  • Tinubu emphasises inclusivity, accountability, transparency

    Democracy

    By Salif Atojoko

Abuja, June 11, 2024 (NAN) President Bola Tinubu has implored Nigerian leaders to recommit to the values of inclusivity, accountability and transparency in the bid to guarantee a democracy that would flourish and endure.

He said that after 25 years of uninterrupted democracy, “it is time for all Nigerians to partake in building a nation where every voice is heard, where every potential is realised, and where every citizen is empowered to contribute to the collective good”.

The President, who spoke on Tuesday during the 2024 Democracy Day Lecture in Abuja, said that  in the nation’s democratic journey, every Nigerian, irrespective of background, must be given a chance to contribute to the nation’s shared destiny.

Tinubu, who was represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, said that the lessons learnt after 25 years is that democracy is a journey that must be constantly nurtured and watched closely.

“Our progress has been marked by both triumphs and trials, each serving as a reminder of the preciousness of our democratic principles.

“As we move forward, let us recommit to the values of inclusivity, accountability, and transparency, ensuring that our democracy not only endures, but flourishes for generations to come.

“The future of Nigeria lies in our hands, in our ability to dream, innovate and act with courage and conviction,” he said.

He urged Nigerians to embrace the moment with a renewed sense of purpose, “knowing that the path we tread today will shape the Nigeria of tomorrow.

“This is an invitation for each of us to participate in building a nation where every voice is heard, where every potential is realised, and where every citizen is empowered to contribute to the collective good.”

Former President, Dr Goodluck Jonathan, who was Chairman of the 2024 Democracy Day Lecture, said Nigeria had made some progress in democratic governance despite the challenges in its journey of nationhood.

“Notably, the path towards democratic consolidation has been a difficult one. The First, Second and Third Republics of our democratic experiment were abruptly ended by the military, amid political crises and social tensions.”

Jonathan said the return of democracy in 1999, after many years of military reign, “signaled a new phase in our national journey and our shared vision of unity, peace and progress.

“In the last 25 years, we have made modest progress in this regard in spite of some challenges.

“As a nation, we built an economy that was once the biggest in the African continent, experienced significant infrastructural growth, made strides in the arts and sports, and recorded many peaceful political transitions at the national and sub-national levels.”

He said in 25 years, the country had witnessed four power transitions from one president to another, including the death of a siting president.

“We have seen the gradual strengthening of our democratic institutions, the expansion of civil liberties, and the active participation of our citizenry in the political process.

“This progress, while commendable, also reminds us that our work is far from done. It is, therefore, time to make this journey seamless, through good citizenship, patriotic service as well as sacrificial and exemplary stewardship,” Jonathan said.

He said that for democracy to yield its desired dividends, the political class and elite must lead by example and work with unity of purpose to guarantee peace and social justice to the citizens.

“As we project towards celebrating the golden jubilee of our uninterrupted democracy, it is imperative to state that we need to work assiduously towards further strengthening state institutions so that they can withstand the shocks that threaten democratic governance.

“To attain such a feat, the political actors and everyone at the helm of affairs in this country must listen to the voices of the citizens. The lifestyle of the political class should reflect the current realities in our land,” said the former President.

Co-chair of the lecture, Amb. Babagana Kingibe, said Nigeria had enjoyed political stability and continuity in governance in the last 25 years.

“During this period of uninterrupted democracy, fundamental freedom has been enhanced and generally protected.

“Personal freedoms and expressed beliefs and opinions, freedom of association, freedom of the press, civil society activists, including trade union activists have all relatively thrived.

“Similarly, advanced culture of the rule of law and strengthening of democratic institutions such as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the judiciary and the police are all work in progress.

“Efforts have continued to be made in the area of accountability through such mechanisms as parliamentary oversight and the efforts of anti-corruption and similar agencies.

He urged the government to build and sustain democracy which, he said, was a lifelong endeavour in any nation.

