HIV/AIDS: Association decries members’ stigmatisation, poor care in Edo

    Support

    By Joy Odigie

Benin, June 11, 2024 (NAN) The Network of People Living with HIV/AIDS in Nigeria (NEPWHAN), Edo chapter, have decried the rate of stigmatisation faced by persons living with the virus in the state.

Mr Christopher Osayande, Chairman of NEPWHAN, Edo chapter, said this during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Benin.

Osayande said stigmatisation remained a significant challenge for Persons Living With HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) in society, and Edo was no exception.

“Stigmatisation is still high and as a result, persons living with the virus are being denied meaningful employment.

“For those in business, once people know they have the virus they stop patronising their businesses,” he said.

He noted that PLWHA were also not receiving adequate support from the state government.

“We still get the Anti-Retroviral (ARV) drugs and other care-related commodities in the state, but we don’t receive other forms of support.

“This is a vulnerable group and the majority are poor, therefore, government should make provisions for skills acquisition for PLWHA to enable them fend for themselves,” he said.

He added that the usual location for care and ARV drugs collection was no longer in use, adding that the new place allocated for care was not in good shape.

“The place is not suitable because when it rains or the sun shines, clients suffer.

“Imagine going to a facility for treatment and ending up contracting another illness,” Osayande said.

According to him, there are still new cases of HIV in the state and the number of people needing care is increasing due to lack of food and transportation.

“As an association, we are trying to see that the viral load reduces, but because most PLWHA do not have means of livelihood, the viral load remains high,” Osayande said. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

  • 25 years of uninterrupted democracy: Stakeholders identify gains, challenges, proffer solutions

    Democracy
    By Our Reporters
Abeokuta, June 11, 2024 (NAN) Stakeholders in Ogun have expressed mixed reactions in their appraisal of Nigeria’s 25 years of uninterrupted democratic governance.

The respondents, in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday, identified the gains and challenges of the country’s democratic model and proffered solutions for improvement.

Mr Bolarinwa Odeyale, Chairman of Abeokuta branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), in his reaction, said the major thing to be celebrated was the fact that the democratic rule had remained unbroken since 1999.

“The major thing we can point out for now is just that the ‘military boys’ are not at the helm of affairs and we are running the entire thing by ourselves. But I tell you, we are running it at a loss,” he said.

On the gains of the democratic rule, Odeyale noted that there had been peaceful transition of power through electoral processes in spite of the social, ethnic and religious diversities of the country.

The NBA chairman, who acknowledged the various judicial reforms and constitutional amendments that had been made since 1999, noted that the measures had contributed to the growth of the judiciary in the country.

He, however, noted that a lot still needed to be done to address corruption in the judiciary so as to enhance its integrity and help to deliver dividends of democracy to Nigerians.

“We need to strengthen our rule of law through judicial autonomy to ensure fairness in appointment of judges and quick dispensation of justice, among others,” he said.

Also contributing, the Secretary-General of Ogun Muslim Council, Alhaji Kamaldeen Akintunde, said the fact that Nigeria had experienced 25 years of uninterrupted democratic governance was worth celebrating.

According to Akintunde, Nigeria’s democracy has grown from being “nascent” to “developing”.

He noted that Nigeria had, in the last 25 years of democratic governance, witnessed a turn-around in infrastructure in some critical sectors.

“For example, the light rail and road infrastructure in the transportation sector is there, while education has also been revamped and the country can now boast of more public and private primary, secondary and tertiary institutions.

“The health system has also improved, notwithstanding the brain drain syndrome or the greener pasture seekers.

“Regrettably however, there is nothing to write home about in the power sector and agriculture, while insecurity and corruption remain the bane of our development,” he said.

On ways of sustaining democracy and making it fruitful in Nigeria, Akintunde called for strengthening of rule of law and practice of internal democracy by political parties.

“Opposition parties must be allowed to operate, as they have the potentials to engender growth and development.

“Citizens must also be law-abiding and eschew practices capable of undermining the peace, unity and progress of the country.

“Above all, election winners must fulfill their campaign or electoral promises in order to build trust among the people,” he said.

