  • NAF airstrikes destroy illegal oil refining sites in Imo

NAF airstrikes destroy illegal oil refining sites in Imo

    Airstrikes

    By Sumaila Ogbaje

Abuja, June 9, 2024 (NAN) The Nigerian Air Force (NAF), has said that the Air Component of Operation Delta Safe successfully destroyed two Illegal Refining Sites (IRS) situated along the banks of Imo River.

NAF’s Director, Public Relations and Information, Edward Gabkwet, in a statement on Sunday in Abuja, said the operation was carried out on Saturday.

Gabkwet said the strike was conducted barely hours after the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, had discussions with Gov. Alex Otti of Abia on plans to set up a NAF Base in the state.

He said the illegal sites were located near Obiaku and in close proximity to the Imo-Abia-Rivers borders.

According to him, the sites consist of two tanks and a reservoir in one location and three tanks and two reservoirs in another location along the Imo Riverbank.

“Observing that these sites were active, authorisation was sought and received for air strikes on the targets.

“Subsequently, air strikes by the Air Component of Operation Delta Safe were conducted, which destroyed the 2 sites as well as the surface tanks and reservoirs.

“Building on these successes, air operations under Operation Delta Safe, will be intensified, especially within the areas of interest, as part of efforts to curtail the activities of criminal elements.

“The successes recorded in destroying these IRS bring to fore the necessity of a NAF Base in Abia, which Gov. Otti and Air Marshal Abubakar both agreed was long overdue,” he said.

Gabkwet said that NAF’s continued efforts in all ongoing operations underscored its commitment to maintaining aerial dominance over the Nigerian skies, while collaborating with surface forces towards the safety and security of Nigerian citizens. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

  • WED: Foundation condemns indiscriminate dredging in Lagos waterways

Mrs Titi Oshodi (M), the Special Adviser to Lagos State Governor on Climate Change and Circular Economy with Alhaji Abdul-Salam Ashade, the Chief Executive Officer, Green Janitors Sustainable Initiative, an NGO, with other members of the NGO on Sunday

    Dredging
    By Raji Rasak
Badagry (Lagos State), June 9, 2024 (NAN) The Green Janitors Sustainable Initiative on Sunday condemned the indiscriminate dredging of waterways and encroachment of wet lands in Lagos communities.
Alhaji Abdul-Salam Ashade, the Chief Executive Officer of the initiative, expressed his displeasure during  an event to celebrate 2024 World Environment Day in Badagry.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the theme of 2024 World Environment Day is: “Our land our Future. Land Restoration, Drought Resilience and Desertification”.
Ashade said: “We want the people to stop the dredging of our waterways and also stop encroaching wet lands in Lagos community.
“The dredging is familiar with Badagry. Almost in all the communities, you see them dredging and bringing out water from the water.
“We have so many wet lands in Lagos, most of these lands have been encroached by the people who want to make money at all cost.
“All these are vital instruments to land restoration that we are talking about,” he said.
He said that all encroachment and dredging had resulted to flooding.
“This happens when they sell the wet land and fill it up with sand, chasing away the water because they want to build houses.
“Go to Gbaji in Badagry, you will see a lot of dredging going on.
“If this continues, if it rains, this results to flooding because there is no free flow of water,” he said.
Ashade said the theme of 2024 WED – “Our land, our future”  champions the 2030 Agenda to move the world on to a sustainable and resilient path and joining forces to protect people and planet.
“World Environment Day 2024 builds momentum for climate action by rallying support for vital ecosystems restoration work.
“It aims to support Sustainable Development Goal 15- Life on Land, by accelerating progress on global commitments, which include protecting 30 per cent of land and sea for nature and restoring 30 percent of the planet’s degraded ecosystems.
“Billions across the world are facing food insecurity, crippling droughts, and livelihoods are under threat.
“That is why on World Environment Day, we’re asking young and passionate volunteers to join the global movement to restore our lands, increase drought resilience and combat desertification.
“Restoration is the natural solution to help address the triple planetary crisis, deliver new jobs, lower poverty and build resilience to extreme weather.
” Land is life and we must protect it,” he said.
Mrs Titi Oshodi ,the Special Adviser to Lagos State Governor on Climate Change and Circular Economy,  urged youths in Badagry to rise with one voice and protect their land.
“You have been chosen to stand to represent the future.
“Badagry presents a lot of opportunities, not only from the coastal angle, but from the emerging economy and industries that are coming soon
“There are lots of infrastructures coming to Badagry from Lagos State Development Plan.
“The town is holding up potential especially for the young ones,” she said.
Oshodi said she was happy with what the initiative was doing in Badagry.
“We are happy with what Green Janitors is doing in developing a number of initiative.
“And partnering with Lagos State University students and other NGO with the space to raise awareness and sensitise the youth to be more responsible with waste management,” she said.
Also speaking, Mr Sunday Akpan, the Assistant Chief Marine Engineer, Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), representing Mr Oluwadamilola Emmanuel, the General Manager, urged youths to protect their waterways.
Akpan advised the youth to stop indiscriminate dropping of plastics and other wastes in waterways.
“We must learn to protect our environment.
“If life above water refuses to protect the life below the water, very soon, life above water will soon join the life below the water,” he said.
NAN reports that to mark the World Environment Day, many volunteers and NGOs engaged in cleaning  Badagry waterways by picking plastics and other dirty things . (NAN)