“Even older democracies as shown by the  just concluded parliamentary elections in Europe, just like in the U.S., which has been practicing democracy in the last 250 years, still grapple with the challenges of perfecting their democracies,” he said.

Also, Alhaji Aminu Masari, former Speaker, Federal House of Representatives and former Governor of Katsina State, said Nigeria’s democracy was maturing and standing firm after 25 years.

Masari said this in his keynote address at the Democracy Day lecture.

“We have had two presidents who served for eight years and transferred power to their successors. Our democracy can then be said to be maturing and has stood firm,” said Masari.

He said that many Nigerians feared that the Fourth Republic might suffer the same fate as the First, Second and Third Republics which were truncated by the military.

“In 1989, some Nigerians expressed doubts saying that the military might soon take over. They were risk averse, relying heavily on our past records,” he said.

However, he said the Fourth Republic had witnessed several circles of successful elections and transition of power three times.

“An occasion like this gives us the opportunity to look back and to look forward,” said Masari.

Earlier, Sen. George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, had said that the lecture provided the nation the opportunity to salute the courage and commitment of Nigerians for remaining steadfast.

“Nigerians should also be saluted for believing in the values of democracy in spite of numerous challenges facing the nation.

“Most significantly, this celebration provides the window of opportunity for President Bola Tinubu to reiterate his unwavering commitment to democracy, rule of law and good governance.

“He has demonstrated this commitment by approving the 2024 Democracy Day programme. Our democratic journey is one of optimism as reversal is never contemplated,” he said.

He added that the choice of the theme for the 2024 Democracy Day Lecture, “25 Years of Enduring Democracy: Prospects for the Future,” underscored the importance of democracy and the role it played in engendering sustainable socio-economic development for the good of the people. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Ilorin, June 11, 2024 (NAN) Gov. AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara on Tuesday in Ilorin advised tertiary institutions’ students who indulge in cultism, drug abuse and other related social vices to retrace their steps .
The governor gave the advice at a stakeholders’ dialogue which had the theme “Stemming the Tide of Social Vices among Students: A Panacea for Positive Growth”
He warned that students’ continued involvement in such acts would lead them to an uncertain future, regret and premature death.
AbdulRazaq, who was represented at the dialogue by the state’s Commissioner for Education, Dr Mary Arinde, urged those involved in the acts to muster the courage to retrace their steps.
“This will allow the huge investment their parents made on them not to be in vain,” he said at the event, which was organised by the Office of the Special Assistant to the Governor on Student Affairs, Mr Salami Wasiu.
While speaking further, the governor said the conversation was not about name-calling or shaming of anyone who may be involved in any of these social activities.
“It is about giving you fresh perspectives and opening your eyes to the dangers associated with these activities, and asking you to make good choices that will give you a head start and make you a valuable member of our community.
“Cultism, cyber crime, drug abuse and sexual abuse, among others, set you up for an uncertain future of regrets, stigmatisation, premature death and inability to attain your dreams.
“I am pleading that you do not engage in any of it for the sake of your future. Your parents have made huge investments to make you a successful person.
“The way to pay your parents back is to shun any activity, association and affiliation that will make them cry.
“You mean a lot to us. The future of this country is tied to how you all turn out to be. It is not too late to make the right choice. Please do not let us down”, he said
On his part, an official of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Alhaji Bashir Muhammad, said the agency was currently prosecuting no fewer than 15 drug barons across the country.

