to understand the rationale behind the mass sack of its staff and the criteria used.

”The National Assembly should ensure that CBN follows established procedures for staff reduction as laid out in its HR (Human Resource) manual and best practices worldwide.

”That the insensitive termination letters should be withdrawn and replaced with more appropriate documentation that reflects the employees’ work records.

”The National Assembly should ensure all the decisions are reviewed to ensure compliance with CBN HR policy and public service rules,” he said.

Dekete also appealed to the lawmakers to ensure that employees, who were dismissed without proper justification, were reinstated.

He said that the dismissed staff deserved fair compensation to mitigate the economic hardship caused by the management’s decision. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

    By Oladele Eniola

Lagos, June 9, 2024 (NAN) Spanish professional football club, Real Madrid, kicked off the weekly news trends as they won their 15th Champions League title with a 2-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund on Saturday, June 1.

Madrid had won six titles in the past 11 years while Dortmund were looking for their second championship in the club history.
The much-anticipated match was played at the Wembley Stadium.
Dortmund outclassed Madrid in the first half as they created multiple scoring chances but didn’t take them as the game went into halftime  in a scoreless draw.
Madrid began to assert control into the second half as Dani Carvajal finally broke through with a header off a corner kick from Toni Kross who was playing his last game for Madrid.
Shortly after, Vinicius took a pass from Jude Bellingham and sent in for a 2-0 lead as Toni Kross retired a Real Madrid Legend as he closed with season with a Champions League and La Liga Trophy.

On Sunday, June 2, American professional boxer, Deontay Wilder, was handed another loss by Zhilei Zhang in a fifth round knockout at Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The battle of the power puncher did not favour Wilder from the outset as both fighters strayed the bout tentatively but Zhang’s offence was more effective in the early going.
Wilder was unwilling to let his hands go in the fight and Zhang took advantage of it as he dominated the first four rounds.
In the fifth round, Zhang landed a glancing right hand and finished it off with a crushing fight that sent the defenceless Wilder tumbling to the canvas thereby handing him his fourth defeat in five matches.
Many have predicted that the latest defeat has ended Wilder’s career with the latter admitting before the match that he may retire if he lost.
The day also witnessed Islam Makhachev successfully defended his lightweight title at UFO 302, as he defeated veteran Dustin Poitier with a fifth round submission.
In the fifth round of the fight, the Russian was spoting a substantial forehead cut as a result of repeated takedown by Poirer in the third and fourth round.
Makhachev completely turned the tables on Poirer by winning, by submission of the final round and had prevailed in 14 straight UFC fights, a steak that started with a victory over Chris Wade on Sept. 17, 2016.
On Monday, millions of Nigerians were without electricity after the national grid was shut down as part of a general strike by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) over the hike of electricity tariff and lack of consensus on a new minimum wage.
The strike also hounded activities in critical sectors of the economy as schools, businesses , hospitals and airports were shut as long queues returned to fuel stations.
On Tuesday, the NLC and TUC suspended their industrial action for five days after a meeting between the labour leaders and the Federal Government.
Labour noted that the suspension of the strike was taken to give the government time to deliberate on the unresolved issues at hand.
On the same day, actress Toyin Abraham said she had decided to keep her political affiliations private in the future, adding that she had learnt her lesson following a social media exchange that occurred on X , formerly Twitter.

The exchange began when an X user identified as Otunba (@ManLikeIcey), wrote, “Maybe one day Toyin Abraham will divulge the plans Bola Tinubu shared with her to the public. I strongly believe we deserve to hear. Thank u @toyin_abraham1.”

In response, Abraham said  that she had been assured of “good governance and happiness for everyone by Tinubu’s camp”.

”You asked me in a polite way, so, I will definitely answer you, of course, I was told and promised good governance and happiness for everyone and which I believe,” she stated.

She expressed reluctance in bearing  the brunt of public scrutiny should the promises fail to materialise.

“If things didn’t go well why do I have to be the one to suffer for it because I remember I voted (ex-president) Jonathan and I was bullied but I didn’t put blame on anyone after everyone chose (ex-president) Buhari. So, please why would they be cursing and trolling me every time.”

The X user asked further,  “Thank you for your prompt response. Do you believe he has failed at the moment in governance or not?”

Abraham replied, “I have faced my life and career because I am not a politician and I’m not in government, I have learnt my lesson never ever to be open with my choice again.”
On Wednesday, Kayode Egbetokun, Inspector-General of Police, appointed Yetunde Longe as the Secretary of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).
With this appointment, Longe became the first female secretary of the force.