  • Committee urges NLC to consider realistic, sustainable minimum wage

    Wage

    By Philomina Attah

Abuja, June 9, 2024 (NAN) The Committee of Youths on Mobilisation and Sensitisation (CYMS), has called on the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), to align its minimum wage demand with governments’ ability to pay sustainably.

Its Director-General, Mr Obinna Nwaka, made the call during a thanksgiving service to mark the end of the 2024 Youths’ Week at the Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, Nyanya, Abuja on Sunday.

The theme of the thanksgiving service was, “Promotion of Peaceful Coexistence and Religious Co-creation in our Nation”.

Nwaka said that considering the current economic challenges in the country, “the federal and state governments may struggle to pay, if the amount is unrealistic.”

According to him, the N250,000 demand as minimum wage by the NLC for workers is not sustainable, considering the country’s current financial situation.

He pointed out that Nigeria is still recovering from the economic difficulties of the past administration and warned against making promises that could destabilise the nation.

He also argued that a substantial salary increase would be insufficient if critical infrastructure and public services remain inadequate.

He advised labour to also pay attention to addressing broader systemic issues rather than focusing solely on wage increase.

“We are in the same shoes. There are other areas; labour for example can advocate for good governance; it’s not just all about minimum wage,” he added.

He called on the NLC to channel their efforts towards advocating for improved healthcare and education services, including the provisions of critical infrastructure.

This, he believes, could have a more significant impact on the quality of life of the Nigerian workers.

“Even if they are paying you 500,000 Naira as a salary, it will not be enough, if a healthcare facility is not there; if infrastructure is not there; and if we cannot even send our children to a public school.

“The NLC should focus on motivating the government to invest in these essential sectors,” he said.

Earlier, the minister in charge, Rev. Samuel Labuja, said that the conversations, throughout the youths’ week, reflected the nation’s quest for unity and development.

Labuja advised the youths to maximise their potential and invest in self-reliance ventures, as against depending on white-collar jobs.

“The youths should understand that we can’t live together without peace, and the best we can do to make the nation move forward is to live in peace.

“Youths should learn not to depend on salary alone. They should make use of their God-given talent to earn more resources.

“Whatever you are doing, do it well to the glory of God to earn a living,” he said.

On his part, the Church’s Youths President, Mr Bobby Odia, described the week-long youths’ conference as impactful.

Odia particularly said that the youths, as leaders of tomorrow, have understood the need to contribute their resources towards the development of the country.