To the Minority Leader of Ogun House of Assembly, Hon. Lukman Adeleye, Nigeria’s 25 years of democratic rule is, by no means, an achievement.

“That Nigeria has been able to nurture its democracy, transiting from one democratic regime peacefully to another within the period, is worth celebrating,” he said.

The lawmaker, however, noted that the expectations of Nigerians were higher than what they got as dividends from the democratic rule.

“We still have a lot to do in terms of provision of infrastructure. We have a lot to do to better the economy, while, in terms of ability to really cater for the citizens, our political leaders have not done well.

“Today, food inflation is almost getting to 40 per cent. Our per capital income is one of the lowest. We have not done well in terms of dividends of democracy,” he said.

Adeleye noted that it was important for government to invest heavily in human capital development, as, according to him, “the greatest asset of any nation remains the people.”

He also stressed the need for increased local production, stable power supply and improved infrastructure for sustenance of democratic rule in Nigeria.

“That is why I am saying that the political class must do more; we must tackle poverty, unemployment as well as the infrastructural deficit.

“The political class should have the will to do the right thing, fighting corruption, building very strong institutions and ensuring that elections are conducted in a way that will reflect the true wishes of the people,” he said.

In his own submission, the National Vice-President, Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR), Mr Yinka Folarin, said government’s inability to sustain good policies with the right drivers had hindered the progress of democratic system in the country.

Folarin explained that Nigerians had only enjoyed some constitutional freedom, with little participation in decision making process.

To enhance democratic practice in Nigeria, he said that people’s participation in governance must be prioritised while institutions must be built and strengthened.

“We must be patriotic and fight corruption holistically, if we are going to move forward,” he said.

Also, Dr Bayo Adeyemi, a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Political Science, Covenant University, Ota, noted that democracy in the last 25 years had delivered “marginal” dividends to Nigerians.

Adeyemi identified ICT, banking and manufacturing as some of the sectors which had experienced major transformation since Nigeria changed to democratic rule in 1999.

“Banking operations has moved from traditional practice where you have to go to the banking hall before carrying out any business transactions to a more advanced technology.

“The ICT industry has also been transformed to a more advanced digital technology while many industries had sprung up in the manufacturing sector,” he said.

The don, however, identified corruption as a major factor that had slowed down the progress of the country in spite of the transformation, adding that “the dividends are enjoyed by the select few.”

He called on governments at all levels to tackle corruption and embrace good governance in order to bring more dividends of democracy to the masses. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

  • Hajj: Senate conducts assessment of pilgrims’ lodging, feeding arrangement in Madinah

    Assessment

    By Salisu Sani-Idris

Madinah (Saudi Arabia), June 11, 2024 (NAN) The Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs on Tuesday conducted an on-the-spot assessment of the Nigerian pilgrims’ lodging and feeding arrangements in Madinah, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the committee led by the Senate Chief Whip, Sen. Ali Ndume (APC-Borno South) visited many pilgrims’ abodes to see how they were being served food.

Briefing newsmen after the assessment tour, Ndume said the Senate decided to conduct the exercise out of concern over the alleged poor feeding of Nigerian pilgrims in the holy city.

According to him, social media has been awash with fake pictures of poor meals being served to Nigerian pilgrims in Saudi.

“And the Senate as an institution is concerned about the welfare and well-being of citizens decided to come and investigate the matter to ascertain the truth or falsity of the situation.”

Sen. Senator Sharafadeen Alli (APC-Oyo South) advised Nigerian pilgrims to be well-guided, follow instructions, and ensure they worshipped Allah wholeheartedly during the pilgrimage.

Alli also advised the pilgrims not to be distracted by earthly things during the pilgrimage.

“We thought that since we are here, it would be nice to visit the pilgrims.

“Secondly, there were rumours before we left home (Nigeria) about the situation of the pilgrims here.

“So, it is right that we are here; it is better to come out and conduct an on-the-spot assessment of the situation. What we have seen so far is contrary to the things trumped up at home.

“About the welfare of the pilgrims: I think the pilgrims are well-taken care of, and as far as their feeding is concerned we have seen the food, it is basic and not below any standard.