The big names to miss out are  Harry Maguire, who was removed due to injury while Jack Grealish did not make the squad due to lack of playing time at club level.
Others who did not make the list are : James Maddison, Curtis Jones, Jaread Branthwaite, Jarell Quansah and James Trafford.
Surprisingly, Manchester United left back, Luke Shaw, who has been largely unavailable for his club in the just-concluded campaign, made the final equal while youngsters, Kobbie Maino and Adam Wharton were also included.
Still in the world of sports, the Super Eagles played out a 1-1 draw with the Bafana Bafana of South Africa at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on Friday.
The result was Nigeria’s third consecutive draw in the Group C World Cup qualifiers and leaves  Nigeria in fifth with three points in the log table.
The Super Eagles were behind when Themba Zwame struck in the 28th minute as Hugo Broos’ team were disciplined at the back to prevent the eagles from scoring.
Early in the second half, Dele Basiru equalised but the scores remained that way till full time as Nigeria remained fifth on the table with South Africa in fourth.
Also, it was a night of glitz and glamour as Nigerian singer and rapper, Oladapo Oyebanji, popularly known as D’banj celebrated his 20 years of musical excellence in a sophisticated ceremony.

  • Why I moved for creation of additional state constituencies – lawmaker

Why I moved for creation of additional state constituencies – lawmaker

    Constituencies

    By Peter Amine

Jos, June 9, 2024 (NAN) Mr Nanbol Daniel (LP-Langtang North Central), Member, Plateau State House of Assembly, has explained why he moved the motion for creation of additional state constituencies in the assembly.

Daniel told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Jos, that the people of the state would have better representation if more constituencies were created out of the current 24.

The lawmaker said that the creation would further help in meeting the current legislative demands of Plateau.

He said the constituencies should be reviewed from 24 to 40 members, to reflect equity in the number of federal constituencies in Plateau.

Daniel stated that since the inception of the current democratic dispensation in 1999, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), had not reviewed the number of constituencies in the state.

According to him, it is a constitutional duty of INEC to do a periodic review of constituencies, noting that Plateau has been long overdue in view of its growing population.

The lawmaker stated that Section 91 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) provided that a State House of Assembly shall consist of three or four times the number of seats that it has in the House of Representatives.

“It is provided that a House of Assembly of a state shall consist of not less than 24 and not more than 40 members.

“Section 112 of the Nigerian Constitution also provides that the INEC shall divide every state of the federation into such number of state constituencies as is equal to three or four times the number of federal constituencies within that state.

“More so, Section 114 provides that INEC shall review the division of every state into constituencies at intervals of not less than ten years.

“And may alter such constituencies in accordance with the provisions of Section 114 to such extent as it may consider desirable in the light of the review,” he explained.

Daniel therefore, urged the state’s lawmakers, National Assembly members, and Plateau Government, to start and sustain the processes for the upward review and creation of additional state constituencies. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

He appealed to President Bola Tinubu to mandate the Ministry of Education to put modalities in place and to work with state governments to ensure speedy implementation of the policy.

According to him, this will go a long way to resuscitate learning and communication in local languages and prevent indigenous language from going into extinction.

Awhensebe also called on the Federal Government to prioritise reviving the Sapele, Warri and Koko ports in Delta.

He said reviving the ports would help to decongest the gridlock at the Apapa Port in Lagos State while boosting the economy of not just Delta, but the Niger Delta region and the nation at large.

He commended government’s ongoing efforts at rehabilitating portions of the Abuja-Lokoja-Auchi-Benin-Warri federal highways which had been in deplorable condition for many years.

The branch president appealed to the Minister of Works, Mr Dave Umahi to ensure speedy execution of the contracts for the federal highways for the comfort of citizens plying the roads.

Awhensebe, equally tasked the Federal Ministry of Transportation to commerce work on the Itakpe-Abuja rail line which he said had the potential to boost socio-economic activities along the corridors of the Abuja-Itakpe-Warri area.

He further appealed to government at all levels to provide the enabling environment for citizens to thrive in their endeavours through the provision of basic amenities and infrastructures.

The Union’s Secretary Mr Mitaire Ikpen, while speaking with newsmen on the sideline of the event, said its essence was to showcase the rich cultural heritage of Okpe kingdom in Delta.

Ikpen said the celebration was also to foster unity and patriotism among the people while preserving the rich cultural heritage of the kingdom.

“As we celebrate our day and culture, it fosters among us a sense of belonging, unity and commitment to patriotic ideals,” he said.

Also, Chief Bright Igbako, the pioneer Secretary of National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) said members of Okpe kingdom were historically children of same father.

He said the 94th anniversary was an opportunity for the Okpe people to celebrate themselves and to throw more light on their activities and culture.