“We just celebrated the 2024 Youths’ Week with the theme, “Stand Firm and Take Charge”, and for us to be the future of tomorrow, we have to utilise our energy for the good of our nation,” he said. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

  • Expert highlights risks of buying lands without survey plans

    Survey

    By Olatunde Ajayi

Ibadan, June 9, 2024 (NAN) The Nigerian Institution of Surveyors (NIS), Oyo State Chapter, has cautioned Nigerians from buying lands without proper survey plans.

Its Chairman, Waheed Lamidi, issued the caution in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ibadan on Sunday.

Lamidi says a survey plan can prove that a seller has the right to sell and tells the buyer the government is aware of the existence of the land.

He, however, advised Nigerians to always patronise only registered surveyors to avoid rising cases of land scams in the country.

“There are so many ways people are duping members of the public on land matters. I want to advise our people to always consult a registered surveyor before they pay for any land.

“This will help them to ascertain the genuineness of the land they want to buy; it reveals whether the land is free from government acquisition and if the land has not been sold to somebody else.

“It is always advisable to involve professionals before paying for lands to forestall losing large amounts of money in the process of avoiding surveyors’ professional fees.

“If the seller cannot provide the survey plan, it may be because the land has never been surveyed or another person owns the land,” he said.

The chairman noted that registered surveyors could easily be identified by their unique registration numbers and addresses from NIS.

He urged prospective land buyers to make payments only when they had physically examined such lands.

According to him, this will allow the buyer to ascertain the topography of the land, the kind of neighbourhood, and the level of development on the land. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Climate Change: Group trains 250 youths on tree planting, adaptation strategies

    Training
    By Habibu Harisu
Sokoto, June 9, 2024 (NAN) An NGO, Building Blocks for Peace Foundation (BBFORPEACE), says it has trained 250 youths on tree planting, nursing and other climate change adaptation strategies in Illela Local Government Areas of Sokoto State.

The group’s Programme Officer and Project Team Lead, Mr Gideon Ihuarulam, said this on Sunday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Sokoto.

Ihuarulam said the organisation was implementing a project tagged
”Northwest Climate Peace Hubs”, a climate security approach to conflict prevention in border community.

He said that the project was working toward preventing conflicts and initiating peace building strategies on addressing impacts of climate change along with associated activities.

“Climate security project means to neutralise the conflict and insecurity stemming from environmental degradation, desert encroachment, degraded pastures and other impacts of climate change in Northwest Nigeria.

“The project was borne out of the recognition of the dynamic ways through which the impacts of climate change stimulate conflict and insecurity in the region.

”Illela in Sokoto State and Jibia in Katsina State are the focus areas of the project,” Ihuarulam said.

According to him, the project is  supported by the United Nations Development Programme Nigeria and the Norwegian Embassy in Abuja.

He further said that three key activities had been identified in the project, including capacity building training for youths on dialogue, mediation, reconciliation and climate action.

The other, he said, was to establish climate and conflict early warning and early response structures and supporting climate change activists to plant and nurture trees across the LGA.

Ihuarulam also said that the core objective of the project was to support high risk communities in the region working with youths and women to address climate induced conflicts and adapt to climate change.

In separate remarks, representatives of UNDP, Mansur Dambuwa and Serifu Lamidi, underscored the importance of the project and called for maximum community support.

They commended the NGO’s Executive Director, Mr Rafi’u Lawal, for his commitment toward ensuring the success of the project

Speaking on behalf of the benefiting community, the District Head of Illela, Alhaji Buhari Abdulrahman, lamented the adverse effects of climate change and the insecurity facing the north.

Abdulrahman thanked the organisation for coming up with the initiative and expressed his community’s readiness to support the project and ensure its sustainability. (NAN)

  • Residents raise concerns as beans price soars in Lagos

    Beans

Lagos, June 9, 2024 (NAN) Lagos residents are raising concerns about continued increase in the price of beans, their major source of protein.