  • Tinubu inherited 2,600 road projects worth N15trn – Umahi

Minister of Works,David Umahi, during the meeting.
    Projects
    By Angela Atabo
Abuja, June 11, 2024 (NAN) The Minister of Works, David Umahi on Tuesday said President Bola Tinubu’s administration inherited 2,600 road projects nationwide worth N15 trillion.
Umahi made this known in Abuja, at a meeting with contractors to address “some salient issues on the state of road contracts and funding”.
‘`When we came on board, Mr President, inherited a total of 2,600 projects totaling over 15 trillion.
“At that time the projects were ongoing, only about N2 trillion or thereabout were certified and paid.
“Now, we have ongoing projects of over N13 trillion.
“Some of them are under SUKUK, some budgetary provisions over a number of years, some being funded by NNPC tax credit while some with private sector  tax credit,  among others.
“Unfortunately, we were confronted with inflation after the fuel subsidy was removed and then the challenges of the Naira came.
All of these made it mandatory that all projects must be looked into,” he said.
Umahi said some of the projects had lasted for 11 months and some over 18 months and above, which made inflation to affect their  delivery
He  noted that after a realistic look into the projects, the ministry realised the need to review most of the projects because of the conditions on ground.
The Minister disclosed that the ministry  had appealed to the President to capture the projects in the 2024 budgetary provision, and he obliged the request.
The Minister however, observed that the ongoing projects had very poor budgetary allocation ranging from  N50 million to N100million.
“We also have some new projects; the constituency projects of members of National Assembly constitute over 90 per cent of the new projects.
“These constituency projects are also of very  poor budgetary allocation  of about N100 million to  N200 million.’’
Umahi further disclosed that the ministry had about 30 projects in its  2024 budget, with N2 billion allocation .
He reiterated the commitment of the ministry to  innovating ways to deliver on its mandates.
“In Spite of the challenges, we have really achieved a lot in this ministry. We have 330 projects that Mr. President approved on emergency basis totaling over N260 billion in cost.
“As of today, we have completed over 80 per cent of such projects.
“So, if we were to ask Mr. President to come over to commission them, there will be no time for him to do other things.
“I think that a cumulative project of over N260 billion is quite a milestone achievement for this ministry and for Mr President” he said.
Umahi, therefore, directed the  Permanent Secretary to instruct all Regional Directors  of the ministry, to carry out the inauguration of the projects nationwide, so that Nigerians would see what they were doing.
The Minister also disclosed that from July, the ministry would be  inviting the president, monthly, to commission mega projects across the six geopolitical zones .(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

According to Akerele, Nigeria’s cultural wealth is a testament to the resilience, creativity, and ingenuity of its people.

“We must recognise and celebrate our differences, rather than allowing them to divide us,” she said.

  • Court reserves judgment on Edo LP candidacy tussle until July 19

    Candidacy

    By Imelda Osayande

Benin, June 11, 2024 (NAN) Justice Babatunde Quadri of the Federal High Court in Benin has reserved judgment on the candidacy legal tussle arising from the Labour Party (LP) governorship primaries until July 19.

Mr Kenneth Imansuangbon had approached the Federal High Courts in Benin and Abuja, challenging the nomination of Olumide Akpata as the party’s candidate for the Sept. 21 governorship election.

Imansuangbon’s challenge is on the grounds of LP not following the electoral guidelines in the primaries and Akpata not filling and signing the indemnity form among other grounds.

After two adjournments, the case eventually came up for hearing on Tuesday with counsel to the parties adopting their written addresses.

Imansuangbon’s lead counsel, A.A. Malik (SAN), alleged that the first defendant (Akpata) violated critical elements of the electoral processes and party constitution.

Malik pointed out that his client had disclosed reasonable cause of action on the matter and urged the court to throw away the submission of the first defendant.

He also prayed the court to declare and return the plaintiff as the winner, or, on the alternative, void and nullify the primary election, ordering a fresh election.

He alleged that the conduct of the LP primaries was marred with overvoting, which ran contrary to the party guidelines and the constitution.

Meanwhile, the defence counsel, Kadiri Asamah (SAN), who doubles as Akpata’s running mate, described the plaintiff’s submission as baseless; one that couldn’t be litigated by the court.

He added that it was a pre-primary issue and as such be dismissed by the court.

Asamah, while adopting all the arguments contained in his written addresses, urged the court to dismiss the written addresses of the plaintiff as an abuse of court processes.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the LP primaries were conducted on Feb. 23. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