“Every opportunity we have to emphasise our identity, we seize it to let the world know we are playing our part in the affairs of Delta and Nigeria,” Igbako stressed. (NAN).

CBN probe: Tinubu, Cardoso’s anti-corruption drive yielding results — Analyst

    Probe

    By Sumaila Ogbaje

Abuja, June 9, 2024 (NAN) A Lagos-based public affairs analyst, Gbenga Ibrahim, has commended President Bola Tinubu and the Governor, Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Yemi Cardoso, for driving change through ongoing anti-corruption campaign in CBN.

Ibrahim, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Abuja, that Tinubu had announced significant progress in the investigation into the CBN.

He said the probe, led by special investigator Jim Obazee, had uncovered a staggering amount of stolen funds, unauthorised bank accounts, and fraudulent transactions totaling billions of naira.

According to him, sources have revealed that the investigation implicated former CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, who is currently facing charges in courts.

“Emefiele is accused of financial misconduct and abusing his position for personal gain.

“The probe has revealed a complex web of corruption involving top officials at the CBN and other related entities.

“Investigators have discovered numerous unauthorised bank accounts, both within and outside the country, containing billions of naira in stolen funds,” he said.

Ibrahim said the investigation also uncovered evidence of fraudulent transactions, including a controversial Naira redesign project that allegedly stifled productivity and led to chaos in October 2022.

The project, according to him, is a conspiracy against the Nigerian people and political class by the then-CBN Governor and one of the erstwhile CBN Deputy Governors.

He attributed the successes of the investigation to the ability of Cardoso led leadership to identify capable hands like Bala Bello, an experienced and competent professional.

“Though I have never met the Governor or his deputies, inside sources confirmed that Bello is a very Deligent , meticulous and analytical person.

“A staff has described him as workaholic and straight forward, most times the first to come to the office and last to leave is part of the CBN management team led by Yemi Cardoso.

“He rose through the ranks to become Deputy Governor, Corporate Services, a position requiring rigorous security checks and scrutiny.

“It is unfair to blame him for implementing recommendations from the special investigation counsel appointed by the president,” he added.

Ibrahim said the successes at the CBN was a result of teamwork, compliance with APEX bank’s policy, and a capable team following the CBN hierarchy.

According to him, has commendably taken decisive action to combat corruption in the CBN, appointing a special investigator to probe the bank and related entities.

He lauded the administration’s commitment to transparency and accountability, adding that it is a significant step forward in the fight against corruption.

According to him, the President’s efforts have sent a strong message that corruption will no longer be tolerated in Nigeria’s financial sector.

“As the investigation continues, Nigerians are optimistic that President Tinubu’s anti-corruption drive will yield even more significant results, restoring public trust and integrity to the CBN and related entities,” he said. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

  • Power: Expert wants FG to address multiple taxation

    Taxation

    By Constance Athekame

Abuja, June 9, 2024 (NAN) An expert in the power sector, Mr Kunle Olubiyo has appealed to the Federal Government to  address multiple taxation in the sector.

Olubiyo, who is also the President, Nigeria Consumer Protection Network (NCPN),  said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Sunday.

According to him, government need to reduce the multiple bullet being fired at the end users as taxes.

“All taxes that manufacturers are made to pay are being transferred to the end users.

“Businesses that have multiplier effect on job creation and production in the sector should be looked into.

“Taxes are making it difficult for us to breathe, so this is the area we want government to look at, particularly the manufacturing sector.

“When the physical and non-physical incentive is granted to the manufacturing sector, it translates into multiplier effect and productive activities,” he said.

Olubiyo said the issue of multiple taxation if not properly addressed would lead to the country losing the required competition, especially in the power sector.

According to him, most of the businesses that are supposed to be in Nigeria will be diverted to other West African countries.

Also speaking on the poor state of electricity, Olubiyo said government should henceforth ensure that Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCOS) should not be placed in the hands of individuals’ control.

“Most DisCos belong to two or three people, they should be properly restructured and listed on the stock exchange for public equity.”

He said by so doing, the issue of good governance, discipline and corruption would be checked. (NAN) (www nannews.ng)

  • Nutritionists harp on benefits of palm oil consumption

Nutritionists harp on benefits of palm oil consumption

    Palm

    By Adenike Ayodele

Lagos, June 9, 2024 (NAN) Some nutritionists and lifestyle experts have urged Nigerians to use palm oil, instead of other vegetable oils, due to its nutritional value.

Mrs Olufunmilola Adewumi, Chief Nutritionist and  Head of Department, Shomolu General Hospital, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

According to her, components of palm oil are linoleic acid (Omega 6), carotenoids (anti-oxidants), phytosterols, vitamin K,  lauric acid and capric acid, medium chain triglycerides (anti-microbial and anti-fungal agent).