They said that consistent rise in the price of beans since 2024 had become unbearable, urging governments to intervene.

The residents spoke in interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Lagos.

NAN reports that a 40kg bag of beans, which sold for N26,000 in January, now sells for N115,000, while a 100kg bag which sold for N55,000 at the beginning of the year, now sells for N230,000.

This made the staple food beyond the reach of many of the residents.

Mrs Uloma Chigozirim, a housewife and mother of four on Santos Estate, Akowonjo, expressed worry that children might be malnourished following the high increase in the price of beans.

“Beans used to be the cheapest food; now, we do not even understand what is going on.

“Every other week, the price keeps going up; even  traders cannot tell us the reason for the hike.

“Beans used to be the cheapest source of protein for the average resident, but the produce is now too expensive to afford.

“We really need government intervention, else a lot of us will be malnourished,” Chigozirim said.

Hinting on the possible reason for the hike in the price of the produce, Mr Uche Ikenga, a beans farmer at the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, noted that the produce was not an all-season crop.

“It has the time it is cultivated.

“The peak period for beans harvest is usually at the end of the year. Then we have enough supply for the growing demand of the produce.

“However,  harvest time is the time some cattle are foraging everywhere for food.

“Last year, a lot of farmers lost their harvest because their beans farms were consumed by the foraging cows.

“The produce is scarce and expensive this year because the harvest of last year was low,” Ikenga said.

A beans trader at the Dry Foodstuff Section of Ile-Epo Market, Agege, Mr Ahmed Yusuf, said that beans might not be unavailable in the coming months.

“We sold a small bucket of beans for N6,500 last two weeks but now the same quantity sells for N 8,000.

“The price just keeps soaring everyday, and we sell as we buy. We no longer keep because of the price unpredictability.

“We are not even sure if we will have beans to sell by this time next month because the produce is unavailable,” he said.

Yusuf told NAN that demand for beans had been high but farmers did not have enough because so many of them could not cultivate crops this year.

“There is nothing we can do about the price hike, it has gone beyond our control,” Yusuf said.

A seller of jewellery, Mrs Bunmi Arowolo, called for intervention of the federal and Lagos State governments in the situation.

“Early in May, I bought a paint (small) bucket of beans for N7 500 as against N3,000 previously.

“As common form of protein, I now manage the little quantity for my family.

“I want to appeal to the governments to tackle insecurity so that farmers can go to their farms again and make the produce available and affordable,” Arowolo said.

Emphasising the importance of beans in Nigerians’ diets, Ms Adaeze Oparaku, a nutritionist at the Lagos Teaching Hospital (LUTH), said: “The produce is an important source of protein, carbohydrates, dietary fibre for both adults and children.

“It contains micronutrients such as the Vitamin Bs, good source of minerals such as phosphorus, copper, manganese, iron.

“Beans should be a regular staple in children’s diet, if they like it.

“However,  given the  rise in the price of the produce, it can be substituted with other protein sources in children’s meals.”

Mrs Eugenia Uloma, a trader at the popular Kotangora Market in Abule-Egba area, said that beans had been a major part of the Nigerian diet and important to every Nigerian.

“The produce is so expensive, but we still buy the quantity we can afford because it is our major source of protein.

“Other protein sources are even more expensive.

“We do not need so much from the government, if it can address this growing food inflation, we will be grateful.

“Let us just have food to eat, that is what most of us are asking. We need to feed our families to live, especially the children,” Uloma said.

A vegetable farmer, Mrs Barinedum Legbara, called for adequate planning for increased local production of beans.

“We buy beans as a basic necessity in our diet. Government should do something about the beans issue.

“We need adequate planning for strategic cultivation of beans so as to avoid this scarcity and hike.

“We have everything in this country to feed ourselves. Farmers should be empowered to cultivate crops for food security.

“Nigeria is fertile, we just need to be more strategic in our crop cultivation to give us sizeable yields and good prices,” Legbara said. (NAN) www.nannews.ng