“Then on the issue of the woman (a pilgrim from Kwara State) who was rumored to have committed suicide, I would say that from the video footage and information that we have here, it’s clear that she fell off the top of a building; it wasn’t a matter of suicide.

“It was an unfortunate incident and whatever Allah wills there is nothing a human being can do”

This is coming after the media in Nigeria reported at the weekend that a Nigerian pilgrim from the Kwara State contingent, Hajia Hawawu Mohammed, committed suicide having jumped from her rooftop in Madinah.

The sad incident was confirmed by the Executive Secretary of the Kwara State Pilgrims Welfare Board, Abdulsalam Abdulkadir, on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Prof. Abubakar Yagawal, the Commissioner, Planning, Research, Statistics, Information, and Library Services, at the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), said the commission’s team is working tirelessly to meet the needs of the pilgrims.

“We thank Allah that the team of Senators came here and witnessed what is happening and they are satisfied with whatever it has seen here.

“Of course, some rumours that they heard were against Nigerian pilgrims but to God be the glory they have seen it and they have cleared everything.” (NAN)

German president welcomes Zelensky to Berlin

    Zelensky

Berlin, June 11, 2024 (dpa/NAN) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was welcomed in Berlin by German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier on Tuesday, ahead of an international conference on recovery and reconstruction of Ukraine.

Steinmeier received Zelensky at his official residence, the Bellevue Palace in the capital.

He planned to accompany Zelensky to the official opening of the conference and attend Zelensky’s speech to the German parliament on Tuesday afternoon.

Relations between the two presidents were initially strained, after Zelensky told Steinmeier in April 2022.

He was not welcome to join colleagues from Poland and the Baltic states for a planned trip to Kiev.

At the time, Zelensky accused Steinmeier of taking a soft stance toward Russian President Vladimir Putin in his previous political positions.

The two have seemingly patched up relations since, however, and Steinmeier later visited Ukraine. (dpa/NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

  • Amnesty International is not against government – Official

Participants of the human rights clinic by Amnesty International in UniCal

    Government
    By Christian Njoku
Calabar, June 11, 2024 (NAN) Mr Gabriel Aniabi, Cross River Coordinator, Amnesty International, Nigeria says the organisation is independent of any government, political ideaology and economic interests.
Aniabi who spoke during the inauguration of a Human Rights Clinic in the University of Calabar (UniCal) said the organisation is not anti government nor being sponsored by any.
The coordinator said Amnesty International is for everyone and had at some point,  saved some great Nigerians such as former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Fela Ransome- Kuti, and Agba Jalingo among others.
He said Amnesty International became handy when people needed somebody to speak for them in protection of their rights when they were being violated.
According to him, ”we have  to beam our searchlights on Nigerian Universities after the disturbing trend of sex for grades was exposed by a British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) reporter few years ago.”
“This spurred Amnesty International to take this fight against human rights to the universities to enable the students know what their rights are, how to stand up for their rights and channels they can pass through to access justice,” he said.
On her part, Prof. Florence Obi, Vice Chancellor of UniCal said she was very pleased with the human rights training of the students in the institution.
Represented by Prof. Anthony Eyang, Dean of Student Affairs, Obi said she is a strong promoter of justice and human rights
She noted that  training of the students was in tandem with the environment she was working hard to establish in UniCal.
“With over 40,000 students and 7,000 staff, there will be issues among people, so, I hope that those of the students that have been trained by Amnesty International in this clinic will shine their  light on campus in promoting human rights and justice,” she said.
Similarly, Miss Nwaobi Obioma, President of Amnesty International, Human Rights Clinic in UniCal said as a group in the institution, they wanted to ensure that whenever they heard  complaints of human rights abuses it was promptly investigated.
Obioma said with their link with Amnesty Nigeria and Amnesty International, they wanted to ensure that justice was effectively served, adding that, they hoped to reduce human rights violations in the institution to the bearest minimum.
“We will carryout lots of campaigns,  advocacies and debates  to sensitise people on the issues of human rights abuses.
“We will also ensure that sexual abuses,  discrimination from associations and segregation are parts of issues we will look into,” she said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the theme of the clinic is entitled:  “Empowering Students: Understanding and Asserting Your Human Rights on Campus.” (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