Adewumi, also a registered dietitian, noted that  though  vegetable oil commonly known  as “ororo” and palm oil  known  as “epo” in yoruba dialect belonged to the class of vegetable oils, they were of different categories,  classifications and benefits.

She stated that vegetable oils, also known as plant oils, were derived from oil seeds, grown mainly for their oil e.g. canola corn, cottonseed, olive, palm kernel oil, coconut, peanut, sunflower and soyabean.

She further said that palm oil had higher percentage of saturated fats of about 51 per cent, mono-saturated fats of 39 per cent, and poly-unsaturated fats of 10 per cent.

Speaking further, she added that vegetable oil had 15 per cent of unsaturated fats, 50 per cent of mono-saturated fats and 35 per cent of poly-unsaturated fats.

The dietitian then noted that palm oil had lots of health benefits over vegetable oil.

According to her, palm oil enhances the absorption of essential vitamin A, adding that its specific type of saturated fats (palmitic acid) is not associated with raising Low Density Lipoproteins (LDL) cholesterols.

“Due to its rich source of vitamin E, lycopene, beta-carotene, palm oil serves as antioxidants that reduce oxidative stress, prevents cancer, safeguards the brain tissues and reduces age-related muscular  degeneration.

“It also contains vitamin K, which is crucial for blood clotting and bone health and when ingested moderately daily, it provides cardio-protective, anti-diabetic, anti-inflammatory and anti-thrombotic effects.

“When palm oil is used tropically, it restores hydration to dry skin,  soothes headaches, reliefs pain associated with rheumatism and aids healing of wounds and skin infections.

“It eliminates dandruff,  thereby supporting hair growth, has anti-caking property that prevents lumps from forming in powdered products and it soothes bruises and sunburns,” she said.

Adewumi, however, said regardless of the oil one chooses to use, it was important to be mindful of the amount of oil usage in cooking for a healthy lifestyle.

“While oil is an essential ingredient that adds flavour and texture to our dishes, excessive consumption can lead to numerous health issues such as weight gain, heart disease and high cholesterol levels.

“By using little oil in our cooking, we can reduce our overall calorie intake, maintain a healthy weight and lifestyle,” the nutritionist said.

In her contribution, another  Lagos-based registered dietician and nutritionist, Ms Adaeze Oparaku, said the usage of palm oil on all dishes was healthy, if it was not bleached.

Oparaku added that  palm oil had the highest source of Vitamin A in the form of beta carotene, compared with other foods.

“As a matter of diversity,  one can incorporate both palm oil and vegetable oil,  but remember moderation is key.

“There are vitamin A fortified vegetable oils one can use, but one should take note that the vegetable oils with higher levels of Poly-unsaturated fats, monounsaturated fats and low levels of saturated fats are healthier,” she said.

Also speaking, a CyberRisk Management Specialist in Dallas, U.S., Ms Momo Akwara, said palm oil should be the preferred oil for consumption in Nigeria, because vegetable oils were toxic when heated.

Akwara, who is also a Nutrition Adviser, said that usually Nigerians cooked for a long time and as a result, “the process of making vegetable oils become very toxic”.

She added that extraction of oils from the seeds for instance was time consuming and as a result, they became toxic when exposed to heat.

She said the total inclusion of palm oil into daily diets prevented some major diseases.

According to her, the preferred cooking oils are the likes of organic natural butter, coconut oil and palm oil.

“These oils have a higher smoked point and that is why I constantly educate Nigerians because,  we tend to cook for much longer and palm oil is  natural oil for us, if you get the original one that has not been mixed.

“Palm oil is much healthier,  but if you take the same palm oil and bleach because you want to make ofada sauce, you are also killing the oil nutrients.

“I, for example, do not consume ofada sauce anymore,  because it is not healthy and research has found out that these so called vegetable oils are toxic when exposed to heat and are not fit for human consumption,” she stated.

The specialist, while agitating for the removal of vegetable oil from Nigerian kitchens, however, encouraged those who could not do without vegetable oil,  to extract oil from some fatty meats.

“The fats from our meat should be able to give us enough oil that we need, and the way we cook should also change,  because we must not re-use the same oil.

“We must educate the public that vegetable oils are dangerous to the point of being carcinogenic.

“I have been educating people on the dangers of consuming vegetable oils for 10 years and I can tell you for a fact that vegetable oils  are one of the leading causes of inflammation and it is one of the root causes of diseases,” she said.

Akwara urged Nigerians to do everything within their powers to prevent diseases and embrace healthy feeding. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
